1. I wasn't there, but I suspect "hold your fire" was being shouted all the time by frustrated sergeants on both sides Running out of ammo is a Bad Thing in CM (as in real wars, I believe) and if it takes a bunch of hide or ambush commands to prevent, so be it. Of course if something really tempting (like a flamethrower) shows up, your regulars are going to fire anyways You might have less hassle with vets or above. They are less prone to loosing off at jaywalkers at 500m. If all else fails, you could try running away - it works for me!
2.
quote:
The SS means, essentially, nothing

Except you paid a bit more and got a nice uniform Oh, and your opponent gets to feel more virtuous when he cooks them with his Crocodile. I think someone once said SS troops tend to have more panzerfausts, but I've never noticed much difference.
3. My guess is you were right first time - he's hull down and probably almost full defilade. Probably all your ATG can see of him is the nasty long barrel poking over the lip...
4. Did the same thing a few months back and was shocked to see the 'bocage' lining the Tuileries gardens was actually a 10 foot iron fence And they ambushed me from behind that?! Still a great scenario though. And a nice spot for a croissant. Panther's definitely the recommended form of transport, though, with that traffic...
5. Ajax, Ray sent me the 'unpublished' RAVE drivers - they fixed a bunch of transparency glitches for my V3. I'd recommend asking him for them (baboon2@bellatlantic.net).
6. In my most recent PBEM Mech vs Inf attacks I've been experimenting with a 105mm, and I think they're pretty handy. The idea is to hide it until you've sent the troops forward to find his MLR. Your guys get artyed to blazes and find his guns etc. By about turn 20 you should have pushed him back to the houses, but may be running short on ammo to winkle him out. Believe me, he won't be happy to see your 105 unlimbering, but there may well be nothing he can do about it. Several flattened/burning houses later and you too will always want some HE backup. Obviously it's a bit superfluous if you have armour, but they're a nasty surprise in Mechanised attacks.
7. How to get them out of the woods? I recommend arty, or failing that, 75mm HE from your Shermans backed up by an infantry assault with plenty of MG support. The the effective range of Infantry AT weapons depends which end you're on - about 50m and three shots to get a hit that bounces off your enemy stug, or a one shot kill at 200m if it's your last tank driving by the woods
8. I can second what Fate says - the latest alpha RAVE drivers are great. Completely usable as far as I'm concerned. I can't load CM b23 PBEM turns, but I expect this to go away with 1.1. I get the same text dots and 1.05 cursor vanish as well as fog wierdness, but these are nothing to worry about. Ray wins again! 6500/SonnetG3/300 Sys8.6 b12ROM, 1.1.3 drivers plus new RAVE driver.
9. This is great news - thanks Ray I find the same V3 problems as Fate: buildings are invisible in view 4 and fairly transparent even in view 1, likewise flags and, to some extent, bits of hillside. This is the key problem that makes it unworkable, but vehicles also look decidedly peculiar, as many external panels are transparent. I'm using 6500/SonnetG3/300, Sys 8.6, tried b11, 12 and 1.1.2 drivers/roms in all sorts of funny combinations to no avail. I'm currently using 1.1.2 without the RAVE driver Grim
10. Just wanted to add my condolences and say thanks for the CM support you've given. The 1.1.3 drivers from MacGamefiles seem identical to the last release as far as CM with a V3 goes (ie transparency problems). If you had it working I'd sure love to get hold of your drivers! Best of luck with the job hunt.
11. Try Midnight Madness at Prum (allies first) for a winter nightmare - my favourite so far. Elsdorf was also excellent. A Walk in Paris is a must, particularly if you've been there.
12. Please pardon my inadequacies, but... I'd really like a LOS area shading tool. The current LOS line is wonderful, but I spend a lot of time dragging it around all over to get an idea of what I can see (esp in gun placement!) It would be great if it were possible to just select "view" and get the map shaded to show how far he can see, or perhaps dimmed where he can't see. I guess it'd be processor intensive, but by the time CM2 comes out we'll all be using 4GHz P5s anyway
13. Hiram, as far as I know you can't shoot your own guys (unless you misidentify them in the dark) - bodies don't block LOF. So the only thing to worry about is how many men do you want to lose at once when the StuG flattens your house You can fit two squads in one small building, but you have to be careful if you're packing, 'cos they have a nasty tendancy to wander into the open for a breath of fresh air. If you want practice, try First Clash at Cambes as either side - plenty of small-town fighting there.
