  1. Try this book: Hit Hard. I don't know the author (I'm coming back from the UK and my stuff hasn't got here yet, I'm with the USAF). Anyways, it's an autobiograhy of a Platoon Leader from a Black armored battalion in europe in WWII. Really good reading if you can find an old paper back copy of it. I also have to add my thumbs up for Crisp's Brazen Chariots. A classic! -Ski
  2. You only live once, so go do it. There are a lot of people that would give anything for such a chance. Go and make sure you have the presence of mind to absorb the occasion. It's a once in a lifetime chance... -Ski
  3. The BIG problem what that I never had anybody to play Squad Leader with me. I did play this kid in high school in study hall for a while! That's right, my teacher allowed us to play as long as we were quiet and rolled the dice on a back pack. Other than that, I got tired of staring at the board and attempting solitare... I went on to buy a lot of the ASL stuff, just to see that it was a money making gimmick. The original SL had one hell of a TO&E going for it. I hated ASL for sucking up my money while leaving me a limited variety of weapons. I really got dis-enfranchised when what was supposed to be "no new rules, just better organized" turned out to be a rediculous addition of unessesary rules. Instead of adding onto the awesome "bypass" , they added "residual firepower" that caused more counters to be on the board and really cramped playability. WHy not just stick to the oversized hexes instead introduced by the deluxe boards???? I promptly sold my entire SL/ASL collection (including my treasured counter box made from a large hardware bin you know, the blue ones with clear drawers) for $100 in 1991. I did buy the 4 original SL games when I found out that AH was going out. I'm not that heartless ya know. CM finally answered my prayers once and for all... -SKi ------------------ "The Lieutenant brought his map out and the old woman pointed to the coastal town of Ravenoville........" 6. [Having being passed out on Bud Lite for what seems to be an eternity, Teamski groggily crawls out from under one of the Shermans] "Whoa, what happened? Who are you guys? Did we win? How did I get this piece of shrapnel in my back, did one of you guys walk in the mine field again? This is the last time I drink a case of bud without eating first! Man, do I have a headach." [He stumbles into Stuka, appologizes and sits down near an AVRE he never noticed before. Bumping his head on the side of the hull, he slowly passes out mumbling something about "getting the tanks up on the hill" ......... ------------------ "The Lieutenant brought his map out and the old woman pointed to the coastal town of Ravenoville........"
  7. May the finishing touches on CM1 herald to beginning of a long friendship and to your continued success!!! Thanks BTS for one HELL of a good game. Cheers, mates! -Ski ------------------ "The Lieutenant brought his map out and the old woman pointed to the coastal town of Ravenoville........"
  8. Just hit the escape key to minimize the game and have your map running in the backround. It's a pretty quick way to switch back and forth this way. Good luck, and let me know how it went. -Ski ------------------ "The Lieutenant brought his map out and the old woman pointed to the coastal town of Ravenoville........" 9. Sorry bud, I had to re-do the entire St. Nazaire map because I loaded it as an op instead of a battle. What I did do, was take a screen shot of the editor map ("print screen" key, paste into paint program), the one with the tiles. I then just went back and forth between the editor and the screenshot for reference. I was able to recreate the map pretty quickly (after punting the cat, of course). You could, if you want to empty your color tank in your printer, print out the screen shot and not have to switch. It's not as bad as you think ............ -Ski ------------------ "The Lieutenant brought his map out and the old woman pointed to the coastal town of Ravenoville........"

  11. I think it's great for both WWII magazine and BTS. To have an advert like CM in the magazine could help to attract a younger audience to the mag. My impression of magazines like WWII or Military history, is that they seem to go for the, excuse my term, geritol generation. It used to turn me off reading the mag seeing ads for $15 polyester slacks or shoes that my grandfather would wear. An ad like CM is just the thing to get younger people learning about history, thinking that "cool, I can play history, not just have to read about it". I think it's a win/win situation...... -Ski ------------------ "The Lieutenant brought his map out and the old woman pointed to the coastal town of Ravenoville........"
  12. Finally, a yearly award! It's about time. I'm tired of seeing crapier games getting yearly awards just because they were sold on shelves........ Congrats BTS! -Ski ------------------ "The Lieutenant brought his map out and the old woman pointed to the coastal town of Ravenoville........"
  13. Oh well. I still think that......... -Ski ------------------ "The Lieutenant brought his map out and the old woman pointed to the coastal town of Ravenoville........"
  14. I can see why the M-16 wasn't included. My US halftracks armed with single .50s are already causing widespread panic amongst the German infantry. Imagine having a quad!! I feel it was a game balance issue. The only thing that erks me a bit was, and this has been trampled repeatedly before, the inclusion of the Ostwind and Puma. I'm sure some other far more common vehicles could of been included. Maybe the MkIII for earlier Italian battles or something. -Ski ------------------ "The Lieutenant brought his map out and the old woman pointed to the coastal town of Ravenoville........"
