  1. Actually, I didn't know that. What a thing to come home from a VERY long day's work to see - I was wanting it too. BTS....I love you man. Goodnight folks.
  2. What is the unit cost on that? Gotta' be big, I'm betting...
  3. Yes, Apex, that made my morning! Fun AND educational.
  4. I love the Campaign series, TOAOW and I am a Sim Jock myself. I never liked jets, though...well, except for Mig Alley. Fire and forget is just not my thing . CM is a special game, and I agree that it's nice to see a company follow through so well on their product. What sucks is that we know the difference at all. For as much as I have spent on computer games over the years I just came to expect and work around bugs, sloppiness and poor AI. CM is as stable as Starcraft but with tons more depth and playability. And yet the patches keep coming. I hated Screaming Demons Over Europe because, although it looked so nice, it was just a huge mess. The only real improvements I ever saw were 3rd party. It was a damned shame, because it had such promise, you know? I would still like to see a few things in CM, but honestly it's just fine if they never change a thing...well, TCI/IP, but hey... In fact, this game has completely changed the way I will look at all further purchases: I know what my $50 is worth now, so stick your half-finished, bug-ridden, bad-playing "Game" straight up your A**!!!! Ehem. You get the point....
  5. THumpre, I e-mailed you. I am running 1.04 at the moment, and if this is a problem I am happy to keep a spot open for you when you upgrade. Thanks for replying, sir.
  6. I have been puting off playing any PEBM games, partially because of a lack of time, but more probably because I like my ego right where it is. However, the urge to dash myself to bits against the rocks of human intellect has finaly overwhelmed me, so here it is: Anyone want to try a PBEM with a novice? As I probably won't be able to do more than a turn a day, it could be a slightly larger scenario, but it might be a test of your patience for the same reason. With that in mind, if you are interested throw me an e-mail. If you aren't...well...there you go. Thanks.
  7. Jager 7: Thanks very much, what an incredible bit of history. Fionn: LMFAO
  8. All I have noticed is that for a while I will seem to get all the luck, then the computer will. In a single scenario, or even a group of them it is hard to tell, but now I have played the game for around a month and I am always amazed that in one scenario I can't do anything wrong, then in the next I can't do anything right. I believe it evens out in the end - tactics notwithstanding.
  9. Outstanding job! Thank you for continuing the support and refining what is already the best game out there. Hehe, it's all about old school punk rock integrity. "F" the suits!
  10. My 2 cents. Panzer General was the game that hooked me on computer games. I was able to rent it when I got my 1st CDROM and I went 48 hours without sleep just to get every moment out of it. Panzer General 2 was a great game, but not quite as enthralling as the origional, at least for me. My brother bought me PG3D for Christmas and I played it for around a month, but it just wasn't the same for me. I think the Campaign series and TOAOW had pretty much ruined me for PG style games, although I will go back and play PG on my old DOS rig (along with Steel Panthers...) and I still get caught up in it. CM however is, for me at least, an entirely different type of game. Yes it's a Wargame, but it is something more than that. I get truly emotionally involved in a given scenario - I honestly feel "bad" when I lose a squad or a AFV due to my own carelessness. In other games I pretty much just chalk it up to the fortunes of war, but in CM...I don't know: it just matters more. So there.
  11. Great idea for a scenario. That was certainly one of my favorite scenes in that movie. Can't wait to try it! Too bad you can't model the nuns....
  12. Being a BIG WW2 aircraft fan, I gotta go with MIDWAY. The plane takes off as a Helldiver, flies to the Japanese carriers as a Corsair, spots said carriers as a Wildcat, Divebombs said carriers as a Dauntless, flies back to the Enterprise as an Avenger and crashes on the deck as a Hellcat. I was suprised I didn't see a dogfight consisting of Dr1s and Camels, followeed by a strafing run on Midway island by MIG-15s. Anal? A little... 13. I haven't noticed this myself. In fact, last night I was playing a QB, and I had some known FJs in a very low area just beyond the sight of my 60mm. It took like 4 turns of scooting around to get my team into a decent position so that it would fire at all. I have also tried to target things with a 60mm and have recieved an out of range message. Could the enemy have had a hidden arty spotter with an idea of where you were? I have taken out targets I didn't know the exact location of with area target called in by a spotter. Just my thoughts. Good luck.
  14. Speaking only for myself, I would not consider that gamey. I have the same set of limitations you have, and I can choose to deploy some of my units on the extreme flanks to guard for this. I should anyway, in the real world, I believe. Not to mention that flank is where the trees happen to offer the best cover in that scenario. The 1st time I played it in the demo, I remember sending one of my Sherms around that way just in case, so I could pivot if necessary. It's simply one of the limitations we have to deal with in PC games IMHO.
