  1. Anybody know? The first user made mod? Just curious. Gyrene
  2. Curse you Wacky for completely igonoring and important subsection of CM players, the hearing impaired! I demand that you make you make your new sound mods available in closed captioning! {gunfire sounds} Bang bang bang Gyrene
  3. If you like the trees, wait until you see the railroad tracks! Gyrene
  4. Ah, very cool Tom! I'm glad the QTVR concept got some attention this time around. The hardest part of making one of these is to keep from bumping the view from where it's at Here's the other use for QTVR & CM Gyrene
  5. By Parabellum: <blockquote>quote:</font><hr>I see you also own Panzer Commander and its manual... <hr></blockquote> I did think that was unusually lucid for Iron Chef... Gyrene
  6. I had seen that site before a while back and I really liked the map of Mogadishu they have there. My Hangar was right by the first "A" in MogAdishu Airport, the way out of town to the Russian MIG base at Bale Dogle was up East to Via Roma (The Pakistani base was where the larger streets meet at the East end of the runway), past the traffic circle (Where a plattoon of Marine grunts and some LAV's lived) to Via Lenin and North out of town. Sometimes we left town via Hawlwadig (I didn;t really know these names when I wasthere) which was pretty crazy because it was much more built up and went past an open air market where we often took some shots. Just thinking that I regularly convoyed past the Olympic Hotel and the future sites of the crashes an the fire fight is kind of strange to me. By the time I left in March of '93 we pretty much owned that town. Too bad it all went to crap once we pulled out and the UN and Army took over, they pretty much handed everything back to the Warlords and pulled back to the Airport. Many Green Berets reported that Task Force Ranger's dealings with the locals was less than "diplomatic" making a tough situation even tougher. The whole episode didn't need to happen. Gyrene
  7. <blockquote>quote:</font><hr> Damn, I´m too new on the board to know how this has started... Anyone remember what post "flamed" this kinda ûberFinn behavior... Our ûbertactic wont work in the future when everyone knows about it... <hr></blockquote> Jussi, maybe Tero can point you out to the origins of the ÜberFinn phenomenom. No real harm is meant by any of it, matter of fact Finns can take a joke much better than either Americans or Australians, we could learn a thing or two from you guys. Gyrene
  8. Look here for CADPAT/MARPAT connections The Russians have had "pixelated" cammo for longer than Canada, although I don't find their pattern particularly effective. Here are some samples, from this very site. Gyrene [ 01-15-2002: Message edited by: Gyrene ]</p>
  9. <blockquote>quote:</font><hr> ...mrs... <hr></blockquote> Robinson, coo-coo coo-choo. Between periods of the Lakers game they discussed why they should not let the FAQ thread drop out of the map, because when it does someone will invariably ask about how they can take screen shots of CM. But soon they were distracted by the half time show, which involved a bevy of Finnish girls in snow camouflage bikinis demonstrating how they could disable Russian tanks with... Gyrene
  10. <blockquote>quote:</font><hr> When I was visiting the Parola armour museum a couple of years ago, I stopped by and listened when a tank veteran was expaining how they used a captured, immobile T-26 in the Winter War -- after politely asking the former owners to vacate the vehicle -- to knock out other, still advancing 26's. Unfortunately, I cannot remember his name anymore. <hr></blockquote> I thought the Finns knocked out T26's by picking them up and throwing them at other T26's, or by swinging mighty trees like golf clubs and sending the Russian tanks back to where they came from. 11. Panzer Leader, scan your pictures at no more than 200 dpi, plain RGB and leave the scaling at 100% Once in photoshop adjust the image size with the image size controls (Image menu -> Image size, set units to "pixels" to make it easier). Something like 800x600 or so is plenty I'd think, maybe 1024 x768 for detail. Then save as jpeg and tweak with the quality setting to get a good compromise between quality and size. Gyrene
