  1. Thank you for your suggestions. It appears that the problem is an intermittant one. I tried again tonight with anther game-playing brother. After three failures similar to last night, we were able to connect to each other in each direction and get the game going and responding normally. We have no clue as to where the problem came from. We did note that although I would have four successful pings for each try, it would take him anywhere between 16 and 24 pings to get one successfull response. Oddly, he was getting that low level of ping success even when we had the game in action over the net. Ever heard of that one before? To respond to your suggestions: "No" firewall at all(though I will have one soon.) Thanks for the link to my IP address. Works nicely. And thanks again for helping out.
  2. Previous to tonight I have successfully played over the internet with my brother. However tonight when trying to join the game (him hosting) I get the "unable to connect" message as soon as I hit OK. With me hosting, I get an unusual IP address (127.0.0.1) and he gets an "unable to make contact" message. We both successfully pinged our respective IP addresses. We have successfully played over the internet, last time about two months ago. Game version: 1.12 My machine: - Dell Dimension 8100, Pentium 4, 1.3 GHz (purch July 01) - Windows ME Thanks for helping!
  3. Thanks. Didn't know that. Upon your reply, I read the documentation more carefully and found the requirement on page 7. I have three brothers who all play the game (guess why I play now, too?) They never mentioned the "CD in drive" requirement. Since it has all been "pick-up" games for me, I have only referred to documentation in moments of extreme need. Finding my skills at moving around the battlefield in need of improvement, I started playing some solo games, which is what lead to my question. Thanks for being gentle about it. Regards, Otto
  4. I followed instructions for a full installation. With the CD OUT of the drive (and door closed), when I start the game, I get the following message: "No CD-ROM detected. Insert Combat Mission CD-ROM and retart the game to get full functionality. IMPORTANT: Game can only function if you did a FULL installation" The game does start when the above instructions are followed, BUT... if a "full" installation has been done, is it always required to have the CD loaded?
  5. Turning sound on once the game has started does not seem to cause any further problems. I will try cycling through the options as you suggest. Thanks again.
  6. Well I'll be Montgomery's bat boy! - Shift + S executed during set up worked. I still see the "choose screen" first. After accepting that, the movie and sound start, which is when I hit Shift + S. Amazin'. Any chance this indicates a fix that will get the thing to start "normally." Thanks one heck of a lot for your suggestions!
  7. I hope that there is some help for my problem with the Combat Mission demo. I have downloaded it twice (at 2+ hours each time) and followed suggestions from Combat Mission creators and still cannot get it to run. Here is what happens when I try to run the demo: the resolution selection comes up first, always as 800 X 600 which is correct for my computer. After I accept the selection, the opening screen and sound start and then shortly, sound stops and activity appears to end. I have let the machine sit for at least 15 minutes before ctrl+alt+del to unlock screen. My computer: Dell Dimension 8100, Pentium 4, 1.3 Ghz Features: - Windows ME - 256MB PC800 RDRAM - 32MB NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 4X AGP Graphics card - SB Live! sound card Things I have done so far: 1. Upgraded DirectX to version 8.1 2. Upgraded GeForce video driver (Can't remember version number, but it was something like 28.40. This version was issued at the end of February) 3. Asked Dell to confirm that sound and video cards were not sharing IRQ's. (They say they are not sharing) 4. Deleted the previously downloaded demo and re-downloaded a new one. 5. Confirmed that the screen resolution offered by CMB is the same as my present settings (800 X 600.) 6. Made sure that there was no file named “Bynd Ovr Pref” (CMB suggestion) 7. Did my best to make sure that there was as little running in background as possible. This included making a shortcut to the demo .exe file (so I wouldn’t be running it from Windows Explorer), shutting down the virus detector (Norton) and looking through the list on “close program” and shutting down everything except the keyboard, the shortcut list and three other things I couldn’t identify but one of which caused the computer to shut down when I closed it. Thanks for any suggestions you can offer.
