  1. I just installed the 27.42 drivers as well, it corrected the problem for me. Thanks for the info, everyone.
  2. I've got an Athlon 700 system with a KX-133 chipset and a Hercules GeForce card. For the longest time, I'd lock up in CM with Detonator drivers later than 5.33 installed... After installing the 1.1 patch, it looks like my problems might have been solved! Has anyone else had good luck with the new patch and a similar setup?
  3. Heh, great joke..! It reminded me of this one: Brezhnev wished to commission a portrait to be entitled "Lenin in Poland" in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the Russian Revolution. The problem was that Russian painters, being schooled strictly in the realist school of thought, were unable to paint an event which never occurred. "Comrade Brezhnev, we would like to do it, but we cannot. It goes against our training," was the reply which the Chairman received from every artist he asked. Finally, after getting refusals from all of the great artists in Moscow, Brezhnev was forced to go ask the old Jewish painter, Levy. "Of course, I prefer to portray actual events, but I'll do the painting for you, Comrade. It would be my great honor." Levy commenced work on the painting. However, every time that Brezhnev visited his studio in an attempt to see the work in progress, Levy rebuffed his efforts, telling him that he never allowed his unfinished works to be viewed. Finally, the day of the unveiling arrived. Levy stood proudly by the cloth draped over his work. Brezhnev introduced Levy and gestured to his gift to the Russian people on the fiftieth anniversary of the Russian Revolution, a picture commemorating Lenin's historic visit to Poland. Everyone gasped as the cloth was removed to reveal a picture of a man and a woman together in bed. Brezhnev was stunned. "Whoa, who is that man?" he stammered. "Why, that's Trotsky." "And who," Brezhnev inquired, "is that woman?" "That is Lenin's wife, Comrade Brezhnev." "But where is Lenin?" "He's in Poland."
  4. #19 - When at the mall with friends, you try to convince them to move in a bounding overwatch configuration. #20 - Before you go anywhere, you always shout, "Alright, listen up!" #21 - When someone offers to drive you someplace, you clamber up onto the back of their car and get down on one knee.
  5. Spoiler info included.. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- With a little bit of luck, this scenario is easy to beat with the Germans. On the very first turn, have Wittman button his tank and head down the road towards the town at full speed, switching to hunt right before the next intersection you come to. I find that this usually throws all the light armor on the road into total chaos, giving you the opportunity to pick them off while they're reversing and turning and driving all over the place trying to get out of your line of fire. Once, I even managed to nail a Sherman way over by the town very early on. Mill around by the road for a few turns, allowing Wittman to blast away at whatever strikes his fancy, and taking care not to let any infantry get too close. If anyone starts bouncing shells off of you, it's time to back down the road. At this point you can pretty much go wherever you want, I swung around to the left and killed a few more halftracks and terrorized more soldiers. As soon as your reinforcements show up, your PzIV will get nailed, which is annoying. I usually use my infantry to secure the closest clump of woods before moving more tanks up to hunt, and I let Wittman roam free, making a nuisance of himself and covering the advance of the other tanks. If you can get him into the city, you'll find you can usually sneak up on the tanks that will be defending the street that the victory marker's on. some points: -If you're being targeted by more than one tank, you're advancing too quickly. Slow down, control the pace of the battle. -There isn't too much infantry from what I can tell, but they'll cause problems if you don't control your original position. Make sure you sweep it before reinforcements arrive. Good luck!
  6. ...It stopped doing it for a month, and then started again, pzvg..? That's weeiiirrdd..! Perhaps you're running hot, have you checked to see what the temp of your processor and ambient case temp are? Maybe it's time for some extra heatsinks or something... I added a CardCooler for my video card and cut a hole in the side of my case right where it sits, and it dropped the processor and case temp by about ten degrees farenheit.
