  2. I've been play testing it as well. Fun idea with some nifty little battles. There was a lot of confusion on my part, however. Objectives and how to attain them, mainly. First attempt, I ended up in the woods near the tunnel with all of my men, only to find I could not get down the cliff to the exit zone. With no time left to return to the village and access to the railroad cut, the game was lost. (Some reference to the railroad cut not being accessible - in other words, you need to enter the cut closer to the town - would be helpful.) The bunkers were bizzare. Having discovered them, and seeing that they cover the way to the railroad tunnel, my men had to destroy them. But the bunkers would not die. Even with grenades, right next to them. The men never used their panzerfausts. So I decided to run in front of them anyways as time was ticking . . . only to discover they were empty. Huh? I managed to get the men out with 9 seconds left on the clock. It's a nifty map, and a fun premise. There are some frustrating factors, however. And re-playability is limited (as you know where the baddies are, 2nd time through). I'd recommend removing the bunkers, or having just one. And having it occupied by the enemy. I'd perhaps create some gully's or pathways down to the railroad bed, from the high forest. I would potentially clarify the objectives for the player who looks for guidance in the mission briefing. If you intentionally want to leave it "fog of war," then I would remove the reference in the briefing about eliminating the enemy from the village. Stress the importance of reaching the tunnel, over prolonged battle. It's a nice one. Second battle looks like a LOT of fun. Will report . . . Cheers! Gpig

  4. Hey there, Played it last night. It was a lot of fun, though not quite what I expected. ***SPOILER ALERT**** . . . . . It was a fun battle. Two platoons is just about right for my brain to handle. The force make-up was nice. Scout teams, Breach teams and MGs, plus a well balanced assortment of men/equipment. The map is nice, as well. A good mix of terrain and cover/concealment. Fun stuff. My only critiques would be: For some reason, a few of the houses on the map were not able to be entered. I've never seen that before. Any ideas? When your reinforcements arrive, there's not enough seats in the trucks/tracks to hold all the troopers. One of the trucks arrives already destroyed. It was billed as a search-and destroy, but pretty quickly just ended up as a toe-to-toe battle in the woods (the veritable Hornet's Nest). At first I thought I was going to be doing a lot of bounding overwatch, searching for a hidden enemy lurking somewhere on the map. That made me think that 45 minutes would not be enough time for the task. Soon, it was evident that it was just going to be a straight up exchange of lead, which was fine. I'd managed to get my men across the stream and into pretty good cover when we spotted the first camp of Germans. Their counter attack hit me pretty hard, costing me around 7 casualties. My reinforcements then came on the map and pretty much cleaned house (with the .50 cal's being a huge help). I would appreciate a version of this battle where the U.S. commanded just one platoon. The mission would not result in a huge hornet's nest being stirred up, but there would be Germans waiting in ambush somewhere in the woods. Perhaps some touch objectives for the fighting patrol. I'm not sure how well the A.I. would work in that case (ambush for the A.I. being difficult) . . . but I have fun imagining it. Overall I found it very enjoyable.   7. Great VAAR, Mr. Griswald. A real byte-turner. I loved the shot through the smoke and fire of Cameron giving the german halftrack bursts of .50 cal.

  9. I believe the fellow who recently released the CMBN versions of Chance Encounter, and Valley of Trouble, is currently working on the Saving Private Ryan battle. (I love that Eagle has Landed, scenario) Other than that, I'm not aware of any more Gpig
  10. I seem to recall that Cannister rounds did not make it into CM until CMBB. Hated being on the receiving end of that stuff. The game at that point did not allow for cover with regards to Cannister. Your men were just as likely to be cut down when in a heavy church, as out in the open. Someone on the boards here called it a "swarm of angry bees." I'm looking forward to how it's modelled in the future.
  11. Just want to thank StoneAge for creating a great little battle based on the movie The Eagle has Landed (starring Michael Caine and Treat Williams). Perfect map, just like the movie. It's got the Pub, the Mill, the gas station and of course the church and steeple. All the details are spot on. ***Spoiler Alert*** - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ***Spoiler Alert*** Steiner and his troops are a nasty bunch, just like in the movie. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out once you replace the Grenadiers with Polish Airborne. (Come on Commonwealth module!) Some suggestions? - Make Cpt. Clark a Vet, and give him a +2 rating? - Remove SMOKE grenades from the U.S. side? - Remove radios from stranded 1st plt.? (I used them to call in mortar strikes. Kind of cheating - based on the movie.) - Remove rifle grenades from both sides? It would be nice if there was a half-track with a gun-shield (as per the movie). My half track was too brittle to participate in the battle very effectively. Even at over 200m away from the Church. Maybe it could be a "touch" longer? But I have to say, I had a blast with it as is. My first battle was a tactical defeat (though I killed Steiner). I had a squad in the graveyard, slugging it out with some final few defenders in the church. Fun stuff! It would be nice if you did a version of this battle where you are the Germans and get to ambush 1st platoon as they come screaming into the village. What do you think? Thanks again! Gpig

  13. Thanks all, for fleshing out some great details. I've read Eisenhower's biography of WWII, and that was pretty amazing. But it was written fairly shortly after the war so a lot of details were left out. (No mention of ULTRA at all, for example.) Currently, I'm waiting for the third book in Rick Atkinson's amazing WWII histories. "An Army at Dawn, and "Day of Battle," are full and detailed. (The first details operation Torch, the second Sicily/Italy.) Great stories from the trenches on up to supreme allied commanders and presidents/prime ministers. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a full and entertaining read on those histories. Cheers, Gpig
  14. I was wondering how the particular divisions were chosen for the invasion of Normandy. (Not including the Airborne and Ranger units, etc. I understand whey those units were chosen.) There must have been a lot of self-promotion and campaigning by the various unit commanders to have their divisions picked for the task. And if I was Supreme Commander, I'd want units with some experience and sound training to tackle to objectives. I don't recall reading much about this aspect of the Overlord/Normandy planning. Anyone know much about it? Curious about the U.S. units, and the Commonwealth units too. Infantry and Armour. Canadian, British etc.. I can guess why a FRENCH unit was chosen. But why specifically the U.S. 29th and 4th divisions. Or the Brit Northumbrian, or Canadian 3rd division? Was it just that they were in England, and had the time to train for the specific tasks/objectives of Overlord? Were the infantry divisions considered "cannon-fodder" divisions? Or were they picked because of a perceived quality or effectiveness? Cheers, Gpig

  16. Love you're ideas, Vinnart. Unless I'm confused, it seems that you've listed CRACK at a higher level than ELITE. I believe ELITE should hold the top spot (as it does in the game), and should have the GREEN color, not yellow/green. Cheers, Gpig
