  1. Is there a way to make everything in the game easy and automatic for me? Well, short of that, I'll just add that I enjoy the buddy aid feature, and when it doesn't adversely impact the mission, I'll take the time to have a scout team or the XO tend to the fallen. It's dependent on the situation, of course, but in general I think a commander that had a reputation for ignoring his seriously wounded because "we can't spare a trigger puller for that" would have as much to fear from his men as the enemy in combat.
  2. I am so pumped about getting the quad .50 M16 MGMC with the hypothetical flame thrower conversion...bring on the patch! Whaddaya mean, no?
  3. Just got spanked bad by a single German mortar firing blind at the start of a QB. I took thirty five casualties, mostly KIA/Incapacitated, when my WEGO ordered infantry got caught in the open by the mini barrage. The first couple rounds did about half the damage, and then the turn ended. I ordered everybody out of the area with FAST move orders, but right when the next turn started another round hit and the infantry squads went to ground and continued to take a pounding. I had another Company on top of the mid map objective by now, but my flanking force was, for all intents and useful purposes, toast. I decided to get some fast and satisfying 60mm revenge by having an FO team get to a spot where it could see...and the whole team is wiped out by a single round from a halftrack mouned 75mm gun from clear across the map. I'm now completely demoralized, much less my virtual battlegroup. I think for a moment on how I can salvage this mess, set up a hasty defense on the reverse slope and.... Nope. I decided that it jsut wasn't my battle and handed it to the AI via a ceasefire. If I was in charge of a real battle and it was only a meeting engagement, I'd take my dead and wounded and fall back, rather than see the other Company cut to pieces by a now superior German force, and since AFAIK there's no exiting, I couldn't see going through the motions of setting up a screen so the bulk of my forces could withdraw. The AI isn't the craftiest opponent, but every once in awhile even a blind AI squirrel finds a nut and drops enough HE on it to get a quick win. I was looking forward to what promised to be an interesting situation with my usual feel good victory over the AI in a meeting engagement, but I'm not mad at this "gamey tactic" that undid me before I got started. It was just my turn to be unlucky. Even when I get humbled, I admire the way this game rewards sound tactics but still has enough room for blind fate to have a say in what transpires. Anyway, am I right in thinking there is no way to leave a map once a QB starts?
  4. I had a soldier toting an M1919A4 enter a building I thought was clear in the demo, and as the Germans inside fled after a couple of shots from his squadmates, he pulled his .45 and shot one of the Germans who was running away through the window. I think that may have been the moment I decided I had to have this game.
  5. Thanks for this mod. I popped your 28th ID mod in the Z folder, and I'm able to buy the 2nd BN, 110th Rgt, "E" Co in the Quick Battle purchase menu. When I go to the 2nd Platoon, 2nd Squad and find the BAR gunner on the map, I'm able to tell the kids "Hey, that's your Grandfather". That's worth the price of the game right there.
  6. I'm currently running with: Vein's skies, expolosions and smoke, support chatter, terrain desaturation, flames, small arms muzzle flaches, tank muzzle flashes, and tracers. Wolfe reduced terrain shimmer, reduced road shimmer. Rambler's weapons skins. TWC icon mod Juju's tweaked UI Oddball's soundmod MKII Mords' immersive American voices Dietrich's German voices Bodkin's soundmodV2 Bil Hardenberger's hex shaped bases Ellisam's US helmet net Mark Saunder's US divisioinal patches My own intro, splash and battle end music, consisting of Band of Brothers theme, the old CMBO intro music, and Marlene Dietrich's "Lili Marlene". I'm pretty sure some are overriding others, but I'm happy with the results.
  7. Check out some of the sound mods. They are quite pingy.
  8. I vote for all of the above. The stock vehicles are pretty good and the terrain/sky/GUI mods have a more dramatic impact on the game, so they have rightfully gotten more attention. I'm waiting for some more esoteric mods. How about the one item that's featured in just about every war movie, and was certainly almost universally employed in WWII but isn't in CMBN...where's the cigarette mod?
