  1. You don't think they tipped the brandy away afterwards, do you? Not the Jack Tars of the RN. What do you think they toasted his immortal memory with?
  2. Appropriately for a sailor, Nelson was pickled in a cask of brandy and then in a tub of neat spirits tp preserve him for his return to England. It was pretty unknown at the time for naval casualties to be returned home, for obvious reasons. In fact during these times dead men were pitched off the side of the ship even in the middle of battle to prevent them becoming obstructions. They weren't even buried per se, but just dumped.
  3. Well it's not winter here. Nor Thanksgiving. (Just thought I would welcome you back with a contrary opinion!)
  4. Navy frigate sent to Libya with four missiles KInd of like the whole "Every second man gets a rifle" thing. Even worse, the story says "the Royal Navy said it was unable to spare a warship to guard British waters for the whole of October after last year’s defence cuts". First they came for the Harriers....
  5. Perhaps we have different definitions of interesting!
  6. Well I have no experience with other NZ cities, so I'm just trying to be fair about target designation.
  7. Personally I would love to be flying over AKL with a full bomb load.
  8. Well I suggest it would be a worthwhile investment for the RNZAF. It would be a huge force muiltiplier.
  9. Not to mention the generational difference between what the Argies can field versus a Eurofighter.
  10. 1/4 million quid for that?? Somebody needs to edit a few zeroes out of the price.
  11. Well 4 Eurofighters would probably just about do it. I never realised just how **** the Argie Air Force was these days until I just looked http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argentinian_Air_Force
  12. End of an era. The US has agreed to buy all of Britain's decommed Harriers and spare parts. What happens next time the Argies invade?
  13. Yeah it doesn't really matter if the Earth is slagged into glass if we don't see daylight for 12 months afterwards and are breathing in all those nasty isotopes to boot.
  14. Well Logan, time to stop being a burden on the rest of us...
  15. I used to work with a cameraman who had been a nuclear weapons armourer with the RAF during the early 1980s. His job was to fit the weapons onto the aircraft. He told me that they would be locked in to hardened bunkers with the plane crew and other techs on a week on, week off basis. During their week inside they were cut off from any outside media. The only contact they had was with their chain of command. It was designed to stop them from making judgement calls about whether they were doing the right thing or not if the order came to bomb up and attack.
  16. Because a 12 year old NZ air cadet could have been the key to the future survival of humanity!
  17. I guess the fallout volume is all a bit of a moot point if a full-scale nuke war had kicked off. None of us would have been around to stress about whether we were going to get a demographic increase in cancer in 10 years' time.
  18. I also wondered, seeing as it descends by chute, what the chances were of knackering one with AA fire?
  19. Last B-53 gets dismantled. Imagine this bad boy landing on your foxhole!
  20. Spetznaz = Russian = non-NATO = Lawful Good.
  21. And now the French have been fined for advancing on the Haka. The IRB seriously need to be locked in a sack and dropped into the Pacific.
  22. The current Kettlerisation I have read is that: 1) NATO forces knew Gaddafi was in the convoy. 2) They bombed it. 3) They "rapidly despatched" an undercover assassination squad to the site. This squad moved through the convoy survivors and located Gaddafi. 4) They shot him in the legs to stop him escaping and then stuck him in the drain pipe. 5) They then alerted rebel fighters to his location. 6) When the rebels arrived, the SAS / DSGE / GSG 9 / Rainbow 6 dudes hyped everyone up to the point where somebody shot the Colonel or the NATO guys shot him without anybody having a clear idea of what went on.
  23. That's the current Kettlerian conspiracy theory. You'll find it propagated on plenty of anti-globalisation, anti-Western sites. It's part of the logic chain that West = Evil and that pardoxically makes a martyr out of Gaddafi and pretty much says anybody from Libya is a chump who couldn't possibly organsie anything for themselves.
  24. The article is more about things like referees penalising the same thing (scrum wheels) in opposite ways and the overall poor management of the actual game by the IRB, as opposed to their attention to detail on the $$$ making aspects of the sport.