  15. Easy: Just draw 2 lines on a piece of paper 94mm apart. Then, draw a line 40 degrees angle across both lines. Measure length of the line between the two lines, and, wahla! You have the actual armor thickness. Do this a couple times with different thicknesses/ angles and you will have a good idea how to guestimate armor thickness. -Ski ------------------ "The Lieutenant brought his map out and the old woman pointed to the coastal town of Ravenoville........"
  16. After visiting THE HMS Victory a couple years ago, I'm definately interested in AOS2. I tried the first one, but it did fail to convince me that it was a good game.... I'll probably break down and get AOS2, it just looks too damn good! -Ski ------------------ "The Lieutenant brought his map out and the old woman pointed to the coastal town of Ravenoville........"
  17. I think that Microprose's Task Force 1942 was one of the best naval games ever put out. Unlike the flawed algrithms of Fighting Steel, it used a full 3D model for gunnery. It was way more believable than FS. In FS, if the shot didn't calculate a "straddle" or "direct hit", it just diappeared, no splashes, nothing. I wish SSI had taken hints from Microprose. The game has no built in campaign that TF1942 had. It was basicly an incomplete game. I also wish that there would be a sequel to TF1942, but with the luke warm reception that FS got, I doubt it. TF1942 did it ALL right! -Ski ------------------ "The Lieutenant brought his map out and the old woman pointed to the coastal town of Ravenoville........"
  18. I wish I didn't sell my Ace of Aces sets. I even had a set that featured an anti-aircraft gun defending a balloon against an allied plane. Interesting stuff...... I spent hours playing B-17 Queen of the Skys. It was that game that caused me to get "Patton's Best" and "Raid on St Nazaire" solitare wargames. Never could find an opponent, so I sold my whole collection of games about 8 years ago..... -Ski ps: Now I get to spend some big $$$ to get 'em back, hehehe......... ------------------ "The Lieutenant brought his map out and the old woman pointed to the coastal town of Ravenoville........" 19. Yeah I already spoke, but I wanted to bring up a couple other games: "Up Front" by AH - 1986 Anybody play this Squad Leader card game? Nice artwork, but it was way too abstract for me "Air Force" by AH -1982 Used to play this WWII plane-to-plane along with SL for HOURS while I was in CAP eons ago. Great game that used charts for aircraft data. Had Dauntless, the gamette as well I think one of the best designed games out was "Ace of Aces". Anbody remember this book based game? Each player had a picture book. With the viewpoint out of your airplane, you read off a page number corresponding wih a maneuver listed at the bottom of the page. Great game that was. The only problem was that if you played it too much, you ended up knowing each maneuver by it's page number, So, when your opponent read his out, you knew exactly which one he did, and promptly shot him down.... By the way, I still have those "flat" army men to this day with the box!! I would scan them if they were here with me, but they are at my parent's house (I'm stationed here in the UK with the USAF) Boy was I one VERY sad kid when I got them..... Thanks for listening, hehe -Ski " ------------------ "The Lieutenant brought his map out and the old woman pointed to the coastal town of Ravenoville........"
  20. Board Game: "Wood's Edge" by the Helen of Troy Game Company. It was one of those armymen games from the back of DC comic books. It was a really well thought out game. This was when I was 8. Anybody ever play it? They also advertised "Task Force".....hehehe PC: The venerable "Panzer Strike" by SSI on the C64 (or Amiga, I can't remember). It had to be one of the very first squad level WWII wargames..... Ahhh, the memories!! -Ski ------------------ "The Lieutenant brought his map out and the old woman pointed to the coastal town of Ravenoville........"
  21. Talk about a beer and pretzels game! Me and my dad used to play it a lot when I was a kid. My mom bought it for $.50 at Goodwill. And, yes it was complete!!!!! What a game......... -Ski ------------------ "The Lieutenant brought his map out and the old woman pointed to the coastal town of Ravenoville........"
  22. Bump! Hey guys: I think you should take a look at these!! It's not often that you get to look at original documents. These are really relevent to CM. Take a peak! Jasper: Great site! Thanks for the info. I'm printing them out right now.......... -Ski ------------------ "The Lieutenant brought his map out and the old woman pointed to the coastal town of Ravenoville........"
  23. FSAA does slow down the frame rate with the G2 card. But,it does make the game look 101% better! I won't play it without FSAA enabled....... -Ski ------------------ "The Lieutenant brought his map out and the old woman pointed to the coastal town of Ravenoville........"
  24. Outstanding BTS! Cudos to the team............ -Ski ------------------ "The Lieutenant brought his map out and the old woman pointed to the coastal town of Ravenoville........"
