  1. I'm sure everybody will point their fingers and yell "herasy" for making such a mild suggestion in a sea of drastic ideas, but hear me out... The idea is to limit the ability of a nation to rapidly reach a high tech level with a certain technology, right? So why not limit the amount of research points they can add each turn? By forcing a nation to only increase their assigned research in any given field by 1 per turn it will take 5 turns to reach maximum research. This way players have to plan in advance and their returns to their investments will, at the least, be slowed. You can also look at this as the building of a research project in the area (ie. start the project, increase funds, so-on and so-forth). So bring on the criticism, I can't wait
  2. I have a ladder running right now, although I'm guessing nobody is playing games for it. The link is on my sig and all you have to do is go to the site, sign up, and start playing games. The only thing you gotta do is report losses after games. We can iron out rules if things get going and if it becomes popular enough the site I'm using to host the ladder is set up for tournaments, as well.
  3. You've made some good points. However, in response to your wish to remove rockets from the game. I say poppy-cock! Those babies are very lethal at lvl 4 and 5. An axis campaign (39 Expert+0) focused on testing the use of rockets proved to be most amusing. I almost felt that developing them to their full potential was a gamey strategy it worked so well. You should try it sometime. If you intend to have them removed from the game for play-balance reasons, this I may agree with. At least tweak their power. Expensive, yes; but by no means are they silly little things. If you don't believe me just try it for yourselves.
  4. It is certainly possible to defend france. In fact, I succesfully held all of France. The only city I lost during the game (39' campaign Expert+0) was brussels. The allies won the war in early 43 with france the owner of Germany and Italy, in fact. The key is to move fast to set up a stable front and get yourself a HQ. If you manage that, all that is needed is a war of attrition. Not being afraid to put your neck on the line to destroy weakened German armor and army units is a must. Kinda surprising in my eyes. Who would have thought the froggies were capable of such things?
  5. It sounds like you're eating up your MPP's to fix/build those high tech weapons while the russian just keeps filling in the real-estate with warm bodies. You should try to up your industrial tech level so you can buy more units. That way you'll be able to exploit those gaps you create and maybe break through the lines. Also, consider making an amphibious assault around one of his flanks to cut some supply lines and try to quickly break through somewhere else. Hope some of that helps
  6. I don't want to give much away (keeping in the months of suspense we've all endured), but the manual was good (gave out some nice information). The AI surprised me a couple of times, but on the whole expect to look for a human player for a good challenge. And let me tell you something else... This is definitly going to be one of those games you keep pulling off the shelf for years to come when you just want to have a fun game to play for a day or two. Great job Hubert!
  7. Let's not get silly now. I'm talkin about victory scores here. I got 256 with the Axis. Started in Poland and never looked back. It's amazing how much fun level 5 rockets, jet aircraft, tanks, and industrial tech is. Kinda makes the enemy want to run and hide. Sheff p.s.- I basically have been playing for the past 8 hours, this could be bad news...
  8. I know somebody has asked a rather general question about the editor; my question is specific. I was wondering if it is possible to import a saved game to the editor. This seems like it would open up a lot of possibilities for creating interesting campaigns or creating your own "what-if" scenarios from your own games. I don't know if that is supported (my guess is no) but, in my opinion, it would be rather fun.
  9. Personally, I'd have to agree with blackbellamy on this one. In a 50 mile area there could definitely have been the entire german navy and probably most of the british navy (although I'm pretty sure they would run into each other). For the purposes of the game, it seems that not having stacking is the better way to go. It helps play balance. Consider having stacking and a player would consolidate all their ships into a very small area. In responce the other player would eventually do the same and it would just be a big shootout every game. Not much for tactics/strategy there, right?
  10. quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The A.I. also liked to go the hard way. It decided to go across wet, hilly fields, and even up steep slopes scattered with trees instead of sticking mainly to the roads, which would have gotten them to the town MUCH faster. I think out of 30+ vehicles the A.I. had, I only saw 2 ever use a road, and then not for long. Keep in mind that most of the roads were concrete and therefore un-mineable (except for daisy-chains), so the A.I. should have used them more. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Actually, this is an issue that infringes on path-finding, which is another algorithm issue all together. Pathfinding, like AI development, has it's own development. Programmers can, depending on the project, spend a lot of time developing a new algorithm; some time tweaking an existing algorithm; or simply transplant one that has already been developed somewhere else. They can require a wealth of mathematical knowledge and insight and can be VERY time-consuming. I'm not trying to cut anybody down, but hopefully to increase the appreciation that all of you already have for all the hard work these guys do to bring you good games to play and how gifted they are (even if you believe their AI to be "okay").
  11. Make sure you set the initial setting as well, and try to click off the "protected" checkbox that should be under it's pull-down list. You don't need to use all the maximum value either, these games don't require much memory. Good luck, I hope this will work!
  12. They are actual numbers of memory. There is a pull-down menu with choices for the ammount you want, or you can select automatic(but it's better to just pick one of the settings yourself, I think).
  13. It's a memory issue. Older games use types of memory that newer pc operating systems don't use anymore. But you can simulate it really easily. Just go to the file that starts the game(probably either a .exe or .bat) and right click it and select properties(down at the bottom of the window that pops up). There will be a tab called "memory" at the top of the properties window, click it. There should be a list of a few different kinds of memory on this window. The extended and ems(i think those are the names, i don't recall) sections are probably set to zero or something like that. Change these values to allocate some of this old style memory to the program(how much depends on the game just play around until it works ). And everything should work fine after that!
  14. Thanks SuperTed. I was hoping that everybody would be able to come to some consesus on the most agreed upon rules so we could all follow them on the ladder. I'm guessing that make take some trial and error though. Thanks to all who join and I hope many more are to follow!
  15. To be honest, I didn't know there would be an official ladder.
  16. I've been watching the forums for a long time now and waiting eagerly for SC to come out and now I'm throwin down my two cents. I hope you guys are interested in having a SC ladder because I've got one all set up for everybody. If you're interested you can go and join it now. Just something more to get everybody in the mood to see the world GOLD appear in a message from Hubert. The link to the site should be at the end of this post, but if it isn't this is it: http://www.myleague.com/stratcom Tell me what you all think!
