  1. MDMP = Military Decision Making Process You should see some of the new acronyms used to describe the enemey. In about a year I'll be working in the real world. It will be interesting to see how the military language evolves even more once I retire (transition).
  2. Graphics Overlays. I'd like to be able to draw lines and different shapes on the maps just like an acetate overlay on an actual map. Let us draw up to five different overlays then let us display them individually or in groups. For example I might create a maneuver overlay that depicts company boundaries, engegement areas, phase lines, etc. The next overlay would be a fire support overlay depicting some planned targets, or fire support coordination measures. I could then toggel them on individually or group them together.
  3. Just a few to get started. TacOps 4.0 Feature Request Toolbar. This simply a convenience feature. How about one of those new fangled dockable, customizable, deals. Just like the ones you find in MS Office where you can configure the bar with whatever menu items you want. Variable Turns. You have a game run out feature why not a variable turns. For example turn increments of 1, 2, 5 , and 10? Something along those lines. Or better yet let us enter a turn range from 1-X. Groups. Give us the ability to group units. Not just 0-9 but letters as well maybe 0-J giving us a possible 20 groupings. Not that we’d need that many. Then allow us to assign range and SOP settings to specific groups. Multiple Paths. Right now TacOps uses a single path copy method. Basically a multiple path would be where units move parallel to each other but along the same path . Essentially they maintain the same spacing. For those of you who’ve played BCT or TOP/PITS you know what I mean. Artillery Methods Of Fire. This it essential in depicting more realistic command and control over fire support assets. I’d like to see two methods. AMC or At My Command, this is where a mission is sent and the requesting unit determines when it will be shot. The second method would be the TOT or Time On Target. Basically fire is requested to be shot at a specific time. Both methods are critical when trying synchronize maneuver and fire support. Pre-Plotted Orders. Don’t know what else to call this. Basically it’s a way to assign individual or groups of orders to a hotkey to be executed whenever the player decides. You have two company’s you want to fallback at different time. You could pre-plot orders for each company assign them to two different hotkeys then execute them whenever you decide. The first company executes its orders, then a few turns later you can have the second company execute theirs. Pre-Plot orders makes it easier to manage individual or groups of units. Triggers. Units execute a specific action or orders based on a trigger. A trigger could be caused by enemy or friendly actions or time and location. For example the trigger to fallback to a battle position might be after a unit takes three or four shots at an enemy unit. Or the trigger to move to an attack position could be based on time , at such and such a time move to x position. Another example using time as a trigger would be for all M2s to set an engagement range of 2500 at x time. You could use triggers as Named Areas of Interests or NAIs . For example set a friendly unit to observe a certain area much like the DF TRP function. When an enemy unit enters the observed area a trigger is set off to change engagement ranges, requests for fire, change SOP settings, etc. More Later.
  4. Sir, Here are some thoughts. First of define your training objectives and the end state for your training. For a staff guy the emphasis might be on planning. For the guys with boots on the ground it might be execution. Staff Objectives: Write an OPORD based on the scenario info Develop three COAs and ECOAs Develop a synchronization matrix Apply what you've produced (you gotta let them play the game) Shooter Objectives Deploy your company and assign sectors of fire. Maneuver subordinate units keeping casualties down to X%. Coordinate and synchronize fire support. Employ your ADA assests. Do all this without losing you whole unit. You may consider saving the game every on every fifth game turn or at critical moments in the operation. To be really effective you can setup a battlelab by networking a few computers , hell you could use laptops if you had to. This way you could run CPX style exercises. Another idea would be to use the online documentation for using TacOps for training and write your own little training SOP. Make it a major project then sell it to the BN commander. Remember the training can't be to time or resource intensive or the commander will lose interest. Remember to rehearse some CPXs before you present it to your commander. When the time comes have him participate as one of the subordinate commanders that way he can get a feel for the training value. Don't forget your NCO and enlisted soldiers there is a lot to be gained from teaching them the more tactical side of their jobs. Just a few ideas to get you started.

    TacOps 4.0

I'm always promoting the game to my officers and enlisted soldiers alike. The enlisted guys are more apt to give it a try. The officers seem to think they are to busy. As a BN S-2 NCO I find the games interesting and thought provoking. Like any staff slug I like the planning that goes into the operation. The fulfillment comes at the end, if the plan was executed and the mission was successful. The most benefit is derived from a flawed plan which forces you to analyze why it failed. Planning engagement areas, determining axis of advance, coordinating and synchronizing fire support, task organizing, coordinating and synchronizing maneuuver, plus many more tactical functions. How can you not use this game as a tactical training tool? Been a wargamer for over 20 years. Started with Panzer Blitz and graduated to the Europa series. Maybe this is why I'm more willing to use these sims for training. I'm still waiting for a sim with more of an "operational" flavor. I'm thinking a Division level sim using Company's as the maneuver units. This way we can implement more operational level stuff. I think TacOpsCav is a great start in getting officers and enlisted soldiers into wargames as a tool. Part of the problem is comparing a wargame to real life. For those of us who still have our boots on the ground its hard not to make that comparison. For example as a Rocket artilleryman I see things in TacOps that aren't exactly right , but that doesn't detract from its value as a training tool. With that being said I think there is a real need for the scenario/unit editors. In this way we can tweak the game to fit our needs. Another improvement would be in the map area. There needs to be more variation in terrain types as well as multiple levels of elevation. Right now there is no distinction between restrictive and unrestrictive terrain. It is mainly go or slow go. Makes it hard to do a MCOO when units can move freely through, what looks like restrictive terrain. I'm talking tracked vehicles moving through the woods. TacOps can only get better. A WW2 version would be great. Or what about a joint effort by ProSim, HPS , and MajorH? One can only speculate on the possibilities.

    TacOps 4.0

Sir, I believe the issue I saw was in SEP. Will start a separate wishlist thread. Thanks. SFC TJ
  7. That would be me. redleg7@bigfoot.com Scenario Size: Medium to Large Side: Blue or Red Mission Preference: Doesn't matter, attack, defend, or meeting engagement. Forces: Prefer Army, but willing to play Marines if I have to. Thanks. SFC Taijeron Ft. Bragg, NC

    TacOps 4.0

A while back there was an article in the Army Time's about a game being developed for the "general Population". This game was to be used as a training tool and be available to everyone. I'm wondering if the article was referring to TacOpsCav. One thing I'd like to see that shouldn't be to hard to code is a toolbar. Nothing fancy maybe the most common functions. What be great is if we could configure the toolbar like what you find in MS Office. Do you mind "wishlist" threads or user requests? Thanks. SFC TJ
  9. Sir, I'm running TacOpsCav with no problems. Is this board an appropriate place to look for PBEM opponents? If not can you please point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Sir, What new features can we expect to see in TacOps 4?