  9. It's a good question, but I'm not sure I want to know what went on in "experienced" bunkers.
  10. It's asking a lot of the AI to treat the weapons like golf clubs...."Hmmm, I have to take a 480 yard shot, I'll grab that nice scoped '03A3 Springfield. When I move to the hedgerow I expect engagements to be at putting distance, so I'll swap it for that Thompson and a bag of mags..." Also, since we are thinking out loud about weapons scrounged from former owners, why are we assuming that they are in operable condition when found? If the late Pvt. Pixel was done in by a close artillery strike or machinegun fire while he was moving out at high port arms, his issue weapon may need some attention from the armorer before it's usable again.
  11. That is creepy. Extreme realism, however, could be creepier still.
  12. It's an interesting idea. It could also slow down units that were extremely low on ammo, making the out of ammo problem even rarer.
  13. Only gamers with LOS or a properly working comm link to the on or off map patching assets will be able to find the patch. You'll have the option to download the patch at emergency speed, but there's no guarantee that it will land in the same folder as your installed game. Patch reference points will allow you to get the patch faster and more accurately, even if you have no LOS to BFC or your computer, but you'll have to purchase them ahead of time.
  14. I had a blast playing this one the other day. Even with the changes mandated by the different features and weapons available in CMBN, the feel is very similar. Amazing how that virtual terrain is burned into the ol' memory banks. Well done and thank you very much!
  15. It'd be nice to have an indicator of how many total losses a unit has taken, even if it was just a number or tally marks on the GUI. Then one of the morbidly artistic modders could change it to dog tag icons.
  16. I'm liking the look, but I was surprised at how "subdued" the weapons graphics are compared to the original lime green silhouettes. It's growing on me rapidly, however. Nice work and much appreciated.
  17. I've thought that it would be fun to have a set of icons that were NATO based, so when I got a distant view the map would look like one of the SPI or AH game boards of my misspent youth.
  18. I just played out a quick battle where my glider infantry was confronted by two big AFVs. After some initial unpleasantness, I mortared the crap out of both of them with 60mm HE and managed to immobilize them both, a StuG III and a Panzer IV. Most of my bazooka guys were KIA trying to get within range, but some scrounging got me a usable tube and some rounds for it. Got behind the tank, zooked it and the crew bailed and were cut down in short order. I attacked the assault gun with a squad armed with grenades and at least one AT rifle grenade, seeing as it couldn't get to me. I couldn't kill the beast but the crew fled, and were killed after zapping one of my guys with a pistol shot. My newly minted tube guy then blasted it, using up his last round. I thought the scenario should end, but nope. Went looking and found a third vehicle, an assault gun that was still mobile camped in between some hedgerows. No amount of scrounging could get me more bazooka ammo, so I attacked it with hand grenades...all I had left. Nada. Lost a couple guys who were too slow to get out from in front of the thing, and decided to ask for a ceasefire. All in all, I felt good about how the game handled it. The tanks were bad news, but with the right weapons or when the beasts were stuck I could kill them, and when I was out of Schlitz at the end, It made more sense to call it a day then try to swarm a mobile AFV with with just small arms and hand grenades.
  19. Why, way back in the olden days we had Valley of Trouble for breakfast, lunch and dinner and we were damn glad to have it, too. Why, I remember walking uphill, both ways, through that map and stumbling over pixels that were so big that it took a month of Sundays just to get around them. We didn't have no fancy "call for fire" to help us out none, neither...there was none of that new fangled linear or point targeting, we just had these FO's that moved their heads back and forth like LEGO men and had binoculars that looked like two big fat Tootsie rolls duct taped together, and that was it. Oh, and them crazy engineers would shoot big, square gobs of fire at you, and everything burned, and those big blocky enemy soldiers had knives and clubs they would use on you...I tell you, it's all different nowadays, 'ceptin' mebbe the voices...anywho, that's how I met your mother. Looks very nice. Thanks for making it.
  20. Gamey tactics, just as BFC said. I can see why they are so reluctant to add enemy weapons scrounging, the steaks are too high...
  21. Well, now I want scrounging steaks from bullet sponged cows that give my pixeltruppen a morale and health bonus, but I guess we have to have flame in the game first....
