  1. You got the Germans to surrender with those lousy Russian troops? I'm impressed... It seems like movement in general is not as easy in CMBB. Troops get tired quicker, get demoralized easier when they're out of their foxholes, don't rally as quickly even when officers are present, and in general it's a more static game. I haven't been able to pull off some of the more outrageous tactics that worked in CMBO, such as rushing tanks with infantry and having them blow them up with grenades and such. In CMBB you won't get NEAR a tank like that -- your men will either be immediately routed or get exhausted on the run. I have had no success with the tank hunter teams yet... Maybe this is more realistic, however...And it will make vehicles more useful, like troop carriers and so on...How else can you conduct a fluid defense, move around mobile reserves, etc.?
  2. Well, I started the demo download late last night and woke up this morning ready to lead some Russian troops into combat! I wasn't counting on the lousy morale of those Russian foot soldiers, though -- I was routed pretty quickly! CMBB looks absolutely fantastic! Some things I especially like are the new muzzle flashes/smoke from tank/inf gun fire, the tall pine trees that blow in the wind, the incredibly detailed faces on the troops that look great even on my not-so-great video card, the steppe terrain, well I could go on but I better stop... Anyway, much praise is due the team at battlefront.com -- thanks for really making my Labor Day weekend! Vireo
  3. I don't know if this has been discussed or not, but I hope the Soviet player in CMBB has the option of using mobile engineers to sow mines and lay other obstacles to stop advancing german armor, as they did at Kursk and I'm sure elsewhere. Anyone know if this is a possibility?
  4. One thing that has come up in accounts of WWII combat that I've read is the use of flares, lighting up the night sky, signalling the beginning of a night attack or being fired in an effort to spot attacking troops. On a related note, the Americans also used "artificial moonlight" -- a spotlight bounced off low cloud cover -- to spot enemy troops trying to attack a bridge or something. It would be cool if the use of flares could be modeled in CM. Perhaps enemy units illuminated by a flare could be spotted at a greater distance than is usually possible in a night battle. Just a thought.
  5. Hi, I've tried downloading CM scenarios from various websites and I can't get them to work. They download as zip files, but Stuffit Expander 6.0.1 doesn't automatically unzip them -- I have to save them, and then double-click on them, at which point the system tells me it doesn't know what application created them, but it gives me the option of using Stuffit to expand them. Stuffit will unzip them, leaving me with a text file with the .cmb suffix. If I drag one of these into the Scenarios folder however, CM won't recognize them. Is there a problem with using zip files on a Mac?
  6. Hi, I would like to network locally a '98 Powerbook G3 Series with a Dell laptop in order to play two-player CM games. How easy is this and what would it entail? Thank you, Brendan
  7. I was playing the Infatuate II scenario that was converted from Squad Leader and I noticed that, while the data on the Churhill says that the main weapon's range is 250m, the Target command does not show "Out of range" when you exceed 250m. As long as the target is in your LOS, the Target command will let you select said target. Of course, when you hit Go and let the turn unfold, the Churchill will not fire at out of range targets, but this messed me up the first time because I didn't know the range of the weapon and therefore thought I could hit a German cannon from about 400m. As a side note, shouldn't the range on a howitzer-type weapon such as this one be longer, because after all the weapon lobs the shell into the air and I figured it would probably be able to travel quite far. I had alot of trouble keeping the lone Churchill I was alocated alive. These vehicles seem like they would be really cool, but the German 75mm's always got a bead on me before I could get in range. It didn't help that I only had ONE vehicle. Any thoughts? Brendan
  8. I've been looking at photos from WWII and noticed that many tanks were camoflauged with tree branches, leaves, etc. Has anyone given any thought to a tank mod that would depict this impromptu attempt by tank crews to hide their vehicles? I don't know how easy it would be to depict this effectively, but it's just a thought... Brendan
  9. I agree with everyone else -- a Mac sound mod manager would be great! I enjoyed the new sounds in MDMP-1, and would very much like to use the sound pack converted from Panzer Elite. Thanks for all the great work that folks have done on behalf of CM for the Mac! Brendan
  10. Thanks for the reply, Schrullenhaft. I'm using the internal LCD, and I have my monitor resolution at 1024x768, color depth set to Thousands of Colors. I haven't tried limiting the number of extensions/control panels loaded. The problem occurs on almost every scenario -- very rarely will it start on the first attempt, so rarely in fact that I can't remember what scenario it last did that on...I think CM may want to run at 640x480, because the desktop is messed up sometimes when CM is running. For example, if the game is on but idle and the computer goes to sleep, the desktop appears in 640x480 resolution. So is CM trying to tell me it wants to run at a lower resolution? I'm trying to use the SwitchRes app to make CM run at a higher resolution, but maybe I should just set the monitor to 640x480 and see if it runs smoother?
  11. Hi, I'm running CM on a G3 laptop, 233Mhz model, and the game almost always crashes the FIRST time I try to start playing a battle -- I hit done after reading my final briefing, it begins loading the map and - bam! - right back to the Finder! Then I open CM, try to start that same battle again and it works like a charm. It only does it once per session. It's not a big problem, but I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a sign of something worse... Thanks for any help, Brendan
  12. Hello, I am running CM on a G3 Powerbook 233Mhz with the built-in RageLTPro display card that came with it. Can anyone tell me what the maximum monitor resolution is? I suspect it is 640x480, but can I go higher and, if so, how? Thanks, Brendan
  13. Greetings to everyone... I'm running CM on a 1998 G3 laptop with Mac OS 8.5.1. After playing the game for the first time, I quit and I noticed that the items on my desktop had been rather chaotically rearranged. No big deal. However, the control strip that is usually at the bottom of the screen had moved nearly to the top! This is a somewhat annoying place for it to be, and I can't find anything in the control panels or anywhere else to put it back where it belongs. Has anyone else encountered this problem, and/or anyone know how to fix it? Thanks in advance for any help, Brendan
