A Small Arms Firing Mechanics Question
Gyrene replied to Chad Harrison's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
You all disappoint me. If any of you had paid any attention to your historical documents (John Wayne westerns & Star Trek battles) you would realize that all firefights are accomplished like a tennis match. I go, then you go. Your squad cannot return fire at the retreating troops simply because it is the opposing troops' turn to fire. It was good enough for Napoleon, so it's good enough for you. Huzzah! ESC minimizing rules! Long live the ESCape key! Makes playing at work very inviting Gyrene

Gyrene replied to Nyeshostakavich's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Screw reality! I want '45 pattern USMC squads to go head to head with SS Hamsters! I want Mongols vs Finns! I want M16 riding Samurai to clash with HMG-running Zulus! Weeee! Where are my meds???? Gyrene -
New " BATTLE OF THE BULGE " mod ! ( large pics inside )
Gyrene replied to a topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Wow...Maybe the hype is worth it! Gyrene -

quote:
With many hundreds of units available I'd say it would still fill a considerable number of pages

That's ok. In many reviews I read how good the CM manual was and that was exactly what I was expecting. I was kind of disappointed when I found no unit descriptions, I'd love something like the descriptions in the ASL rulebook. Gyrene

Well, it's nice that it can happen, but it is also cool that it's a very, very rare occurance. I've killed many HT's, Hummels and Hetzers with .50's but never anything bigger than that. I still think that .50's should be more effective against light buildings and wooden bunkers though, at least to the point of reducing their cover factor for the people inside. Gyrene

I'd settle for a pic of each unit and a brief description / history of each. Gyrene

quote:
I am a professional mac Tech geek and it pains me to admit I do not know what a UT launcher is.

Tom, the UT launcher is just the Unreal Tournament app to start the game. There's a beta version that is OS X native and uses Open GL exclusively. Gyrene

Immobilized. A burst of .50's has enough juice to cut tank tracks, I guess. Losing the TC is actually quite a bit of bad luck as they have reaction times faster than hummingbirds on crack. Gyrene

New CM Web site: MODs & MODers...
Gyrene replied to PawBroon's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
2cv's rule! Too bad they are so hard to get here, otherwise it'd probably have one. (Of course not as my only car, I'm not that stupid ) I don't get the whole 3 lug nut idea though... Gyrene -
Interestingly enough many RAVE games do work in under Classic mode, Unreal Tournament is one of them. (Yes, in Rave) There is a new UT launcher that is OS X native and runs in OpenGL, but the Rave version works fine. CM and OS X might not be as unattainable as we think. After a shaky start I now really really like OS X, and I am more than ready not to use 9 anymore. Gyrene

New CM Web site: MODs & MODers...
Gyrene replied to PawBroon's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Well bugger all, Pawbroon is making an assault boat mod too. Can the CM community handle to impact of 3 boat mods? Gyrene -
A whole freaking bunch by some estimates, or a sh*t pot full by others. Gyrene

Running CM on a new Ti PB should be roughly similar to running CM on a 16mb Rage 128 Pro card, and that's not too bad. In any case it'll be much better than what I started playing CM with - A Rev D 333mhz iMac with the lovely 6mb Rage C card. The new iMac will be a nice CM machine, aside from the odd GeForce glitch. Gyrene
-
CMBO is the only program that keeps me from using OS X full time, I use it as often as I can otherwise. *Maybe* a revision of RAVE for OS X will come around. Gyrene

Ever since Google came along I seldom use Sherlock to search the Web anymore, but I'd give your plug ins a go. Gyrene -

quote:
Oh BTW Jason, I took the liberty of saving this information in a word document for future reference. Did you know you just wrote a three and a half page report?

Yeah, he's slowing down...He's usually good for at least 7 pages. Gyrene

Machine gun effectiveness vs. halftracks
Gyrene replied to roodboy's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
German HT's are fairly safe from .50's if facing them dead on and being at least 150m away. Getting any closer or turning is asking for trouble. .50's on the ground might be more useful vs TD's and tanks than the vehicle mounted ones because they can hit lower on the armor. Gyrene -
How do you use your Axis armor?

quote:
Maximus! Where the hell have you been keeping yourself, ol buddy, ol chap? Say something insulting or sarcastic so I know it's really you.

Colonel, this is an old post from May of last year. For a second I thought that Abbott and Maximus were back. Modders: what are you working on?
Gyrene replied to AndrewTF's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
I'm making another Assault Boat mod I like Gustav's boat, but I want to make a high res version, just because there isn't one and frankly we're running out of stuff to mod. Gyrene -
Is the Mod community shrinking?
Gyrene replied to Michael Dorosh's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
CMMOS has not had much impact in my mod using career on the Mac, matter of fact it has made it easier. Most recent CMMOS compatible mod packs have been thoughtfully organized in folders (Andrew's Jeep, for example) which makes it easy for me to use the Mac Mod Manager to pick the .bmp's I need, but of course it's not as convenient as CMMOS. I agree with MikeD's comments about diminishing returns. We're not likely to see mods that any real improvement on many of the current top-shelf mods and the caliber of the modders themselves is very very high now. Sadly, we seem to have passed the "Golden Age" of modding when everyone felt comfortable in releasing mods as the state of the art wasn't so high and every new mod was fun to try out at least once. That's the price we pay for the super high quality stuff we use now. Gyrene -

The one thing more annoying than pop ups!!!! Nothing worse than havong to listen to the MIDI version of "Eye of the Tiger" or "Oops I did it again", horrible stuff! Gyrene -

I might think of bribbing Hakko to be extra clumsy in the gun range if the GM in the Magenta Onion game starts to get too "creative" Hmm... Gyrene -
You never noticed that? Really? Gyrene
