  1. I think they just bailed. Imagine sitting in an unmoving, unarmed steel chest in the middle of a battle field. The sensible thing to do is to try to sneak away, don't you think? Crew's bad luck was that the 50cal was behind them, else they could have escaped. C.
  2. Or you can bypass the CD protection scheme one way or another. Illegal, but the only good way to play the game for us laptop owners. C.
  3. The Pz.Kpfw. II Ausf. L was a cat, the Luchs we all love. Another version of the PanzerII was named Leopard, but never put in production. see http://www.achtungpanzer.com/leo.htm Pz.Kpfw. VII Löwe (Lion) was on the drawing table. See http://members.tripod.com/~fingolfen/superheavy/lowe.html Of course, they had the Puma, but that doesn't count as a tank.
  4. Sure. It MUST be a troll. Nobody can be so (insert favourite word for mentally challenged here) as Mr. Paton appears, in real life. But it's kind of entertaining, so whoever you are, keep them posts coming. C.
  5. Me too hates metoo-posts. But just can't help it. Can you give it to me too, Rune? thanx C.
  6. Once again I point to my Panther vs Canadians page. (Hope this work?) This was v1.05, and grenades might be harder to use against vehicles in v1.12? C.
  7. I discovered CM just before release, and never had the opportunity to enjoy the various alpha/beta versions you veterans played. Is it possible to find one of these somewhere? Would be nice to see more of the evolution of the game in production. C.
  8. Again I point to my photo short story at http://home.no.net/catullus/cmbo/panther1.html At pic 4 you clearly see the middle grunt (left-handed) throw a grenade. C.
  9. I would absolutely love it. As a NATO recon ranger educated in the middle of the '80s, Soviet weapons and vehicles from that epoch are the weapons I know. Maybe artillery, choppers and fighters would be more important than in CM, but now even infantry squad would have AA capabilities. And never forget, in any war, any unit is either a grunt, or a support unit. The war will still be won or lost by the infantryman. C.
  10. You guys haven't tried that patch? I got it last week. It works OK, 105 artillery now kill pillboxes more easily than in 1.05, but still not as easy as in 1.00. On the other hand, tanks wait considerably shorter than in 1.05 before swinging turret to cut down crews. This must be fixed. C.
  11. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Doug Beman: you just zip it through the network to the other player. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Of course, best practice before tcp/ip would be to use one of the computers as file server (turn on file sharing, share a folder and map that folder on the other PCs for use as common save/load area). C.
  12. Or better: Make an area. By dragging a rectangle with the mouse, you'll mark every friendly unit in the area. Or is it all units under your command? (Dead units are not marked, don't know about captured and broken ones.) Whatever, area select should do it, then you can shift-click to deselect in case you marked too many. C.
  13. 12 seconds of suspense! Illustrated story at http://home.no.net/catullus/cmbo/panther1.html C.
  14. So, original poster always plays with realistic unit scale? When playing any other scale, it's not even theoretically possible to have true graphic representation of the math/physical model. C.
  15. The truth about Hazel: http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Quarters/7210/ I think he's pretty much read in Finland. Leses han fortsatt i Norge? C.
  16. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>I think sneaking is sort of like a tank hunting. In both cases, units move slowly, and give high priority to shooting. Unfortionatley, you're sneaking because you don't want to be seen, and if you shoot, the enemy knows where you are. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> My experience tells exactly the opposite: Just like The Commissar's troops, my men sneak past the opfor, leaving a trail of own casualties. Sort of stupid, when I really wanted "sneak to contact". Case in point: My schreck team, located on wooded hill, knows about an immobile Sherman less than 50 meters down on the grassy hill side. The Sherman functions as a perfectly placed pillbox, guarding the back area for the retreating amis. I have no other AT capabilities. The Sherman is at the moment shelling an MG team some hundred meters away, at 120 degrees angle away from my schreck team. My estimate says I have about 10 meters of wood to move through to get LOS. I don't want to waste more turns on moving the team in 5-meter intervals, so I give it a 15-meter sneak command. Turn begins. After three meters, the target lines between the team and the Sherman appear. My team sneaks on. After 5 meters, the Sherm's turret begins to turn. My team bravely sneaks on. After 10 meters, the Sherm starts MGing my team. The team takes a casualty, but the surviving AT-trooper sneaks on. After 15 meters, he finally sits down, mounts the tube on his shoulder, aims... And gets a 75mm HE round straight in the chest. Maybe I could have achieved a better result by waypointing. It's an aestethically unpleasing way to do it. But if it will kill a tank, I might do it next time. But really, all move options should be equipped by flags: move/run/crawl/sneak * to contact * do not get distracted Of course, experience will decide if they actually do as they're told. C.
  17. Played VoT twice as amis and once as germans. I think I learned quite a lot by it. Like: Ambushes are somewhat not very effective without C&C (LMG and infantry squad both panicked and broke after first contact) Flank attacks can save the day. Pillboxes should be opened by the back door. First time the Panther appeared, I was in follow mode on a Sherman, viewpoint 1, with headset on (didn't want to wake wife). The violent transformation of my tank into a fireworks show really scared the crap out of me. I never saw where that came from. The scenario didn't come with my full game. Should it? And are there other pre-gold demo scenarios that were excluded from the full game? And where can I find them? C.
  18. Thank you. This is just more than great. Awesome. C.
  19. OK. I guess every one of us would want those charts. And I don't really see any point begging Jeff sending it to each of us. So, would it be too much to ask one of you to slap the charts on a site. Now? So I don't have to wait for madmatt to return from his Deutschland vacation. C.
  20. Atari? Luxury. On my ZX-81, I usually wrote a quick hex loader and manually recoded the game in Z80 hex codes each time I wanted to play. And every 10 minutes the machine crashed for no reason, and I had to start all over again. Oh well. Still waiting for the game. Road warrior as I am, I really hate having to use CDs. C.
  21. It was mentioned at a Civ2 site. I have some very limited experience with ASL and World at War from way back, but I'm really a strategy gamer, not a tactical war buff. Downloaded the demo for my new W2K laptop, and ordered the game next day. First game I buy in 2 1/2 years. It looks that good. C.
