1. derekd11, I'm playing in SuperTed's Newbie tournament. I had never used any mods. My opponent Dan suggested that I try some sound mods. I downloaded Scipio's sound files and, after some false starts, managed to get the new sound files installed. MAJOR difference in the sound of the game. You didn't mention what kind of mods you were considering, but I strongly suggest trying some of the sounds available. You'll be glad you did!
2. BeWary, Thanks for the ideas. I should have checked the full file names. There have been enough times I've overwritten files I really wanted to keep that I should have noticed the anomaly. I think I was so excited about the new sound effects, and the fact they played in WINAMP, that I neglected to check the amazing fact there were sets of two files with the "same" name. I'll check as soon as I get home this evening. Thanks again. Dave
3. At the suggestion of my opponent in SuperTed's Newbie Tournament, I downloaded all of Scipio's sound mods. I unzipped the files and copied the wav files into the C:\PROGRAM FILES\CMBO\WAV folder. I then played each original file and the updated version in WINAMP, so I could tell how significant the improvement was. Then I deleted each of the original sound files, so all I had in the WAV folder was the most recent single version of each file number. I put together a QB and selected lots of sharpshooters and German MG's because their new sounds are so distinctive. When I played the game, all of the sounds I heard were the original sound effects. What have I done wrong or failed to do? This is really aggravating, because when I use Explorer and double click on the files in the WAV folder, I have the new files. Maybe this is very basic stuff, but I'm stumped. Help would be appreciated. Thanks ahead of time. [ 01-02-2002: Message edited by: Dave H ]

4. I can't imagine there are many gaming web sites where the 4 responses on this page to this question have two guys in their 60's, one in his 40's, and one only 15. This game has really brought generations together like nothing else I've ever seen. Oh, I'll personally hit the big 5-0 in October of this year. Happy New Year to all the people who have become new friends through this board. It's a pleasure to have met all of you. Dave
5.
quote:
Am I the only one who remembers the "IT" project from the early 80s? Or that it was a spoof?

Are you referring to the wargame where you could fight World War 2 with a counter for each individual soldier? Yeah, I had that, too. I kept the counters for my uncles and father-in-law. Figured nobody would notice. Somehow I never found time to play the entire campaign. It was pretty cool, but the rent for the warehouse to hold the boxes got a little steep.
6. Is it so difficult to remember that somehow the troops of the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, Poland, and dozens of other nations actually managed to cooperate fighting a common enemy on the Western Front? With the level of name calling, generalizing, and all-around bickering I've seen on thread after thread, I wonder how many of our fathers and grandfathers would be proud of our attitudes. I also wonder how much worse these attitudes are going to get when CM2 comes out and this forum adds (I hope) some members whose relatives fought on the Eastern Front.
7. Don't know about anybody else, but I am 100% in agreement with Wally's World. Selecting what units you will have and what kind of quality seems to me to lead directly to the so-called "ideal" unit mix, like the IG, LMG, flamethrower mix somebody was supporting recently. This takes away such a huge element of unpredictability! To me the QB is the feature of this game that gives unlimited replayability. When the computer selects your units there's always an inevitable shock at what you had hoped for and didn't get. Then you have to compensate for what's missing. I suspect this issue of using what's available would seem very familiar to any leader.
8. Please, don't do this. Next we'll get a "Mechanic" to get vehicles running again. Then it's only another step to the "Wizard" with a spell to change the weather. Seriously, in the time frame a game covers, getting up to 10 casualties back to full combat effectiveness seems a little miraculous. I seem to remember a medic in my son's Command & Conquer or something similar. Let's leave it there.