14. Not just you. Me too. If you look closely at the tanks, you'll see there are some transparency problems with them too. Of course these are RAVE drivers for the V4/5, not the V3, so we should be grateful that they work at all. Just make sure you only play in farmland and it's almost playable... Fortunately Ray has said he's working on the V3 drivers and hopes to have something out by Christmas. Have you been very good this year?
15. DaveF, a guy called Twilight has posted that he has CM running fine with a V3 and the new drivers (check 3dfxgamers.com mac forum). I've tried it and it very, very nearly worked first time (transparency probs). It's close enough that I think a nice clean install and ROM flash of b12 followed by 1.1.2 might do the trick. There were no cursor probs, so apparently no need for the CM update on V3s! I'll let you know if I can get it to go. I have a crummy 6500/L2G3 30, sys 8.6, V3 2000, so if it works for me it should work for anyone! Still crossing my fingers that Ray will give us nice unofficial V3-specific drivers, but.
16. I've had a tank disappear while I was doing my orders. All other vehicles were visible and I could select the tank with + and -, just couldn't see it! I panicked for a while, then tried turning "show vehicles" off and on again, and it came back. Just a suggestion.
17. As far as I know there are not lots of issues with the V3 and CM on Macs. It just doesn't work To be accurate, there are no Mac RAVE drivers for the V3 (and the V5 ones won't drive CM on a V3 to the best of my knowledge). But do not despair! Our simian friend has promised us Mac V3 RAVE drivers in "a few weeks" and that was a few weeks ago, so it must be any day now All the issues you've seen on this forum with the V3 have been Wintel ones, and appear to be driver specific. Consequently there is no reason to think Baboon2 won't give us Mac users beautiful CM friendly performance on our treasured (and very cheap) V3s.
18. Guys, I hate to be the wet blanket, but isn't a V5 or Radeon crazy overkill for your processor speed? I have a G3 300 and it can't even fill my V3, let alone a V5 or Radeon. I want FSAA as well, but you have to realise that you're paying the big bucks for a card that will only be able to give you those pretty pictures when the processor is good and ready. To be honest I don't think you'll get good performance on big maps from a G3 400 even with a V5 or Radeon (please contradict me, anyone who's tried it). I don't think the Rage 128 is good value for money (it's too expensive to throw away next year), so I'd recommend a V3 along with bribes to Baboon2 to get the RAVE drivers out early
19. Suicides, I had the same experience in that scenario, and found one piece of advice that really helped: Use both sides of the road. Sounds a bit obvious, but if you typically have your unit sizes at +2 or 3 it looks as if there's only room for single file, when actually you may fit 3 abreast. The other point to come out of the threads Intelweenie posted was that the careful management of many vehicles is not everyone's cup of tea, so if it drives you nuts, go for convoy-free scenarios. Personally, I find a smoothly maneuvered convoy as satisfying as a successful building assault.
20. I'm with Holdit. Don't know why you're complaining about bad luck Henri, most of us manage to lose our PBEMs through sheer incompetance
21. I've downloaded the latest sound mods and had a listen to them - some of them are outstanding. I especially like the bogged-immobilised sound, which is totally unmistakeable! Now all we need is some Mac genius to help us put them into CM. Please could you have a go at it aikidorat/bsoplinger? Even an ugly hack would satisfy me, let alone a thing of beauty like your pic mod managers.
22. Hi guys, I just want to add my thanks for all your efforts. I just installed MDMP2 completely painlessly taking only a few minutes. These mod apps are a miracle of modern technology! Only one request - perhaps put the bit about enabling Quicktime Exchange in the Readme. (Or maybe I just can't read!).
23. Good pointers from Pillar. I'd add: - try to get multiple tanks targeting one opponent whenever possible (esp as Allies!) - If you can't bring multiple tanks to bear at least try to distract his gunners with other tempting targets to give your main gunner a chance to find his range (you never really liked those PIAT guys did you?). - Never use Move unless absolutely necessary. It should usually be Fast or Reverse between bounds. - learn to love the armour/AP charts and check each vehicle so you know when a front shot just ain't going to cut it. - turret speed and ground pressure are not pointless details for the grogs (as you will quickly realise if you drive a KT in the wet!) - get used to the dreaded CLOINK! sound. Everyone loses tanks. If you're testing as Feuhrerguy recommends, it can be useful to rerun your moves a few times to help you figure out whether he just got lucky or whether your Hetzer is _never_ going to get his shot off in time .
24. 1. ? As I recall it's automatic when you've OKed all the parameters. 2. http://combathq.thegamers.net/ Enjoy! Stephen
