1. I wasn't there, but I suspect "hold your fire" was being shouted all the time by frustrated sergeants on both sides Running out of ammo is a Bad Thing in CM (as in real wars, I believe) and if it takes a bunch of hide or ambush commands to prevent, so be it. Of course if something really tempting (like a flamethrower) shows up, your regulars are going to fire anyways You might have less hassle with vets or above. They are less prone to loosing off at jaywalkers at 500m. If all else fails, you could try running away - it works for me!
2.
quote:
The SS means, essentially, nothing

Except you paid a bit more and got a nice uniform Oh, and your opponent gets to feel more virtuous when he cooks them with his Crocodile. I think someone once said SS troops tend to have more panzerfausts, but I've never noticed much difference.
3. My guess is you were right first time - he's hull down and probably almost full defilade. Probably all your ATG can see of him is the nasty long barrel poking over the lip...
4. Did the same thing a few months back and was shocked to see the 'bocage' lining the Tuileries gardens was actually a 10 foot iron fence And they ambushed me from behind that?! Still a great scenario though. And a nice spot for a croissant. Panther's definitely the recommended form of transport, though, with that traffic...
5. Ajax, Ray sent me the 'unpublished' RAVE drivers - they fixed a bunch of transparency glitches for my V3. I'd recommend asking him for them (baboon2@bellatlantic.net).
6. In my most recent PBEM Mech vs Inf attacks I've been experimenting with a 105mm, and I think they're pretty handy. The idea is to hide it until you've sent the troops forward to find his MLR. Your guys get artyed to blazes and find his guns etc. By about turn 20 you should have pushed him back to the houses, but may be running short on ammo to winkle him out. Believe me, he won't be happy to see your 105 unlimbering, but there may well be nothing he can do about it. Several flattened/burning houses later and you too will always want some HE backup. Obviously it's a bit superfluous if you have armour, but they're a nasty surprise in Mechanised attacks.
7. How to get them out of the woods? I recommend arty, or failing that, 75mm HE from your Shermans backed up by an infantry assault with plenty of MG support. The the effective range of Infantry AT weapons depends which end you're on - about 50m and three shots to get a hit that bounces off your enemy stug, or a one shot kill at 200m if it's your last tank driving by the woods
8. I can second what Fate says - the latest alpha RAVE drivers are great. Completely usable as far as I'm concerned. I can't load CM b23 PBEM turns, but I expect this to go away with 1.1. I get the same text dots and 1.05 cursor vanish as well as fog wierdness, but these are nothing to worry about. Ray wins again! 6500/SonnetG3/300 Sys8.6 b12ROM, 1.1.3 drivers plus new RAVE driver.
9. This is great news - thanks Ray I find the same V3 problems as Fate: buildings are invisible in view 4 and fairly transparent even in view 1, likewise flags and, to some extent, bits of hillside. This is the key problem that makes it unworkable, but vehicles also look decidedly peculiar, as many external panels are transparent. I'm using 6500/SonnetG3/300, Sys 8.6, tried b11, 12 and 1.1.2 drivers/roms in all sorts of funny combinations to no avail. I'm currently using 1.1.2 without the RAVE driver Grim
10. Just wanted to add my condolences and say thanks for the CM support you've given. The 1.1.3 drivers from MacGamefiles seem identical to the last release as far as CM with a V3 goes (ie transparency problems). If you had it working I'd sure love to get hold of your drivers! Best of luck with the job hunt.
11. Try Midnight Madness at Prum (allies first) for a winter nightmare - my favourite so far. Elsdorf was also excellent. A Walk in Paris is a must, particularly if you've been there.
12. Please pardon my inadequacies, but... I'd really like a LOS area shading tool. The current LOS line is wonderful, but I spend a lot of time dragging it around all over to get an idea of what I can see (esp in gun placement!) It would be great if it were possible to just select "view" and get the map shaded to show how far he can see, or perhaps dimmed where he can't see. I guess it'd be processor intensive, but by the time CM2 comes out we'll all be using 4GHz P5s anyway
13. Hiram, as far as I know you can't shoot your own guys (unless you misidentify them in the dark) - bodies don't block LOF. So the only thing to worry about is how many men do you want to lose at once when the StuG flattens your house You can fit two squads in one small building, but you have to be careful if you're packing, 'cos they have a nasty tendancy to wander into the open for a breath of fresh air. If you want practice, try First Clash at Cambes as either side - plenty of small-town fighting there.
14. Not just you. Me too. If you look closely at the tanks, you'll see there are some transparency problems with them too. Of course these are RAVE drivers for the V4/5, not the V3, so we should be grateful that they work at all. Just make sure you only play in farmland and it's almost playable... Fortunately Ray has said he's working on the V3 drivers and hopes to have something out by Christmas. Have you been very good this year?
15. DaveF, a guy called Twilight has posted that he has CM running fine with a V3 and the new drivers (check 3dfxgamers.com mac forum). I've tried it and it very, very nearly worked first time (transparency probs). It's close enough that I think a nice clean install and ROM flash of b12 followed by 1.1.2 might do the trick. There were no cursor probs, so apparently no need for the CM update on V3s! I'll let you know if I can get it to go. I have a crummy 6500/L2G3 30, sys 8.6, V3 2000, so if it works for me it should work for anyone! Still crossing my fingers that Ray will give us nice unofficial V3-specific drivers, but.
