  1. Schrullenhaft, thanks for helping me nail down my lock up problem. Turns out that the problem is somewhere in either Nvidia cards or my AGP bus. So I took back the Nvidia card and got a Voodoo 5500 PCI and now everything runs great. I played CM for two and half hours yesterday with no problems and I played my other crash prone games for seven hours straight (I love days off). Not once did I have any problems (while the Nvidia card would lock up after 30 minutes). The 5500 also gives higher frame rates than the Geforce2 on my system, also. Thanks for putting on the right track for solving this problem .
  2. I've read a lot of stuff here about how MS Plus! likes to screw up CM (and games in general). Yesterday I noticed I had a directory called "Plus!" So I figured I'd look for two components of Plus! that I know about-Themes and Custom Cursers. I found, and removed them. Now, since there isn't an option in Add/Remove programs for Plus!, what are the other components of Plus! that I need to remove? Also, just what exactly is Active Desktop? Does suck up RAM and/or screw up CM? How do I remove it? Thanks ------------------ As the bumper sticker says: "I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it!"
  3. BTS, While, I'm not a programmer (at least not yet), I'm pretty certain that part of the problem might be with how CM handles AGP (it seems that all of the graphics problems-texture corruption on Voodoo cards and lockups on Nvidia cards-happen on AGP systems). I'm pretty sure thats why my TNT2 and (occasionally) my Geforce are locking up. (Personally, I think storing graphics info on system memory is a bad idea. Another strike against Intel). Anyway, this is just a thought. Now back to turning the Eagle's Nest into a large hole in the ground. ------------------ As the bumper sticker says: "I don't suffer from insanity. 5. First, make sure your using either the 5.33 or 6.18 drivers for your card. You can find this under your advanced display properties. Then check to make sure Fog Emulation Table is on. If its not things will get screwed up. Hope this helps
  6. Do you mean the 'Halt' command at the top of list of unit orders?
  7. I tried the my Inf idea, and it didn't do anything (windows just booted up normally). Everything in the Inf/Other folder is only stuff thats on my system, and I have no idea what most of the stuff in the Inf folder itself is. The recovery CD has no option to install just plain windows. Also, powerstrip says the 62 MBs of Ram alone are going to DirectX. I've also noticed that some programs aren't getting higher frame rates with the new card. GT's tech support is the standard 'yadda yadda' blame it on the graphics card company site. Also, D3D was an after though for the Unreal engine, so I might try a Glide Wrapper. So far, no new crashes with CM, as Wittmann's Tiger rampages through British lines. Update: CM finally crashed after an hour and half of large battles, reloading files and burning tanks. I think this is acceptable. Could also mean that I have a RAM leak some where. Also, with regards to Unreal reporting frame rates similar to my old TNT2 card with the GTS, I found out that Unreal simply can't report numbers that high. It just said I was getting 6 FPS when I know that I probably getting over a hundred (I've seen 6 FPS before on my Mac, so I know what that looks like, and this wasn't it!) 8. Most of thee GPFs usually mention D3D errors (especially in anything that uses the Unreal Engine). I also went out and bought a Geforce 2 GTS 64 MB card today (the Hercules one). I'm also using the 6.18 drivers again, turned off FSAA and I upgraded the cards bios. CM looks great and the camera responses quicker. No lock ups so far, but I've only played a few turns of Vickers Bocage-Tiger! FS2 seems to like the new card, but Unreal is giving me a fit still. This is 3 month old computer, and the processor, disk drives and motherboard have not been upgraded (Everything else has been). Also, I've reinstalled windows three times now. However, each time has been with the HP recovery disk, which dumps drivers for things that I remove right back into the OS. I've been doing some thinking along this line, and was wondering if moving my current Inf folder out of windows and letting windows detect the hard I actually have on my system and install the proper drivers would do the trick? So I give it a shot?
  9. Well, removing the VIA and ALi AGP drivers hasn't changed my system much. I ran a quick test, and it still crashes. Also, would a lack of memory cause a general protection faults. When my games don't lockup completely, they usually crash with some sort of GPF error.
  10. Looks like AGP 1x makes my system more unstable, as some D3D programs crash much quicker now. Back to 2x. For some reason Powerstrip has disabled sidebanding and won't turn it back on. Must be a first time use glitch. I haven't tried uninstalling the VIA AGP driver yet, but thats a simple matter since I have the set up program. I notice another interesting thing I my Inf folder. I have something called ALiAGP.inf. What it does, I have no idea. I'm going to see what happens when I remove it. Also, is it possible for CM and my other programs to be 'choking' when they try to get data from the swapfile? (BTW, Powerstrip confirmed that Windows is taking up about 100 MBs of Ram on start up. What a bloated OS. I wish I could stop that.) And is Windows ME any better than 98 SE? (maybe I should make my signature read "Crash Magnet")
  11. With regards to the texel alignment, setting 3 (which should be default) is what most programs (including CM) look best with. The only exception to this I've encounter is Falcon 4.0, which is another story....
