  1. This is a great book. What are some good books that cover the whole North African campaign?
  2. This is the one in daylight when Jerry attacks the Aussies on Trig 29. Has anybody won with the attacking Jerries? It seems unwinnable against the defending AI when one attacks as the Jerries. Thoughts?
  3. Please tell me that there is a website that discusses this stuff! I haven't felt so clueless about a military history topic since I first became interested in this stuff back in 1973.
  4. Thanks a million! I've learned much today. I fully understand why I've been confused for so long . . . this business can be very confusing! In any event, I am much more informed now than I was yesterday. Thanks so much. Anybody else got some good examples of UK unit designations?
  5. THANK YOU! I've been ignorant for years, now you've cured me with regard to the Australians! Please, somebody cure me with regard to the other UK forces. Or perhaps does the thread already contain all that there is to know? In which case, I'll have to accept that one cannot tell simply from the x/y designation, all that there is to know about the designated unit.
  6. I suggest you reread this thread in its entirety, as at least two posters have already indicated that this is not correct. </font>
  7. Cuff titles on his trouser legs and barefoot? No wonder why he was banished to the North African theater. He must be trying for a "Section Eight" style of discharge. He's got guts, though! I'll give him that.
  8. No, you're not UberGrogged. You're both UberGrogging together. Michael is right about cavalry regiment amalgamations viz the 17/21st Lancers with their natty 'Death or Glory' Cap Badge. The 17/21st was of course a single regiment of armour (subsequently amalgamated again out of existence). Or a tank battalion in more prosaic Continental (pick either) terms. A single unit. There is thus no 16/21st etc. And you are of course also right to say that the number in front of the slash designates the battalion number of a regiment of infantry. Thus the 2/Hampshires would be the 2nd Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment. I would not go quite as far to say that a regiment is merely 'administrative'. It is of course just that in combat terms but it is also one's family. Life becomes slightly more complicated when you are dealing with infantry regiments that, post-Cardwell reforms, are still known by numbers (which is uncommon). John Masters' old mob the 2/4th Prince of Wales's Own Gurkha Rifles being a case in point. They were thus the 2nd Battalion of that Regiment implying that there could be other battalions of that Regiment in existence rather than merely being an amalgamation of the 2nd and 4th PWOGRs. D'you see? The US is of course familiar with this with, for instance, the famous example of the 3/75 Rangers being the 3rd Battalion of the 75th Rangers Regiment. Phew. </font>
  9. Folks, the UK unit designations still confuse me sometimes. I'm talking about the ones that use the slash between two numbers, i.e. 7/7. Could somebody clarify how to read these? I know that the UK forces used battalions, brigades, regiments and divisions. However, I often can't figure out what which number in the x/y designation refers to a battalion, regiment, brigade or division. Thanks for the help.
  10. Got it! Thanks. Why must one disable popup blocker and anti virus to be able to log in? [ December 14, 2003, 12:02 AM: Message edited by: Jean Lafitte ]
  11. I'm in the same boat as you, since we have the same books on the topic. IP has detailed OB for a number of PDs, but not the 18th PD. I hope somebody can bail us out.
  12. Thanks so much for clearing it up. I'm an old Advanced Squad Leader player from the day it came out. I gave it up for CMBO/CMBB. Your research is better than mine, because I relied on Avalon Hill's research into these issues. I got the impression from my ASL days that some 50mm lang guns were available to be fitted on Pz IIIs during the summer of 1941. We seem to be fairly certain that this information is wrong, and that the first Pz IIIs were either made or refitted with the 50mm lang gun perhaps as early as November, 1941. Thanks, guys. I don't post much, but I read all the posts and I really appreciate the opportunity to benefit from your expertise.
  13. Ahhh! That is very interesting! I did not know that all 50mm lang guns came via reinforcement. I've been interested in this detail for many years. How certain can we be that all 50mm guns on the tanks that rolled on 22 Jun 41 were kurz and that the 50mm lang guns went to the front via reinforcement and/or refit of existing 50mm kurz models? I'm keenly awaiting your message, because I've wondered about this for years. Thanks. [ October 09, 2003, 12:10 AM: Message edited by: Jean Lafitte ]
  14. I was 15 years old in 1975, and that's when I started seriously reading about WWII. Of course, I had toy soldiers as a child, as did most of you. It's great that these two CM games have actually brought some new people into the hobby of reading about WWII. Military history is a great hobby.
  15. I also enjoy studying Napoleonic warfare. I love the way that the three combat arms were so perfectly balanced during that period: infantry, cavalry and artillery interfaced like a game of Scissors, Paper and Stone.
  16. Do any of the sources tell whether the Pz IIIs with 50mm guns are the long or short version of the 50mm gun for each of the divisions?
  17. I've been studying WWII/Eastern front history since 1975. How about you guys?
  18. I'd like to read up on the types of tanks possessed by the German Pz Divs on 22 Jun 41. Is there a website that tells us which Pz Divs had Pz 38s? Pz 35s? Types of Pz IIIs, long or short 50mm gun? Thanks.
  19. How does the WWI scenario designer deal with the fact that infantry tactical doctrine in WWI was very different from infantry tactical doctrine in WWII?
  20. Problem with Bad Break. Tried it twice as German. The game ended with a German total victory after about four turns even though not one Soviet tank had been hit. Suggestions as to what is wrong?
  21. SP 1 scenarios 1, 2 and 5 are unzipped into the correct "Scenarios" folder in my CMBB folder, but these scenarios don't show up when I start CMBB and look at the menu of Battles. Can anybody suggest a fix? Thanks.
  22. I just looked in my copy of Glantz's "The Initial Period of War on the Eastern Front" and found an AAR from two officers of the 7th Pz Div concerning the "Breakout from Borisov" in July, 1941. 7th PD, as you know, was von Luck's unit in 1941. Pz Rgt 25, as far as I can tell from portions of the book, used Pzkw IV, Pzkw 38(t), and Pzkw II. I don't know whether they had any Pzkw III types. 7 PD attacked north of Minsk. The book also has detailed info about 3 PD and 4 PDs attacks across the Beresina River in July, 1941. 3 PD seems to have been better equipped than 7 or 4 PD, because we find more halftracks and Pz III types in 3PD. No much info on the opposing Soviet forces, other than they were dug in and provided stout resistance. This book is the best I have ever seen on East Front war in 1941. What else can I help you with?
