SP is still imo one of the best games ever made. The updated graphics with the versions WinSPWW2 and WinSPMBT make it very playable again... SP has so many features that I wish for in CM. It being 2D top down view however, I hop back and forth between the two (CM and SP) for my fixes. SP is also a great source for scenario conversions to CM, maps not so much. However.....
I do think the SP map generator could be used to generate  rough templates to use as overlays in the CM map editor to assist with campaign map making. Of course all the details the CM map editor provides would make the map look much better in the end as a straight SP map converted to CM does not look great hence why I mention to use them as "rough templates".
I do know that the SP map generator creates better looking 2D, top down, random generated maps (that make sense) compared to the maps that CMx1 3D randomly generated that is for sure. Remember those? lol.

    ^ This right here! ^
If you have a preferred era/theater of the games that are available, I'd go with that one to start. Having more interest, imho, will help keep you interested and motivated to play, learn the interface and system. Then branch out from there.

Finally decided to try my hand at scenario design in Red Thunder. I'll be starting with this small, 800mx640m map based on a large section of 2 ASL maps. and based on that, I'll probably keep armor to a minimum. There is more sloping terrain than the screenshots indicate but the western bank of the river definitely has a pretty large open area in the center.

I stumbled onto that Pamyat Naroda site while researching stuff for use with ASL and it has been extremely useful. Maybe if I get back in CMRT (CMCW has been taking up all my spare time) I can put it to use.

If people want realism they should join an army as that's the only place they will find it. No game is perfect as somebody will always find something to complain about.

Double Deuce got a reaction from Artkin in When did the ITOW start reaching US units in Germany in numbers?
It's been a long time ago but iirc, when I got to Germany (Baumholder) in June 1983 we still had the M150's in 2/68 Armor, 8th ID. We were always at the end of the queue for new vehicles and had only just got the M60A3 about 2 months before I got there. I believe we got the M901's in my first year there so late '83, early '84.

When I was called upon to research the timeframe I had to look no farther than the pile of dog-eared reference books on my bookshelf. It was as though i had been prepping for this project since 1979. This was MY timeframe hobbyist-wise.

Not an expert on TO&E, but if a designer thinks a bit out of the box, an early war battle could be created. But the designer's tools will be limited. Just trying to design such a battle will be educational for those new to this hobby. Like I said above, a German motorized infantry truck attack across a long map ending in a infantry attack on a crossroad village might be fun to design and at least give get a sense of what it was like operationally in the summer of 1941.

You're all missing the point ... given BFC's record with predicting conflicts in their games, it must mean that Black Sea will get Brits in a module.