  12. I installed the AGP miniport and the Powerstrip program. I had already installed the VIA drivers, including the IDE and the 4.03 AGP driver. Turns out sidebanding was off on my card, so I turned it on (haven't tested it yet). I'm currently running at AGP 2x. Is there much difference between the 1x, 2x and 4x settings, speed and stablity wise? I haven't downloaded the BIOs yet, as ASUS's description of the K7M differs slighty from mine. They mention the K7M having an ISA slot and a few other things mine doesn't have. Is it possible that HP modified the board? Because it definity says K7M on it. I'm not going to install the BIOs until I'm sure its reasonably safe.
  13. Well, my advice would be to either build your system, or get a hold of a build to order company (such as Falcon Northwest) and get a machine built within your budget, but MOST IMPORTANTLY, without a lot of crap preloaded on the system. I got a 'high end' HP (which is a joke, since only the processor is high end. I had to replace the sound card and modem, and I am now in the market for a video card). My Grandparents recently got a 'low end' Dell. Both machines came with a lot of stuff preloaded on it, most of which got deleted. All that extra stuff leaves behind/modifies DLLs and who knows what else that can FUBAR your system. The key thing is to keep it stream line (which is a very difficult thing to do with Windows... I think I want my Mac back). You might be able to find one of these no-thrills machines at your local sears or circuit city, but I doubt it. Also, if you can find your video card's IRQ under display adapter in your System control panel, try looking around in the Display control panel. I know this probably doesn't help much, but its the best I can offer.
  14. I couldn't find anything to turn down my AGP or to turn off the sidebanding. I look through the registry, and couldn't find anything there either (although I did find a reference to my old sound card and deleted it. No effect). Could this possibly have something to do with my SB Live? I wouldn't think it would as the crashes happen only when a lot of units are in the game or when there is a lot displayed, and since I have 256 MB Ram and a 1024MB swap file, this leads me to believe its my graphics card... Also, I did find out that my mother is a K7M, so I might try to find a different BIOs for it (what I have now won't let me do too much). That AGP wizard wouldn't work, kept complaining that I don't have a Creative Video card, which is true. My TNT2 is some noname card. Thanks for the graphics card advice. I didn't know that about the drivers. [This message has been edited by Arrow (edited 08-31-2000).]
  15. With regard to the tanks, German tanks generally have more armor and are slower than there allied counterparts. Think '20 pound sledgehammer.' Allied tanks, while faster, have thinner armor, and usually a smaller gun. I'd call them 'regular carpenter's hammer.' This is very general, and the are several exceptions. When fighting as the germans, keep the enemy tanks in front of yours. When fighting as the allies, keep moving and try to get a side or rear shot on the german tanks. There is nothing (ok, very little) that is more enjoyable than position a M5 Staut light tank so it gets a shot at the rear of a heavy Panther G. Talk about a beautiful kill.
  16. Ok, I went through all the motions with reinstalling the 5.33 drivers. That improved things. However, if I go to anything less than 31 MB PCI texture memory my system will crash when 3D games are running. I figured this out by playing Unreal and Freespace2 (Unreal crashed in 15 minutes, FS2 crashed in 30 seconds). I haven't tested this out in CM yet, but I'm definitly going to (btw, if I didn't mention it, the lockups happen most during replays, or if I let the game sit for a few minutes during turn planning). Just to be safe, I set the PCI texture memory to 48 MB, for a total of 64. Fog emulation table is enabled. As for were I got the memory usage, that was displayed in TNT2 properties tab in the display control panel. According to the System control panel, I have 90% resources free (which should translate into 230 MB free ram, if I understand the way Windows works correctly). Also, since I'm believing more and more that my TNT2 card is my main problem, I want to replace it. In your opinion, should I go with a Geforce 2 GTS 64MB or an ATI Radeon? (And why can't these PCs work like Macs? Never had this problem with a Mac)
  17. Well I managed to get the IRQ on the sound card to change. I had to change it to two different slots, and I had to disable COM1 and COM2 (which I don't use). My system is more stable now, but it still crashes. With CM itself, I notice the lock problem is more likely to happen if I reload a save game two or three times (some days I take the loses the AI inflicts on me, other days I restore from an earlier save). With my computer in general, I think another part of my problem is that my TNT2 has only 16MB of memory, that the video card likes to invade my PCI memory (my BIOs won't let me turn this off. In fact, my BIOs won't let me do much of anything). Yet anothere part of the problem is that windows likes to eat 100 to 130 MBs of RAM on start up! Thats with only Explorer and Systray running. Also, this problem occurs on both Nvidia's Det2s (5.33) and Det3s (6.18). Any other advice you have would much appericated, Schrullenhaft, thanks for taking the time to reply to this post.
