T'was the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The rounds were hung in the turret with care, In hopes that Panthers soon would be there; The soldiers were nestled all snug by the treads, While visions of ambushes danced in their heads; And Sarge in his Sherman, and I in my Jeep, Had just settled down for a long winter's sleep, When out in the open there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the Jeep to see what was the matter. Away to the tree-line I went like a light, Loaded my weapon, ready to fight. The moon on the gun of that dastardly German tank Gave the luster of carnage and then my heart sank. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a bazooka team wearing mod-winter gear. With a little old gunner, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment that tank we would lick. More rapid than eagles more soldiers they came, And the gunner he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name; "Now, Kelly! now, Oddball! now, Crapgame and Babra! Hey, Madmatt! hey Steve! Hey, Kwazy and Charley! To the edge of the trees! To the base of the wall! Now get there! Get there! Get there now all!" As dry leaves that before a bombardment fly, When they meet with a projectile, mount to the sky. So in to the tree-line the soldiers they flew, With arms full of weapons, and I was there too. And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the ground The impact and ricochet of each little round. As I drew out my pistol, and was turning around, There appeared a man who came in with a bound. He was dressed all in green, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with the marks from flame soot; A demo charge and zook he had flung on his back, And he looked like a camel ready to crack. His eyes -- how they twinkled! It was really quite scary! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the color of his mod-skin was as yellow as the snow; The pin of a grenade he held tight in his teeth, And his helmet encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and an iron hard belly, he was soldier who made all enemies turn jelly. He was big and mean, nothing like a jolly old SS elf, And I was awed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know Gerry had plenty to dread; He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And pulled out the Zook; then turned with a jerk, And placing the Zook aside of his head, He gave a nod and fired it, the Panther was dead; He sprang to his M3, to his team gave a yell, And away they all flew like a bat out of hell. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, "HAPPY CM CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A CM GOOD-NIGHT."
