  1. I have 5 books on Kursk. Some new information is coming out and was captured in Glantz et al's "The Battle of Kursk" and "Kursk 1943: The Soviet General Staff Study". A new book by Steven Newton is "Kursk: The German View". This is a fresh translation of the US Army's commissioned report right after the war's end. I just started it.

If I were to recco one it would be "The Battle of Kursk" because it is not for any one side.

  2. In my limited play of operations I never liked the next battle set-up. I think the system would move your troops even after you took a few turns to put them in more tactically correct positions.

The "front line" never made sense. Perhaps I will re-look. The best campaign system I have come across was linked campaigns in the EF/WF games.

They gave the designer lots of control. For example branching to different sub-battles based on the previous results. You could design with

any number of maps and OOBs

  3. Sorry for the cryptic message. I guess the question is what to do productivly or for fun when you have the battle won and there are turns left to play. One thing is to set up for the next "battle". Perhaps form a defence or attack

formation. This applies to those times the AI gets defeated quickly. I guess I was also looking for battles that play like a campaign where the time in between battles and firefights may be several turns of repositioning. To often I wish a battle would last longer on good maps or for a better campaign system. I sometimes find troops(even) for the winner are not well deployed to meet a counterattack at the end of a battle - if one actually came in. This can happen during last minute charges of the flags.

  4. I have an out of print book called "Panzer Grenadier Division Grossdeutschland" by Herbert Scheibert. It is a squadron/signal publication.

    Copyright 1977.

You may have it. It is a picture book BUT has some good maps and OOBs for the start of each year. It has a section and map related to Lutschessa. It lists three Kampfgruppes:

Lindemann, Warschenauer, Kohler. Looks like Lindemann is part of the 110 Infantry Div..

On another page, KG Lorenz is listed. If you guys would like a specific photocopy from the book let me know.

  5. I would have to say 3 Sept. 1942:

The Germans held the most ground at that point.

    - Battle of Alam el Halfa ended in North Africa

and they could push no farther into the Middle East

    - In southern Russia, on 3 Sept Paulus's

XIV Panzer Corps linked up with Hoth's tanks

to form a pocket just outside Stalingrad.

They had not attacked the faithful city yet.

PS I have been reading and re-reading Glantz and House's section on July 12, 1943 (Prokhorovka).

This merits consideration too. But given the Confederates never penetrated farther into the Union than at Gettysburg, I think Sept 3, 1942 is closer to that situation than Kursk.

  7. Yes, you have to go to the Boots and Tracks

site to get the battle. I do not have a problem

with the Depot per say. I just prefer to have folks come to the B&T site. I lose out on potential reviews. That's a negative. Perhaps

I will do a mass posting once my Kursk stuff is

    done for the 60th party.

  8. All mine at Boots and Tracks are designed to be played blind. The briefings are the place to put intel for players. Perhaps more attention needs

to be placed on the intel sections. It may be interesting to give a defender a weak force and lots of intel compared to a stronger attacker

with less information. I wonder if you can balance a battle simply via intel differences? Probably. There might be battles out there like this but I have not really noticed.

    Good thread.
