  1. While I prefer anything to the infamous "chirp, chirp" of the previous CMs, I'm not sure if dogs or chickens would be any better for the Italian campaigns. Most of my in-laws who lived in Italy during the war concede that the last thing you'd hear in any Italian town was a dog because it was already being served on a dining room platter. As for any farm animals, almost all were seized by the German army almost immediately making food shortages a common occurence on the boot. Go with the flies. jim. 2. I starting playing the CM games a long time ago - over the years it became quite apparent the time, research and passion it took to create these games. I logged onto the internet newsgroups tonight and I checked out [deleted] - every once in a while I find something I used to have on 3.5 inch of 5 1/4 inch floppy disk that I can't find any more (really, honestly). To my surprise, someone posted CMBB on the board. WHY? This game has a pretty mature audience and I'm pretty sure this audience understands the same thing I do - the guys at Battlefront don't work for a charity - and this game has limited circulation - they need all the cash they can get to keep food on the table so they can develop NEW and BETTER versions of the game. So if the person who's posting the CMBB rip on the newgroups is reading this post, stop it - you're not doing anyone any favours around here and you definitely don't deserve to own or play the game. jim. 3. Why hasn't anyone mentioned the Desert Fox? He is pretty well the sole historic icon of the the North African Theater - glorification or not. A hand drawn picture of Erwin Rommel in a that famous photo of him in a captured British lorry would be great. Some historians call him a tactical genius - others characterize him as a ruthless master of a modern killing machine. Whatever he really was, for this game at least, I don't believe his value, even for the artwork, should be overlooked. jim.
  4. It wasn't my intention to engage the Tiger at first - but he broadsided a platoon at an intersection and I knew if I started retreating he'd just pick them off one at a time. The first tank got nailed but managed to get a shot off - no effect. The second, firing with bow down - same thing, then it got nailed as well. Third tank still engaging - will be decided next round. jim.
  5. I've rarely if ever played as the Soviets in CMBB. Every time I play the Reds I'm having a bit of a tough go taking on Tiger Is in urban combat. I'm currently employing T34/85 Model 1944 late tanks - to my dismay they're just bouncing off their turrets at ranges less than 100 meters. I do understand there is a significant difference in the frontal armour on both vehicles. Ironically whenever I've fielded Tigers against these chaps, very often the gun is damaged. Any thoughts on this variation of the T34. Do I have to wait for a lucky hit at odd angles or the rear of the tank or is it hit and miss taking on Tiger Is at or near the front of the tank (at close range)? Are the optics on the T34 really that bad? jim. [ September 15, 2003, 03:11 PM: Message edited by: jimcorrigan ]
  6. I'm going to double check the update - I thought I did upgrade to the 44.03 but I might be wrong. As well, could you post a list of your settings for CMBB if it's not a problem - maybe I have something set incorrectly. These blasted cards always seem to get more and more complex. Thx! Your help is much appreciated. Jim.
  7. I am also encountering the same problem. Originally, I was having this problem with an earlier GE force card until the first patch came out. It was fixed. Of course, a year later my friend picks up an extra FX 5200 card - all excited I install it and there it is - back again. This problem only occurs in between turns on CMBB. I'd really appreciate some help here - the time it takes to load is excruciatingly slow. Jim.
  8. Hey Rosen, Although I don't profess to be an expert in either CMBO or BB, I often find it easy to use simple tactics to outsmart Soviet attacks or defenses - in the early engagements in the packaged game. However, I found that many of my tactics were only really limited to the scope of the scenario itself. In long, drawn out engagements, my tactics would be much more conservative and in my opinion, much less effective. I guess in many of the smaller scenarios, the quality of the German units and armour really do provide the German side with visible superiority. However, moving into the later engagements, with limited supplies and battered units, you'll find that being the Germans will quickly become a liability. As soon as that "quality control" trickles down, you'll find that wearing a flat brimmed helmet will be much more challenging than you originally anticipated. Jim.
  9. I've been away from the board for a while. Where is the new info on CM III posted? I think the Italian theater, if my interpretation is correct, would be an excellent third release. However, what I'd really like to see is a full game - I've seen some fantastic mod programs on many sites. I'd like to see Battlefront release a mod program that would allow the user to change the theater accordinly. In my opinion, that would really bring the game to a whole new level. Trust me, I'm not complaining. I just received my CMBB and it's phenomenal. I just took a glimpse at "To the Volga" and was thrown back by the scale of the battle. Like one of the chaps said, whatever Battlefront chooses to release, I will follow. Jim.
  10. No One Lives Forever - 9.5 Unreal Tournament - 9.3 NHL 2003 - 9.1 Combat Mission BB - 6.8 Hmmm. Judging by this chap's reviews, he's probably under 30, skipped military history (or general history for that matter) in university, and has an attention span of around 30 seconds. I'm not being a crtic - I find that most of today's youth share similar habits. I think he's forgotten that most of the console games that are aimed at an age group of 15 to 25. To an 18 year old, CMBB would seem just too hard. My 23 year old brother in laws just stared at the game incesantly and asked "so I have to tell them what to do - that's too hard!" Rather than see the game for what it is, this evaluator is too busy staring at pumpkin shaped heads. Where's my soundtrack? Waaaaaa! This made me laugh - "you will come to discover that the computer-controlled opponent hardly ever makes a tactical mistake." Sorry chap, the first World War was the war to end all wars for a reason. Maybe he'll have to READ a book for a change rather than learning all eight buttons on a playstation console controller. Forum members, my apologies for my harshness. I do realize that the people tho write for these columns don't really have any credentials other than a few years in front of their TV molesting joysticks. Honestly, based on his clear bias for console games, he shouldn't even be looking at games that require a keyboard - it's just a little out of his league. Jim.
  11. One of my friends was playing the Citadel scenario when he encountered something truly unique. He claimed that when he approached the scenario's default first row of defences, he "drove" over a cowering anti-tank team with a Panzer IV. Apparently it appeared that he could no longer engage the target with his main gun so he just decided to drive over them. When the team appeared on the other side of the tank, they were deceased. Is this a new CM feature? If so, why haven't I heard of this until now? Jim.
