  1. If the port has come under attack and sustained damage, you cannot transport out of it until it is back up to strength.
  2. Yes, good movies all. But have any of you guys ever seen "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp"? Don't let the title fool you. This was one of those "we feel good about ourselves" movies the Brits put out right after WWII. It was about an old-school British General from the Boer War who found himself having to change his gentlemanly way of fighting a war in the face of the Nazi threat. VERY good movie. Always got 4-5 star ratings on the web sites. Just MY $0.02
  3. If you two play, you HAVE to keep track of the progress and entertain the rest of us with screen shots and reports.
  4. oh, hell, let him go sulk. if he really believes in his opinions and is of a strong character, he'll be back. if not, we'll all forget about him by next monday. that is life.
  5. I also enjoy reading this. Especially the first installments where the war's outcome was still in doubt. But, forgive me if I seem petty, but we know who is going to win now. Just like any other Human vs. AI game.
  6. Hi all. This post is for those few of us who for some unknown reason try to play High Command once in a while. Hey, it reminds us how great Hubert's game is! To get High Command to work in WinXP, you have to do the following: Go to the Windows directory. Right-click and edit the memory tab of the _default (default MS DOS icon) icon and change to allow max memory. That should allow one to play High Command in the default Command Prompt window. Hope that helps
  7. No, No, Zeres. I meant those guys who NEVER grow up properly. Maybe you have never attended GENCON in Milwaukee. If so, you know of whom I speak. No offense of course. I have two boxed sets of Axis and Allies in the closet.
  8. Hmmm, never thought I was all that well-thought-out A&A Iron Blitz is/was a joke. Sort of like sitting down to an old-fsahoined board game of Axis and Allies and having the long-haired kid/smelly D&D wanna-be guy tell you he likes to play "house rules" You know... alternate starting points, paratroops, etc. All 'cause he can't win by the written rules against another human being. I'll tell you guys what i think (if I may). It all comes down to single player replayability these days. If Hubert's AI wasn't able to give the decent game it does, this game would go the way of HICOM and all the rest. Now, HICOM against another human WAS fun, but took about a week to play all the way through via hotseat play.
  9. I suppose you are right. We "wargamers" are probably too honest a lot for that to happen. As to your original question, I suppose Hubert has been asked this so many times in the past (check out all the achived pages in this forum) that he doesn't even answer it any more.
  10. Sure, it's all fun and games until someone posts the download of a complete SC from Battlefront on Kazaa or some other file-sharing program. Then Hubert et. all go belly up and we wait another 5 years for more decent games. Think, gentlemen.
  11. HICOM you should change your name. You know that is one of the old and revered games we talk about quite a bit. You are a bit presumptuous in taking it for your own. I think the guys will agree with me. As to your opines... I agree with the thumb map needing to display control zones at a glance. As to having the choice of France, etc., being Axis OR Allied powers. Well, I think Hubert wanted to make WWII flexible but he is not really creating "Alternate Universes" here. That is what other games do.
  12. mine took a week, but i was well worth the wait. maybei am not the expert wargamer i thought i was. i underestimated the allied AI from the get-go.
  13. Ya know, COmmand HQ was fun back when I had a 286 PC. Actually, that PC is in the basement somewhere. The old V for Victory series (America invades, etc.) were VERY good grand strategy games. So were the Gary Grigsby games (forget the names now). Any of you wargamers would be well advised to keep at least one comp (come on, we all have at LEAST two or three to our names by now) around to play old DOS games. YOU KNOW, boot into DOS 6.1 and all
  14. Actually, I have a good working set of High Command disks. It is a DOS game, but I can run it just fine in WinXP. As to how it stacks up to SC... Well, the scale is smaller, and there are more and varied units. I think that is why the AI stunk so badly. The AI in SC can handle what is offered it better. Against another human player, I think High Command compares well with SC. No offense of course! I own both. And we are talking about being able to reconstitute units by combining corps and armies in High Command. Wish we had that in SC. Comments guys?
  15. Hey, do any of you guys remember that old favorite High Command? I remember spending hours and days trying all variants against the crappy AI opponents. I never lost the lust for the hex counters. thanks to Hubert for coding this one! Anyone else have fond memories of that game? [ October 07, 2002, 10:18 PM: Message edited by: mwenek ]