  15. It's the only reason I keep my computer! Well, that and work. And WW2 Flight Sims... OK, I was lying, but MAN, is it incredible!
  16. I thought the last quarter or so of Patton's "War As I Knew It" was fascinating and helpful. The whole book was good, but in the end he actually gets into combat minutae.
  17. um...the one time I threw one into a scanario it disintigtrated a Tiger and Stugg. I guess I got lucky... I have always been under the impression that F/Bs work behind the lines, along supply routes, taking out trains, destroying communications and artilliary, kind of like in TOAW, where the biggest effect your air forces have is attrition. Due to the close-in nature of combat, it would be very difficult not to cause collateral damage from 2-3000 ft in the air, so I gennerally leave them out if I have the choice. Of course, I did (I couldn't help myself) design a crappy little scenario with a huge German armored company on one side, and a single Rifle platoon and like 24 F/Bs on the other. It was a meeting engagement. My platoon held the victory flag until the remnants of the SS infantry surrounded and obliterated them. I surrendered with one squad left and got a Major Victory because the F/Bs had destroyed 23 vehicles and wounded or killed 125 men. Like you haven't..... 18. OK, again, this is just what I have read, but in Patton's memoirs, "War as I knew it" (which I don't have near me - a friend is reading it) he lists casualties and KIA after battles, and I was struck by the number of killed vs. wounded. You get this idea that most of the casualties in a battle are dead, but in fact the ratio is like 1/4 dead/wounded. This I believe is modelled well in CM. Just "seems" incongruous. As for the brewing up situation: That does seem a little odd. I suppose it is possible to be trapped in a tank that is burning, but I would suggest that the game doesn't show wounded men as they are out of action and would eat up resources to model. So they just "cease to exist" as far as the game is concerned. They escape from their AFV and go into the limbo of the wounded, only to be ressurected in the victory screen. Poor fellas.
  19. I can't speak to the tediousness of things, but I regularly jump between the 1, 3 and 7 views, with bases turned on and paths shown, to avoid leaving anyone exposed on accident. I turn the bases off for the replay. I also use the PAUSE order when I am embarking on a vehicle I want to have move before the end of the turn. I try to keep aware of the command delay at all times - that was frustrating at first, but I am used to it now. I would still like to see a roster of some kind, just to keep organised and stuff, but if they never make one I will still love this game.
  20. My favorite moment so far was actually last night, playing Cannes Strongpoint. I created a nice diversion to the north and was able sneak my easterly bazooka team into a copse of trees and take out a wooden and a concrete bunker before the German security teams even realised I had comprimised there perimeter. That's what I LOVE about this game - diversions and stuff really work! WEGO OWNZ!
  21. http://combathq.thegamers.net Just browse around in here. There are tons of things. Check the links and such
  22. It has eaten all my free time for the last two weeks I have had it! If I didn't need to work.... Welcome
  23. Hmmm, well I was in an online squadron (AE71) in EAW for a while, I loved Red Baron 3D. Heroes of Might and Magic series was an old standard. Master of Magic. Any game with good reviews. As far as Wargaming, I only started this hobby AFTER I got my 1st computer (1995), so it started with Panzer General and Steel Panthers. PG2 was a good game, too, but when I found the Campaign series and TOAOW I pretty much just played those for 2 years. The Close Combat games never really worked for me. Too much clicking and scrolling, maybe? Silent Hunter, System Shock 1 & 2, Achtung Spitfire, Age of Kings, Mig Alley. Others.
  24. Am I the only one who doesn't care about graphics? I got my little Voodoo 2 and I run it on fast and compatible, and transparent buildings, and I am fine. In fact, I am happy they didn't go Michealangelo with the eye candy. When I see a "dazzling" 3d game anymore, I just assume it will suck. Sacrifice gameplay for graphics. This is a stupid point of view on my part, but I don't care, it is what it is. All these things are representational and I am cool with that. The game works, F the rest. On the other hand, I do wish my LOS would cut off with the appearant side of a structure. OK, I admit it, I am as anal as the next guy. Hehe Flipper, did you use to Fly EAW?
  25. Joe, real fast, I know it won't make sense at first, but I want you to go to the "door" of your home, open it, and just step out on the porch. It is a smelly, stinky, thick and gooey piece of crap out there. I have to drive to work in it, hehe. Then go back inside and keep doing what needs to be done. I will hit you up for a PBEM this weekend, architect permitting
