Yes, I remember that. I'm not sure that the AMD XP processors ever really achieved that distinction.

As I understand it, the AMD Speed Ratings were technically in relation to T-bird Athlons. They weren't meant to offer direct comparison to Intel products but people used them that way anyway. XP2500+ might have been slower than a 2.4 Ghz P4 in some apps and then faster in games. </font>

I think your PC may be a bit underpowered for a game like TOW. I fear mine may be as well, but as I posted earlier, I'm going to buy the game and then see how it runs before I upgrade.

    Good luck!

  4. I extracted this file and played this scenario in standalone. I had more pausing than usual when I play other DropTeam scenarios online. Must be all of the terrain detail.

It looked great though. I really liked the clouds across the planet in the sky effect. The overall color scheme was great. It really looked like an alien world.

  5. I was able to download 7-Zip and I extracted the .rar file into the data directory, but I can't play this scenarion in standalone. It bombs before it finishes loading it up.

I'm at work so I can't play around with it now, but I'm going to try again when I get home.

I may download it again and try extracting it again.

If this is correct, then I probably won't need to upgrade. The only component in my rig that is under the optimum spec is the processor. Video, RAM, and sound card all meet or exceed the spec above. My processor is a AMD Athlon XP 3200+ which is 2.2GHZ clock. That's as high as Socket A went, so in order to upgrade, I would have to scrap my motherboard and video card (mine is a 6800GT AGP card and most newer motherboards no longer support AGP). I think I'll wait and see how my rig runs this before I go out and purchase components to upgrade. Top end P4 Extreme or AMD 64 processors are currently between $800-$1000. Hard to believe that those prices are just for the processor. A high end motherboard to put the processor in is $200+. A good PCI Express video card is $300+. Thank God the game only costs $45! Ha ha!

AMD's are faster per clockrate and their "3xxx+" ratings are meant to simulate what Intel's clockspeed was with the Netburst processors (aka Pentium-4s).

That means an AMD 3200+ (XP and 64) is about as fast as a 3.2 GHz Pentium-4.

(This won't be true anymore for Intel Core2Duo processors and is not true for Pentium-Ms, only Netburst CPUs) </font>

Whaddaya think? Am I gonna need to upgrade to play this game with all the bells and whistles turned on?

    Any feedback would be welcome.

You'll be able to play in software mode at 640x480 in 16bit color. Expect about 8 frames per second. </font>
  9. My System:

AMD Athlon XP 3200+ (2.2GHZ Clock Speed - Probably equivalent to a P4 2.5GHZ processor)

    NVIDIA 6800GT Video Card - 256MB Memory

    1.5GB Kingston HyperX RAM

Creative Labs SoundBlaster Gamer 5.1 Sound Card

    ABIT Motherboard 400MHZ FSB - Socket A

Whaddaya think? Am I gonna need to upgrade to play this game with all the bells and whistles turned on?

    Any feedback would be welcome.

  10. Would you consider an infantry hand held weapon that acts much like a can opener on armor, sort of like an electric battleaxe or a light saber. After all, these guys are space vikings.

This would be really cool when infantry slugged it out with infantry, guys getting their limbs lopped off.

  11. Any Paladin variant, especially in CTF games. Paladin's have the speed to get in, grab the flag, and get out. A successful flag capture usually puts the score out of reach.

I would have liked to have seen that. I had a run-in with some infantry the other evening. I was in a paladin armed with mortar. They kept using their jetpacks to close the distance. I ended up backing out of the fight because I wasn't sure what their capabilities were.
  13. I read the interview. AMAZING! I found myself cheering when I read this:

[Matt] Let me talk about a key moment that occurred when I demoed the game last weekend. In this battle, I had an ad hoc mixed Russian detachment of infantry, Anti-tank Rifle teams, a single KV-1 and 45mm AT guns tasked to defend a train station against a strong armor heavy German assault with infantry support. My initial disposition was pretty good and the first few attempts by the German AI to breach my trench lines were pushed back. After regrouping and gaining some reinforcements, the Germans concentrated on a weak flank area in one of my trenches and breached my defenses and stormed across. It was at this time, that my KV-1, having been occupied on my other flank, came over to try and stem the flow of German infantry and armor that was quickly gaining a foothold to route my remaining forces. As the KV-1 took round after round from the German armor, it was finally immobilized and the crew, now badly shaken, bailed out, only to be gunned down by MG fire. Nearby lying in a trench, I had the remnants of a 45mm AT gun crew (the gun had run out of ammo repulsing the first attack). One innovative feature of ToW is that you can not only pick up discarded weapons and equipment from the ground, but you can also recrew vehicles and guns that are left abandoned. You can even capture enemy equipment as well. I ordered this gun crew to charge for the KV-1 as the Germans pushed ahead with their assault. Enemy infantry fire cut down the crew as they made their way to the tank, but one guy made the perilous journey and climbed in through the open hatch. Myself and about 5 other guys that were watching the game sat with our jaws wide open as he made his way to the driver compartment to start up the KV-1’s engine (each vehicle has a crew monitor which allows you see what position they are in). Once the KV was running, I guess he noticed that it wasn’t going anywhere, so he jumped into the gunners seat and begun to swing its big turret around to get a rear shot on a German Pz III that had ignored him. We watched as the cannon reload indicator slowly filled up, holding our breaths in anticipation. He finally got the gun loaded, raised his gun just a tad and fired. We literally jumped up and begun yelling and applauding the effort, even though he missed.

Man does this sound good. I'll spec out a P4 Extreme tonight!
