  1. The German 37mm AT gun was called the "doorknocker," because IIRC, the T-34 was generally proof against it. Try the larger caliber guns. The 75mm Pak40 works especially well, and even more so when working in pairs with the same or near-same LOS. You could also try a more IMO "gamey" approach, by using massed small-caliber FlaKs/AA guns. These fire rapidly and, while not usually strong enough to penetrate frontal armor, can hit quickly and repeatedly enough to cause AFV crews to panic and bail. HTH, Fan
  2. I had read somewhere in one of these forums that these truck-mounted flaks had AP invulnerability? I'm about to engage a friend in a PBEM as the Krauts, and don't want to appear gamey by including any invulnerable vehicles. I hope any kinks have been worked out by the new patch? Thanks one and all for any help/advice! Fan [ December 23, 2002, 12:45 AM: Message edited by: Fan ]
  3. I agree that this should be looked into, if possible. There ought not be any difference between setup and play, i.e. you shouldn't have to guess whether your dug-in (or not) units will still be in command once you hit "Go."
  4. The times I've heard it pronounced, it rhymed with (and almost sounds like) "Neeper," but with a very soft "D" sound blending in with the "N."
  5. I've seen this very thing happen with an M17, v1.0 at least. No LOS no incoming arty (that I remember anyway), and the M17 just revved up and headed over the ridgeline, where it was promptly taken under fire by a couple of PzIVs and knocked out. QB vs. AI. Haven't used the 17 yet in 1.01.
  6. When, after crawling into bed after 6 straight hours of playing and with visions of putting some molten TNT to your loving girlfriend, you stealthily slip a hand over that way and she says, "Fuggedaboutit. I'm hull-down."
  7. They didn't call those guys the "Death's Head Division" for nothing, did they? Best I've done is a tactical defeat as well.
  8. Well, I had a MG42 HMG with a pretty impressive body count. Rottenfuhrer Dank got 65 infantry casualties and 1 mortar destroyed. Same battle, the AI had a Regular 82mm 6-tube battery that killed 9 of his own men and none of mine.
  9. Well, airbursts will randomnly happen with "normal" arty shells if they land in/near scattered trees, woods, or pines. Then again, there are the VT (Variable Timer) rounds that will airburst over open ground. Only the Allies have these, and they are *extremely* deadly to infantry and open-topped vehicles, just as airbursts in trees are.
  10. A true sniper can take hours or even days to reach his/her firing position (n.b. Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Hathcock, USMC, spending a whole day crossing a single rice paddy in Vietnam). And they might have a mission-specific target (e.g. a local commander or political target). An effective and/or lucky sniper can have an extremely demoralizing effect on local morale. And snipers can often be found as a two-man team, with the shooter having the best gun and the spotter having a back-up scoped rifle. Cpl. Jackson in SPR was more of a sharpshooter IMO, disregarding the "artistic license" granted his character in SPR. And while it would be difficult to hit a man double-timing it to cover, I would venture to say that it is not impossible, especially from a good ways above, where aspect ratio is not changing extremely dramatically.
  11. Sure, I'm a competitive person who likes winning, but like many others who have posted before, I enjoy more the thrill of discovery, the close of battle, the artful and dangerous give-and-take dance of combat, and the repartee that an interesting opponent and I can engage in. I enjoy most of all, perhaps, the chance to learn from better and more practiced opponents, and hopefully in the future, the chance to be able to help others learn. I detest sore losers and also don't much enjoy games where there is none of the back-and-forth banter. Just my $0.02.
  12. Looks like some good info, thanks for the link Frenchy

  14. A friend I used to fly with/against in Air Warrior pointed me in the direction of the demo back in mid-December. As soon as I could pry myself away from the demo, I ordered the full game.