  12. <blockquote>quote:</font><hr> FYI The size of the photo file is attributable to the number of d.p.i. (dots per inch) at which it is resolved. Another issue is the type of file that you choose to save in. It is conceiveable that a straight image file saved at a high resolution could be very large, especially if one didn't use a compressed format like .jpg or similar. Another issue is the color level (8-bit, 16-bit, etc that is selected. One doesn't always need 32-bit color when scanning. One problem that comes up frequently is that people scan at way too high a resolution for their intended output, thinking that they somehow will get better quality upon viewing it. The scan resolution, be it 300 d.p.i. or 3000 d.p.i., should correlate to the resolution of the viewing media. <hr></blockquote> Gunnergoz, whatever the causes 900MB for a picture file is extreme, perhaps there was a typo in PL's original post. 90MB is a more realistic number for a high dpi scan, and even that is too much for most non printing press use for a single photograph. 13. <blockquote>quote:</font><hr> I really shouldn't date myself, but is anyone here a fan of Squad Leader, but not ASL? I got into SL many years ago, and tried keeping up with the rules (from Cross of Iron to Crescendo of Doom and finally Anvil of Victory). I thought about switching over to ASL, but felt that it was just TOO detailed. For example, I thought SL did a good job of simulating the role of a platoon commander (direct your men here, tell them to fire on this target - don't care how, just get it done). ASL, on the other hand, seemed to be a true squad leader simulation. You determined if your troops double timed, moved, assaulted, advanced, or human-waved across the street. Anyone else miss the relative simplicity of SL? Ace <hr></blockquote> I remember reading on the box for the ASL rules that the new system "Greatly increased the playability and enjoyment of the game", I really liked SL, so I bought them. I bit of false advertizing there, I think... Then I bought "Beyond Valor", because I needed some counters, of course. Then I bought "Paratrooper" because it had the tutorial and was supposed to be the easiest way in. After that I bought "West of Alamein" and "Yanks" because I needed (Or thought I needed) all the extra rules that came with those sets, along with all the maps that all the cool looking scenarios in the mags needed, but I didn't have. Then I bought "Gung Ho" because, well, look at my forum nickname. I was never able to find "Code of Bushido", which was very disappointing, but saved me about $50. I finally kicked the habit in frustration and with the dim prospect of ever finding anyone to play against, before I got suckered into buying "Hollow Legions" or anything else. I did end up buying a lot of extras like Annuals, General mags and the counter Plano boxes. Curse the lawyer they let write those rules! Can you imagine if popular games like Monopoly or Clue had the same guy writing the rules? Gyrene
  14. Send me the mod already! Before they shut down your email account for too much traffic. Gyrene
  15. <blockquote>quote:</font><hr> You know, ASL still has CM beat in two respects - Goliaths and Anti-tank Dogs! <hr></blockquote> Don't forget horses and M16 Quad .50's And cliff climbing, nationality modifiers, motorcycles etc etc. Gyrene
  16. You think that VASL is even slower than Face to Face? FTF is already glacial as it is... Btw, GibsonM's excel spreadsheet for ASL looks like it's a real time saver from what I've seen so far, very nice. It might cut turn times from 2 hours down to only 1. Gyrene
  17. <blockquote>quote:</font><hr>Hand drawn by Gordon Molek What the heck???? That Molek dude is all over.... <hr></blockquote> LOL!!! I saw his name, but I'm so used to seeing it I just glossed it over. Mike, we can try pushing a couple of squads and an HT or two around. I'll dust out my ASL rule book. Gyrene
  18. I've observed a few games online (A very neat feature we could use in CM), but after watching the "locals" speed playing I didn't feel comfortable enough to jump in a game. We could give it a shot, I remember very little of the rules, though. Gyrene
  19. Have you guys seen This? Fear no cats, "clumsy losers" or sneezing. Gyrene
  20. <blockquote>quote:</font><hr> BTW: If you want an Excel spreadsheet that removes most of the die rolling send me an email. It covers IFT resolution and AFV's but you still need to study chapters A - G. <hr></blockquote> I'd like to take a look at that, if you don't mind. Gyrene
  21. <blockquote>quote:</font><hr> Panzer IV in problems?[*] Chaffee with dual 40mm AA (a real thing) <hr></blockquote> The M19. Saw a lot of action in Korea. Gyrene
  22. What? No "Code of Bushido" or "Gung Ho" in that pile? You guys are light weight! Seriously, ASL is the best game I barely got to play. 5 to 6 hours for what in CM would be a 300 point game was a bit too much. Gyrene
  23. Tanks a Lot (I think) made a small map of a city on hilly terrain that did an excellent job of capturing that close-in feel. Now if I could only find that map... Gyrene
  24. I say lock this up and move it to the General Forum with the rest of the Off Topic stuff that props up on the Combat Mission forum. Otherwise then there is favoritism for the Penganites in this Forum. Peng is better than Gates Slut, btw. Gyrene
  25. Nope, not gamey at all. A bridge is a bridge. Gyrene
