  1. Howdy, Just thought I'd drop in my 2cents... I have both BB and BO. I just went away for the holidays and brought my Mac laptop and the only game I have that I can play on it, CM:BO. I played 4 games of Quick Battle and started a historical scenario on the plane home... BB is good, but I don't find it remarkably better. I remain convinced the game (and I mean both) are my "Desert Island" game - the one I'd want if I could only have one game...that's saying a lot for me. Get 'em.
  2. I don't know if this is an original idea, but I couldn't find it via a quick search on the subject, so here goes. It finally hit me how I can make very cool movies from CM games. They are not interactive like the 1-minute VCR files at the end of each turn (i.e., they are like videos: you can't control the camera position). I hooked my digital video camcorder to my PC which has a TV out on the video card. Then I simply recorded video of the turns running, one at a time. This is VERY cool, because you can use the camera controls of CM to do things that Speilberg would envy. You can change shot angles, shoot the same moment a few times from different angles, and so on and so on. Use your imagination...it's great. Then I connected my DV camcorder to my Mac and brought the video into iMovie2 and edited things together. (If you haven't seen how easy iMovie is, you'll be stunned.) You can add music, narration, titles, etc. easily. Then you can either output to the camera and you could then go to VHS and watch them on TV. Or you can output to a Quicktime movie. Quicktime is very easy to work with, but it's a memory hog if you want anything large (720x640, I think). (A 4.5 minute movie took a gig of drive space...) There are ways to compress that, but that involves getting deeper into the DV software with something like Cleaner 5, etc. If there is interest in more details, I'll reply or maybe make a smaller Quicktime video and post it as an example. It's very cool - your battles now become movies, and you're the director! The one downside of this easy route is that the control bar from CM (bottom of the screen) is visible, as is the mouse cursor. But I can live with that!
  3. Howdy, I'm sure someone has got a list somewhere of the .bmp files that are used for graphics in CM. I searched in vain on this forum; can someone point me in the right direction, please? Thanks
  4. Yeah, Go Kyle! That would be a very cool thing if you can pull it off. Being able to view the whole battle as part of the AAR would be a great addition to what CM can do already. Hang in there!
  5. Schrullenhaft, Thanks for the info! That's really useful. (How come I didn't find that stuff!) As it turns out, I am having NO trouble hosting the beta v1.1, even behind the firewall (Black Ice) with it on the "Nervous" setting (level 3 of 4, and 4 is "Paranoid"). My hat's off to the BTS guys for getting this beta off to such a good start. Well done to all hands!
  6. (I apologize if there's something already on the boards somewhere to this effect, but I searched and couldn't find anything.) I think I need to get port 7023 open to play the TCP/IP version, correct? Is there anything else I need to open? And here's the kicker: HOW do I get those ports open? I'm using Win98se, and I'm behind the Black Ice firewall (on a cable modem) with a semi-static IP (don't ask...they supposedly update/change it weekly, but it hasn't changed for a while...weirdness). I'd be very grateful is someone could either point me to a place to get this info or post it here. Thanks heaps!
  7. CM is clearly unique and I certainly love it tons. But I am one of those strange people who DO still play other things, partly to be able to play with friends (multiplayer). But now that will change, eh? Here are the disks I've been keeping handy lately: Close Combat "5" Sid Meyer's Gettysburg (and Antietam) MS Combat Flight Sim 2 I just ordered Steel Beasts, and I would be rushing to get B-17 II, but they dropped the multi-player ability, so... 8. Well, thanks for keeping us up to date, at least. Obviously, there are many of us eagerly waiting for this game to reach its true potential!
  9. OK, it's time for the monthly question. So what's the REAL story on the promised TCP/IP plan? (The delay wouldn't frustrate me so much if BTS hadn't been telling the media that TCP/IP play would be coming out fairly soon after the game's release.) I think BTS has chosen (knowingly or unknowingly) to focus on the smaller audience who are satisfied with a PBEM (or solo) game rather than shoot for the much larger market of a real multiplayer format. Too bad.
  10. While I love CM as a solo game, PBEM is a little slow. When introduced, the word from BTS was that a patch would add TCP/IP play. What happened? Still hopeful, Capt. Pig
  11. Hi, I read that there are some issues with Logitech mice, but I haven't found any solution so far. I've got the latest drivers for my (Win) Logitech Wheel Mouse (model M-C48) and it works fine in the game. When making up games/scenarios (which is a GREAT FEATURE!) it gets funky and won't show the effects of a click until another click has been done, generally. This gets ugly! Anyone have a fix or workaround? Thanks.
  12. Just one thought on the slow PBEM thing: If you and your opponent want to avoid the droll waiting time between moves, play two games at once! It's slightly tricky in keeping the names of the files straight, but so is walking and chewing gum... It'll keep you busy.
