  1. Here ya go. Pattons Tank Drive: D-Day To Victory; Green, Michael; 0760301638 The link below might interest a few of you. http://www.opengroup.com/open/hjbooks/welcome.shtml
  2. I recently had a problem with infantry not engaging a target. An enemy halftrack was approaching the remains of my company. There were woods on both sides the road. I lined the road on both sides, and set an ambush point in the middle of the road. The halftrack attempted to move down the road and my infantry enganged it with small arms fire and grenades, like you would expect and the halftrack reversed the heck out of there. Well, it didn't have anywhere else to go, so it tried 3 more times. I hid my troops and set the ambush the same way each time. The first 2 times the troops attacked and the halftrack reversed out again. The 3rd time the halftrack moved right on through and my guys just rotated on it and watched it go right by. Well, the turn ended and I manually ordered them to run after and target it. They ran after it and fired on it, and took it out with grenades the next turn. Just seemed strange that they would let it go right on by the turn before. I've witnessed this previously as well, except while manually targeting an enemy vehicle with infantry without using ambush markers. The infantry just refused to fire and instead decided to watch the vehicle go right past. Those were the only two times I've seen this happen. Maybe there's a logical explanation, but it seemed strange.
  3. I think it's a bug. I had an entire squad vanish recently.
  4. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>CM does not use the actual pixels of the 3D landscape to calculate hull-down status. Instead, hull-down is determined by the in-game algorithms "under the hood". The "hull-down" text appears when a unit is hull-down, as determined by the algorithms. Without text, there is no difference between hull-down or not hull-down. Yes, this is an abstraction.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Wait a minute. I understand how hull down is determined by the game. But does this translate to mean that terrain plays absolutely no part in providing protection for tanks unless you see the magical 'hull down' text? In other words, it's either you see the hull down text or you might as well be right up on top of the hill for all to see?
  5. I just read up on it real quick like. What this is, is an HBO miniseries produced by Spielberg and Tom Hanks. It's 8 parts, the fifth of which will be directed by Hanks, but Spielberg had to decline being involved as a director due to other commitments. He and Hanks will both be involved in it's production to an extent however.
  6. I just tried this myself and I got the super fast high pitched hurt my ears problem too.
  7. I should have put this in my previous post, probably, but anyway... A jeep with a .50 may or may not be more valuable on the battlfield than an .50 MG infantry team. Sure, if points were equivelant to the real life cost in money of the unit, a jeep should be worth more points. But points in CM correspond to the value of the unit related to combat effectiveness, correct? So everything in the game could be argued to be more or less point worthy depending on the context. So you have to take some kind of formulated average. Maybe on average, an infantry MG team IS worth more than a Jeep with an MG attached. BTS has developed the points formula to determine what "average" means in CM. If this "average" formula is off in some way, then modifications of specific variables might need to be made, or as is proposed in this case, new ones added. For example, if mobility was never included in the formula, then maybe it should be added. That's a specific variable that can affect all units, and help ultimately decide whether vehicles on average should be worth more points. I'm just not sure that adding a base "vehicle" value is the best answer. Just because you have an MG attached to a vehicle doesn't necessarily make it more effective in combat. 8. I find the AI can be quite challenging when you play Attack scenarios, allowing the AI to defend. You can also give them experience or numerical bonuses if needed.
  9. I'm not sure if this is what your proposing but I don't think the formula should be changed to just add "vehicle" to it. price = original mysterious formula + vehicle. I think things like speed, mobility, and carrying capacity (which all partly make up the vehicle variable) should be taken into account separately. There are many different types of vehicles in the game, and I'm not sure that just adding "vehicle" to the formula would justly account for every one of them. There may or may not be another more specific variable that needs to be added to the mysterious formula, that would somewhat directly impact the price of vehicles, I don't know.
  10. Implementing the buying of a platoon of jeeps in some way is an interesting idea, as outlined previously. On another topic, it seems like Shermans could be given the same option. Why not allow 3 or whatever Shermans to be purchased at a lower cost than it would take to get each one separately? Of course Shermans could also be selected in singles to free up money for other tanks, but it might be a better bargain to go for the packaged deal. Perhaps that would further increase their appearance in the game in higher numbers, instead of just being the cheap tank people buy after they spend most of their armor money on the more effective, yet more rare variety of allied tanks. 11. I'm playing Vossenack now, and it doesn't look too good for me! I played very well winning Fear in the Fog, and I carried over to my next scenario being too cocky. That'll teach me. Anyway, one of my favorites has to be Le Leroy - A hard stand. I still can't get over the move a pesky Allied tanker put on me to circle around me for a shot at my rear. That still amazes me when I think about it.
