  1. Unless I am forced to do otherwise I'll take a mainly infantry force of Heer rifle squads, transported in halftracks, supported by PzKfw IVs, panzerschrecks and artillery, typically 81mm and 105mm offboard. If I have the points I may add a few StuH 42s. If I have even more points I will add more artillery, typically rockets for their shock value. If I have still more points I will either a) add onboard mortars, B) add a "what-if" force of Pioneers or Volksgrenadier Fusilier squads or c) buy Panthers instead of Mark IVs.

  2. Well, just recently Yahoo.com was sued by the French gov't (IIRC) for the sale of Nazi memorabilia on their auction sites. Yahoo argued, of course, that it is A) merely a clearinghouse for sales, and does not sell any of the goods itself, B) an American company and thus not under French jurisdiction and C) Yahoo.fr did not allow the sale of Nazi memorabilia from its auction sites, therefore complying with the law.

France on the other hand argued that it was Yahoo's responsibility to block French users from visiting Yahoo.com. The suit stood, and AFAIK Yahoo has now prohibited the sale of Nazi memorabilia on their sites.

Personally I thought it was silly, more because of the issue of jurisdiction than anything else, but it is something to be aware of.

  3. Wow, can't believe I missed this. Comedy gold.

I think Churchill said it best: "England provided the time, America provided the money, Russia provided the blood." Take away one of the three and the other two fall apart.

And since I have a feeling that Matt's gonna bust this up pretty soon, I'm going to Disneyworld!

    Er, I mean, hi mom!

  4. It already is. The MP 44 is what you're thinking of.

And the AK isn't a direct descendent from what I understand. IIRC the firing mechanism is completely different and it's chambered for a different round. They look similar, but the guts are different.

  5. Thanks for the advice all.

I have a pretty good idea of what components I'd be using, really depending on price. Ie, I'm hoping that Intel will drop the price on the P4 chips by the time I buy, which will hopefully force AMD to drop the price on the 1.2 gig Athlons. Likewise I'm hoping that nVidia releases the Geforce 3 and that the prices on the Geforce 2s drop.

I'm not hoping to save money in the short term, although I think in the long run I'll squeeze a few bucks out of it, especially when it comes time to upgrade, but I'm kinda sick of dealing with all the extra junk that comes pre-installed on most ready-made computers, and it's annoying to go to upgrade and find out that the graphics card is soldered to the motherboard or something.

Anyway, thanks again for the help, all. I'm sure I'll be posting more when I actually get around to doing this.

Honestly I do not see this at all. On the other hand I regularly see posts like this, ie "people who want to play historically are whiny bastards."

Personally I don't care how other people like to play, to each his own. This is why you clarify what sort of game you're looking to play with the guy before you play him.

  7. Sorry if this isn't the right place, but I figured I'd get the most knowledgable responses here.

It's computer upgrade time soon, and I'm looking to assemble a PC myself rather than buying a premade. I've never done this before, so I'm a bit apprehensive. Can anyone recommend a fairly step-by-step guide (preferably a book, rather than online) to putting the things together?

Technically I am fairly so-so. I know a decent amount of terminology, but I have absolutely no hands-on knowledge other than popping in RAM and pnp peripherals. So ideally the guide would be, again, step-by-step and detailed - down to the point of "no, stupid, the plug goes in the hole."

    Any help would be appreciated.

  8. If you managed to survive the Stalin era, you had a good shot at dying naturally. Khrushchev and his successors were not interested in murder, except in extreme cases such as Beria's. For example, when the Politburo decided to replace Khrushchev with Brezhnev, it probably would have been simpler all around to have murdered Khrushchev and called it a natural death. The fact that they removed him relatively gently is fairly telling, IMO. Of course, the Soviet leadership remained perfectly willing to murder non-Russians and throw their weight around in other places, but that's another story.

Anyway, as far as the original question, VM Molotov died in 1986. IIRC he was the last Soviet leader who'd actually lived through the Revolution to die.

  10. Quick question for Spanish Bombs: Clash fan? smile.gif

    But seriously -

IMO I'm not worrying that too few AFVs will be modelled. If KwazyDog is already working on the IS2 (as he alluded to on another thread) I'm assuming that BTS has a fairly large list of vehicles to include in CM2.

But see, there's the real beauty part: I'm less likely to get BSE here in the country that started the whole thing than you are in poor little Germany! Take it up with Franz Fischler, baby, whee!!!

Actually, come to think of it, that would go a long way towards explaining your personality.