  18. IRQ stands for Interrupt Request, correct? If so, then I think this might be my problem! Both are set to 11. Whats the easiest way to change this? (let me guest, change PCI slots for the SB Live, right?). Windows also claims that both cards are conflict free. Yeah, right. Also, my BIOS won't let my play with the aperture size. As for reinstalling, I've done all of that twice. And everything is running at its default clock speed. [This message has been edited by Arrow (edited 08-29-2000).]
  19. I'm having a very similar problem. Sometimes CM will run for up to half an hour and then it will lock up. Other times it will run for only five minutes before locking up. And a few times it plays with no problems. When it does lock up, the audio is still playing, and Ctrl-Alt-Del only results in green vertical lines across the top of the screen and causing the sound to loop. I'm also running a fairly new system, HP 9695c: Windows 98 SE Athlon 850 256 MB Ram at 100MHz TNT2 Pro, 16 MB (and I have a feeling that this could be part of the problem) Creative Soundblaster Live X-Gamer Creative Modemblaster I'm running the latest version of CM, have the latest drivers for the SB Live and the MB, latest VIA chipset drivers, latest bios and the latest Nvidia drivers (6.18, also tried 5.33 drivers with the same problem). I've also had lockups and GPFs in Unreal Engine games similar to CM's lock ups. Anyone have an suggestions on how to fix this problem (oh, and I am using Enditall). Thanks
  20. Just becareful when you have friendly aircraft buzzing around. I played "Clash of Eagles" the other day, and had one of my american platoons face to face point blank with a german platoon. Well the airplane only saw troops and a (knocked out) german vehicle near by, so it assume that both platoons were german, and drop its 500 pounder right onto of my platoon! I lost two squads outright to that! At least those flyboys took out most of german armor to make up it for it.
  21. Someone may have already stated what I'm going to post here, as I've only the first and last pages. Also, I'm not trying to add to the flames (although I have this nagging feeling that I'm only dumping a drum of naplam on a fire). So here it goes: Many of us today view Nazi ideology as the most evil thing on the earth, which is true. However, as we do this, we compare Nazi ideology to our own, and quickly assume that our 'civilized' western capitalist ideology is far better (I also agree strongly with capitalism). However, we, at least in the US do not realize how closely we came to being the next 'Nazis' in 1950. Its call McCarthism. In our grand quest to wipe out all vestages of communism in America, we became like alot the Nazis (and the Communist, for that matter). We were censoring the media, pointing fingers at each other, and finding scape goats to blame problems on. Even though I did not grow up in this time, much of what I said is in the history books, and can be confirmed by people that were in thick of it. I'm greatful that 60's came along (I can't believe I just said that), with is hippies and activist, otherwise we probably would had continued down the slope towards opression (in the name of freedom, btw. Didn't Hitler say something to that effect in the 30s?). In the 50s, if the FBI, CIA, McCarthy, and all the other crazed anti-communist organizations had gotten their way, we probably would have had concentration camps for supposed communist, who in reality was just a neighbor or coworker that pissed you off and you labeled him a communist. Now that is scarey. I think all westerners (especial us Americans) need to remember this the next time we start bashing other people's ideologies and labeling them evil. Don't get me wrong, I love America with all its rights and faults, but it scares me to think just how close we came to becoming just like our enemies. I also think that we should all be reminded of this fact.
  22. Ahhhhaaaa, Very clever grasshopper. I didn't even know that was there! Thanks!
  23. I'm having the same problem as Waycool, I'm running DX7 with an Athlon 850Mhz, TNT2 Pro and 256 MB Ram. I've tried freeing up more resources (got it up to 95% free, which made my friends jealous), changing the Graphics card settings, in game settings, and even the extreme stuff, such as reinstalling windows (although that was for fixing something else). I'm using the full version with the 1.03 update. ------------------ As the bumper sticker says: "I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it!"
  24. This my first post to this forum, although I've been reading post here all summer long. CM is one of the best games I have ever played. I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask for technical support, but here it goes: After playing a medium or larger map for five minutes or longer, my computer has a habbit of freezing the game (hitting the escape key allows me to return to the desktop). Then I relaunch the game, and after another five to ten minutes my computer will lock up completely. I'm running Windows 98 se, a TNT2 Pro (with the new 6.18 drivers), an SB Live card and 256 MB RAM and 95% resources free. Also, I've had this problem (on occasion)with the demo on my Mac, but I haven't tried the full game yet. (and for those who I know will ask- this is a legit copy, NOT warez) Thanks for your help, and you will probably see more of my post in the future. LONG LIVE CM! ------------------ As the bumper sticker says: "I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it!"
