    The Stummel.  An under-rated vehicle in my opinion.  If only they carried a few more HEAT rounds, but I can see why they didn't - they're not meant to be tank destoyers, but I have one in Mit Karacho which is doing an admirable job.

    Totally.

    Had one sitting behind the corner of a barn kill 2 T-34/85's that went by showing their flanks in a PBEM earlier this week.

    The HEAT round is pretty effective.

  2. On defense, FT teams are all about good cover, a covered arc at optimum FT range, and staying hidden until it's time.

    On attack, you either have to have massive suppression or be able to move through or along buildings without taking fire and then torch buildings or bunkers rather than trying to get into LOS to barbeque troops.

    To give a rl example of an incident that happened early this year in a simulator exercise.

    a company of l2a6 is defending. the far left platoon starts getting targets at 3500m and engages. suddenly one tank turns its turret and puts five rounds into a tank of the center platoon only barely being stopped before also shooting the company commanders tank.

    The tc had seen a thermal signature and immediately brought the gun over without checking what he was looking at and the gunner didnt realize he was looking at a leo2 and fired even though he knew there were friendlies there, the tank was pointing and engaging in the wrong direction, only 1000m away and was in the open easily identifiable.

    If this happened to anyone in cm theyd riot yet it happened irl.

    So while cm has issues with the spotting model rl can be much weirder.

    Great example of why you can't get too bent over spotting oddities.

  4. Really nice prelude.

    I would never send armor forward without infantry working into recon position and spend a while spotting, but that's just me and the scenario parameters may not give you enough time to be as deliberate as I like to be.

    Looking forward to seeing what happens.

    PBEM takes up most of my game time, but I've used house rules similar to the Hard Cat rules in single player forever.

    Makes playing against the AI so much more enjoyable and immersive.

  5. From FM 7-20:

    2-7. COMMANDER'S INTENT

    The commander's intent drives mission tactics. It is the commander's stated vision, which defines the purpose of the operation and the end state with respect to the relationship among the force, the enemy, and the terrain. It should also include how this end state will support future operations. (Appendix A shows how the commander's intent is integrated into the OPORD.)

    a. The overall purpose of the mission is more important than the individual assigned tasks. Each subordinate commander must know why and how his assigned tasks relate to the overall concept of the operation. Then, if the situation changes and contact with higher headquarters is lost, the subordinate can use his initiative to achieve the desired end results.

    b. The battalion commander has a dual responsibility. He must understand the intent of the brigade and division commanders (two levels up) and must ensure his intent is understood at company and platoon levels (two levels down). The commander's intent paragraph in the OPORD should begin with the words, "My intent is..." so it can be understood and relayed to subordinates easily.

    c. A clear commander's intent enhances agility, timing, and initiative at all levels. It helps in shifting the main effort on a fluid battlefield.

    I've been retired now for about a year and a half and I'm absolutely loving it. But I can't play CM all day. There are too many other things I'm really interested in. For example (not in order):

    * I'm 66 and been a competitive runner since I was 18. Lymphoma took a bite out of that but I'm back at it again and feeling good. But at this age I'm much slower and need more rest after pushing myself.

    * My model railroad

    * Amateur radio

    * Reading

    * Piano

    * Guitar

    * Things my wife and I like to do together (she's retired and has her own interests too). This should really be higher up the list 😀

    * Other games (yes, there are others, haha)

    You guys wait until you retire. You'll see. I mean, still not having time for everything is a good problem because now "everything" is only stuff you WANT to do. The good news is I won't be bored in retirement!

    Dave

    My father is 90 now and some time after retirement, he once said something along the lines of "I'm so busy now that I never get anything done" (wish I could remember it exactly as it was much funnier).

    Had to chuckle when I read this.  My last 15 years at work was in a chemical plant automating the different processes.  Getting pumps, valves, scales, agitators to do what we wanted was the easy part.  The hard part was to figure out how the operators could screw it up.  😀

    So true and also sounds a lot like game design.

    You do all you can, test it all you can, but it takes releasing it to the masses to see what can be broken that you never even remotely considered.

  8. With an armor covered arc, the tank will typically ignore infantry and bailed crews unless they get very close to the tank and are perceived as a threat.

    The best reason to use an armor arc imho, is to keep your tanks from firing on bailed crews and then have other enemy tanks come into LOS and get the drop on you.
