  1. While waiting for a pbem turn I started a QB vs AI. Used s o p of officer spotter viewing from the upper front window of a building for a mortar located in the back yard. Friendly Hetzer is in the driveway. Enemy armor appears, TD and Priest. Both engage Hetzer. Errant shot from either Priest or TD hits the front of the building. No effect on officer spotter or hidden MG in guest bedroom. Mortar in back yard gets Kayoed, crew ok but crawls under picnic table. Should I have closed the blinds? "What the hell happened?" ... Jake, from 'Sand Pebbles' Surprised Toad
  2. Just keep fighting, it will happen sooner or later. These guys will raise their hands and sometimes head in your direction though they are enemy soldiers you will be able to control them to a certain extent. Not a big deal ..... Toad
  3. Gentlemen, We cannot afford to have a cat wire gap ! Toad
  4. Well that was odd. Just as I posted agreement with Herr Kruger, the Commisar got in his post. So who do I agree with? Well generally HK except if you are really close as the Commisar says. Weren't units as a whole identified as "veteran" or "green" and this would be more appropriate. 'Ok men, we are up against the __________ a veteran unit'. But not modeled in CM. Toad
  5. Does anyone know how many turns it takes infantry to get through barbed wire and does "Running" or troop quality make it go faster? Hung up Toad
  6. I still maintain that using Franko's True Combat Rules gives the AI a great advantage (or as Franko might say takes the !&%*# cheating advantage away from the human player). Broken record .... Toad
  7. Dear MadMatt, Are the great destroyed building pics and rubble you made going to be the result of player shots fired at buildings? So we won't use the * ** boom system anymore? Or are the buildings going to be on the map in the rubbled state at the beginning of a game? Construction Destruction .. Toad
  8. I wonder if only a Tiger can push a Tiger? Sledding Toad
  9. Caesar, IIRC running = no shooting. But have some overwatch, covering fire, to keep enemy heads down. With regard to the rukus of earlier posts: What sort of carpenter blames his tools? What sort of teacher blames his students? Platitudinal Toad
  10. I don't like the idea of a minimum amount of time being automatically assessed to buttoning up. It will make things too predictable. Uncertainty is the mother of indecision. Just made that up... Toad
  11. Just a note that Louie the Toad and Toad are not the same person. My pbem opponent and I often play as team members vs the AI. Using Franko's rules can make it quite interesting, and difficult.
  12. I went to the CMHQ and checked out the 3rd party mods. Couldnt find "Field and Stream" that way. Had to go back to this thread and us the link. Whats up with that? Confused Toad
  13. The latest addendum to Franko's Rules is to only move your units, never direct their fire. Let the AI take care of the firing. I tried it once for half of a small unit game. I could not help but place fire after awhile because my guys were running out of ammo. Maybe a better way would be to only direct the fire of those in command control. This was infantry only. Has anyone else tried this?
  14. Bamse, I am excited !!!! Your attempt has been anticpated by many as the solution to these questions: Why are we fighting HERE? Why is that hill important but not the bridge? I maight as well fight to the last man. Right? Withdraw? Why should I ? Etc, etc, etc. I suggest you keep the CMSL (Strategic Level) very, very simple. I think you should stay clear of anything to do with the production of units, possibly even the supply of units (although fighting for supply areas can get nastily exciting). Someone above was writing about distance and time scale and the ability to get reinforcements into a battle, this is very important. I think many players want to have: Meeting engagements that lead to something else, either advances or retreats or assaults. Probes that actually are useful in discovering the enemy. The ability to run away to fight another day in another place. The ability to have interdiction battles where your squadron of whatever is attacking an enemy rear position or a supply column. And other stuff that will be mentioned in this thread by other Forum members. I would say that most if not all players want the CMSL events to be decided by the tactical battles in CMBO and CMBB and so forth. This is going to be very difficult when you also consider air power. Coming from a board gamer background there are probably several out there that can be researched that may help keep you from reinventing the wheel. My own suggestion would be to look at the workings of Blitzkrieg by Avalon Hill. Now out of print. I am sure there are some others (probably more suitable) that members of the Forum can suggest. It is just that keeping it very simple will help to keep CMSL from becoming the game itself. If I had the time and the funds to work on this, well, I would be talking to you about doing the computer programming part. My last urging is to try 'thinking out of the box, or out of the hexagon', as the case may be. My toes are crossed... Louie the Toad
  15. This works for me when under air attack: Raise clenched fist to sky and shake in direction of enemy. Swear. Ducking Toad
  16. I watch BBC comedies and can understand most of the variants of the Queen's English. Of course then there is East Enders. Blimey.. Toad
  17. Yes, said before and now again: The Early Years will be the best experience, because of the combinations of units possible. Because of the variety of units. Because of the experimentation that was going on in tactics, unit composition, armor and armaments. Some of the matchups will be ... well ... curiously refreshing, odd and unpredictable. Lets hear it for motorcycles and cavalry. Toad. (I know they can't do horses)
  18. I guess this is really 2 questions: 1) Can existing mods be fixed so they can be used with CMMOS? If so, is anyone doing it? 2) Why would a modder not make his handiwork compatible with CMMOS ? Just want to know.......... Toad
  19. I was born in '47 and ever since I can remember we had 50 cal. mg slugs and casings (w/o the powder) around the house. Maybe 3 or 4 of them. We used to play with them. Also a GI issue canteen with belt and case. My dad served in WWII as an MP in DC. So he was not in the fighting. The story goes that he was directing traffic one day and was chewing gum on duty. A general's car pulled up next to him and a voice from inside barked out "get rid of that gum, soldier!". It was Omar Bradley. Wrigley Toad
  20. I only have two words to say: Blast Radius Handgrenades and Horseshoes Toad
  21. I wonder who actually was shooting at them? !! Friendly Fire Toad
  22. To extend what Moriarty is saying: When you have a 105 Arty Spotter it could be spotting for towed guns or for the Priest 105. It is just that these units will not be on the map. A Priest on the map would have to fire directly, over open sights, because of the close ranges of CM battles. Sad but True, Toad
