1. The truth is that, during the looting of Paris, it became traditional for Marder III crews to steal several of these as a sort of hood ornament for their vehicles.
2. Stinger missiles are anti-aircraft and would probably be all but useless against tanks. Unless you could shoot down the MiG overhead and call for an Apache... The LAW is about equivalent to a schreck and most U.S. soldiers carry one into battle. The Javelin missile is a very nice weapon and I would guess that squads would be supplied with them like CM squads are supplied with 'fausts.
3. Surely can't compare to the one I saw a while ago with a 12-gauge (that's a hard word to spell) main gun and a .22 coax...
4. Murphy's Law, paraphrased a little less abstractly: If there are two or more ways to do something, and one leads to catastrophe, someone will do it that way.
5. Things like spotter grade affect the time that goes on the clock. When the targeting is done out of LOS and without a TRP, the clock counts down at 30 sec per turn.
6. Why do we get the silly Englandish spelling of alphabetize, recognize and surprise, but the nice English spelling of defense?
7. I thought I would bump this one to contrast expectations and reality.
8. I tested 14" and 8" guns against a dug-in Sturmgruppe company spanning a hundred meters. The first 14" shell landed about 30m off target, thus 80m away from some units, and killed every man in the company. Not the first volley, the first shell. The first 8" shell was about 10m off target (these missions were fired with TRPs). It wiped out all but about 8 men, and the second shell finished the job. And these guys were in foxholes.
9. Is the color-disorder gene carried on the X or Y chromosome? In other words, do you find that half of one percent of women have a color disorder, or no women at all?
10. You are a disgrace. "the latter one" is acceptable, if you're determined to use that word, but either "the one you raise second/last" or "the second/last one" would be far superior.
11. The LOS tool traces a straight line, it doesn't follow ground contours. So with the slight change of angle between the brush patch and what's behind it, the line intersected blocking terrain closer to your Sherman.
12. Flipper, if you're serious, let's play a PBEM. I'll take infantry; you take armor. We'll see what happens.
13. Chuckles makes his triumphant return, and wonders if anyone misses him. Additionally, he wonders if 300-odd posts that probably don't mention him would be worth reading.
14. I thought I just noticed last night that the Brit 3" is "very slow". Carrying that stuff "very slowly" is not unfathomable. Related, how does the 2" mortar perform? Don't think I've ever seen it in action.
15. Is this a joke? I wonder how an M8 could have rolled through 256 infantry without encountering a single schreck. Mayhap it was the German commander who erred, not the designer of the game. A perfectly nice frontal attack without infantry on the flanks is doomed.
16. I was gratified to find an unexpected gift in my mail - a surrender from Mr. Hankey. This brings my vs. human winning percentage to 1.000, more than even Fionn can say. That's 1-0, if you couldn't guess. About to become 1-1, I fear, unless an earthquake forces me and jd into a draw. I must confess that I showcased the depths of my potential for stupidity in that game... but that 82-18 major victory makes a dozen losses worth my while. Errr, not quite. Makes one loss worth my while, at least. I expect to crush Jarhead in short order, too. Then I can afford a second loss and still keep my self-esteem up.
17. My conscience - something unique in this godforsaken place - screams at me for continuing this slaughter of Jarhead. I must say that things do look grossly unbalanced here. But he may surprise me yet. He may have four 14" batteries at his command. On a related note, I am hereby turning in a wisely considered report of suicidal, foolish, nearly-the-g-word tactics by my no-longer-very-esteemed opponent. I count three unoccupied jeeps Fast-moving their merry way up my roads. In this case it's probably nothing to worry about, but in other circumstances I might have been rather severely unhappy. But it's all good, because half of his armored division (slight exaggeration) is burning or, at the very least, smoldering intensely. A good trade for a handful of front-line defenses. Lookie here, a turn from my good buddy Mr. Hankey just came in.
18. Has anybody made or planned to make a comprehensive list of the best ways to use each unit in CM? I would do it myself, but I'm afraid that I'm not experienced enough. If nothing like this exists, and there would be demand for it, then maybe a collaborative effort could get a quality project done in a short time. TOPIC 2: I thought of this because I was wondering if anyone uses the M1917 HMG. I never buy it because I don't see any point in not spending the few extra points for a .50.
19. My two matches with Cesspoolers are going badly. JD wrecked a Bofors and a 60mm and panicked a spotter with about ten rounds of 81mm, then blasted one M3A1 with his 234/1 and killed the other with a 'faust or some fool thing. He continues to tear up my infantry with what I assume are SMG squads. My last chance is to get my spotter under control and try a "martyr strike" that will hopefully hurt his guys a little bit more than my own. I'm not doing too great in my match against Jarhead either. That's because he hasn't even sent me the first turn movie yet. I think he may still be uploading it; I took an informal count and discovered that Croda gave me, the defender, around 3000 points. I think my worthy opponent must be in excess of 5000, at least. My games with non-poolers are looking up. Mr. Hankey hasn't returned a turn in two days, but that battle is all but a done deal. Bates has cleverly left a 234/1 in plain sight of my tanks and I do intend to blow it away next turn. P.S. Forgot about Mace. Turn on the way, my man.
20. I shall defend BTS on this one. As to the RR-in-building thing, that is an unintended use of any towed weapon. It was included as a convenience to scenario designers, but it is not a major part of real tactics or the game. Squad locations are mildly abstracted. You can assume that twelve men are scattered over a twenty-meter area or so. They would have the common sense to stay away from the rear end of a RR.
21.
quote:
Originally posted by Jarhead: I might say, a blind monkey with nothing but one leg and a sling shot could not miss a shot in this fishbowl of death...

Hurry up and process this one. I want to see how many shots my "slingshots" score on.
22.
quote:
Originally posted by Croda: 6Cheeks, I assume it was my setup that you forwarded to JarJarHead. In that case, I certainly want to hear vivid descriptions of the battle, and if you are so inclined, feel free to send me the movies so that I can berate you both for your stupidity.

It was most certainly not your setup. It MY setup, derived from YOUR scenario. Will you kindly clarify the mechanics of sending someone movies? Is this simply sending the files that contain an action phase and no orders phase? I shall indeed send you vivid and periodic descriptions of the battle, and perhaps Jarhead (how do you make a good insulting nickname out of an already-insulting nickname?) will follow suit. Perhaps Madmatt could post the descriptions alongside those of Fionn's game, sort of a parallel theme, "watch a tactical genius on defense shred an inept attacker". P.S. I must tell you that I nearly fell out of my chair when I saw that Crodaburg lies on the road to the Seanachai River. [This message has been edited by Check6 (edited 01-21-2001).]
23. JarOfPickles wants to sully the beauty of this battle by playing it via IP. I told him, forget about it. He must hope that he can make me do something stupid under time pressure and thereby eke out, perhaps, a draw. Surely that's his only chance, and I have denied it. (soup nazi)NoIPfahyoo! Come back... NEVAH!(/soup nazi) [This message has been edited by Check6 (edited 01-21-2001).]
24. I have sent my setup. Perhaps it would be amusing to the 'Poolers if we were to email our updates and musings to someone who would post them in a discussion that Jarhead and I wouldn't read?