  12. Yes, those hotkeys are listed in the manual that comes with the game. But you can print it out from the demo anyway. This is with Windows 98... When you bring up the hotkey menu within the game press Alt + Print Screen. That saves the game image to your clipboard. Then open paintbrush and paste it in there. Then you can cut the hotkey menu out of the larger image and save it to another file. You can inverse the black and white colors for printing purposes. (uses less ink) Takes about 5 minutes. But there might be other ways to take a screenshot as well, but I haven't played around with that.
  13. I caught it last night. It was interesting to hear from the perspective of the Sherman tankers themselves. I can only imagine how it must have felt to see Sherman tanks brewing up all around you like that, and seeing fellow tankers on fire trying to scramble out of their tanks. It kind of made me think about how it would be interesting to have CM simulate a tank brew up the way the footage showed it. I mean having the ammunition ignite and go off inside the tank, basically blowing it apart from the inside out. Talk about a morale decreaser. 14. I downloaded some from CMHQ that look a little like those last night. The ones that had 4 helmet designs to choose from. They look fantastic. [This message has been edited by Mr. T (edited 09-22-2000).] [This message has been edited by Mr. T (edited 09-22-2000).]
  15. I think Dave is on the right track. If you go to high on a card, then your system might end up being the bottleneck anyway. Also, how much RAM is in your system? It's always possible that more memory may actually be a better upgrade for you. You could actually get a faster card AND a memory upgrade combined for close to, or less than the price you might pay for the highest end video cards. I think a Voodoo3 or TNT2 card and 128M of RAM would be a better upgrade than a Geforce2 GTS for example. [This message has been edited by Mr. T (edited 09-22-2000).]
  16. I'm going to the bathroom. But I'll be back later.
  17. Yeah, I bet saying you haven't been assimilated, and then getting assimilated right after that is overrated. I wonder what it must be like to be truly spontaneously assimilated. *Sigh* That must be something....
  18. Wow your right! I mean, not liking CM and all is a little weird I suppose, although still believable. But the 14M being huge thing! Something strange is going on here.
  19. Take baseball for example. Everyone's playing the game, having a fine time at it, getting along OK. Someone gets a hit and he has a nice chat with the first baseman from the other team. Everythings going pretty smooth. Well, one team's pitcher senses a lack of respect given to his fastball, or the batter starts crowding the plate, so he decides he's going to start throwing a few pitches inside. Well the other team gets a little irritated and comes back with some inside pitches of their own. So this irritates the the first team and they come back again inside and eventually hit a batter. Well the other team won't stand for that, so they come back an hit one of their batters. The batter charges the mound and then the benches clear and a huge fight breaks out. They end up beating the tar out of each other, and then afterwards they go back to playing the game again, under an new mutual understanding of one another's position on how the game should be played, and the consequences that might result if played otherwise.
  20. I found it! http://www.siteonsound.com/CMReadingList.htm This site is just what your looking for! Thanks to Rob Varak for putting together that site. [This message has been edited by Mr. T (edited 08-24-2000).]
  21. Hey, what's that cool website that has a list of reading suggestions for the CM gamer (WWII interested type person) listed on it?
  22. Search for "Book suggestions?" in the subject written by Mr. T That newbie asked the same newbie question a while back. BTW I bought the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF WEAPONS OF WWII from the Barnes and Noble website. As far as I've seen, it covers everything you'll find in CM with a decent little description and plenty of neat little pictures, plus much much more! 23. Maybe try setting the ambush marker further down the road almost behind your units, then the whole column of vehicles might be in range at the time the first vehicle reaches the marker. Of course your still at the mercy the the Tac AI to target the correct units, but at least the Tigers are within the same striking distance, if not closer, in relation to the rest of the units.
  24. I think the mind control algorithms need to be tweaked in the next patch. The other day I caught myself looking away from my monitor to see what the weather was like outside!!! BTS!!