  7. I don't play sims exclusively, so I'm partial to my GeForce card... It's a great performer for both 2d and 3d apps... I haven't really liked 3dfx since their Voodoo 1, since every one of their products since is pretty much based on the exact same chipset. If you're going to buy now, buy something from nVidia. It's anyone's guess when 3dfx's next-generation product is coming out. As far as CD-ROM drives, I'd go with a DVD drive. They're pretty much exactly the same as a CD-ROM drive, and if you ever need to read a DVD, you've got that option. I've got a spiffy slot-loading one, and I really like it. As far as sound, I think the only sound cards I've ever owned have been Creative Labs. I think I'd definitely go with the SBLive Value over the SB64, simply because the Live cards use the EMU-10K1 chipset, which offers a great performance boost. I've got the SBLive Platinum, which I bought mainly for the spiffy Live Drive thingy.. It's nice to be able to plug headphones into the front of the case. I'm pretty sure all the Live cards perform about the same, though, even if CL does claim there are differences.
  8. Hmm.. Somehow, I think one of the keys to winning friends and influencing people is not flaming the moderator when he's trying to help you.
  9. Just a thought, you also might want to make sure you don't have a whole lot of extra stuff running in the background, you never know what apps might cause problems with CM. When you first boot up, hit CTRL ALT DELETE to bring up the Task Manager... If you have a big laundry list of programs in there, you might want to try ending task on most of them. Try to end task on everything except for Explorer and Systray and see if that makes a difference.
  10. HawkerT, Actually, I should have probably mentioned that, like Madmatt, I'm still running on Win98SE, so I might not be much help to you... I'm still hoping to unlock the mysteries of the various incompatibilities and problems surrounding our notoriously unstable KX133 chipset. I had a brief thought last night, that most of the games I lock up in are running in D3D mode... I run nice and stable in Counterstrike when I'm in OpenGL mode, so I wonder if that has anything to do with it. CM uses OpenGL, right?
  11. Hi Cyrano, It's funny you should ask me that, I was planning to post an update when I got home from work today. Unfortunately, it seems that the newer drivers have not completely resolved my lockup problems. I didn't have a whole lot of time to delve into the issue, but I have noted, very unofficially, that the lockups seem to occur on medium and larger-sized maps. I played all the way through the Wiltz scenario (small map) with no problems and figured I was fine, but later on, I started one of the scenarios (I can't remember the name, but it dealt with fighting among the hedgerows and the description recounted a German tank ace stalling an Allied advance). I locked on the third or fourth turn, during the planning phase. I will experiment further tonight to see if I can determine what's causing the problem, but I'll most likely have to step back down to the 5.22 drivers. Oh well. Lastly, I would certainly be interested in a PBEM with you, and as I have not played against any live opponents before, I really haven't developed a preference for one side or the other. Send mail to my Jinkeez@hotmail.com account and I'll give you my primary email addy. I'm looking forward to hearing from you!
  12. I installed the drivers this evening, and they seem to work just fine... It's the first set of the Detonator 3 drivers that don't hang the game on me. Woohoo! I'm running: Athlon 700 on Epox 7KXA (KX133 chipset) Hercules/Guillemot GeForce DDR
  13. I imagine the advantages will be (1) convenience, as you won't have to worry about file swapping, (2) speed, since you won't have to send them via email, and (3) the ability to chat with your opponent (if a chat interface is implemented). I can see where this would enhance multiplay.
  14. I just had infantry do this for the first time yesterday..! I snuck a whole platoon through the woods to where a German 105mm SP Gun was hiding. I had a bazooka team with one shell left, and they immobilized it from the woods, then everyone attacked it until it was abandoned. It took 2 or 3 turns, but it was cool to watch. Even cooler was when one of my Shermans managed to sneak up right behind a German halftrack that was busy firing into the woods along a road... My tank drove right up to it and they didn't notice until the first shell went right through 'em. They freaked, threw their rig into reverse and tried to get away, but the next shell brewed 'em up good. The replay was great, I think you could pinpoint the exact moment the halftrack's crew all wet their pants.
