1. I hate to say this, but from my experience on the driver teams at ATI & 3dfx, the people with the worst problems with 3D games were those that had upgraded Power Computing machines. Other clones, too, had horrible problems. Part of the problem is that the QA teams at those companies (and Nvidia, too, I bet) don't ever test with upgraded clones. -- Ray
2. You can get the latest RAVE driver (v1.13b6) at http://homepage.mac.com/rayswartz/sites/files/3dfx%20Rave.sit I think you'll see some improvements in CM with a V3.
3. It's Nvidia's fault because they didn't hire me to be their RAVE guy. -- Ray
4. Well, I'll be damned. OTOH, when transparencies go solid, that can be an indication that you are running in software.
5. I'd be very surprised if the RAVE driver for the Voodoo 2 is good enough to run CM. -- Ray
6. Does the smoke look transparent? If so, then you are accelerated. Also, if thin font characters, like "i" look kinda funny, then you are accelerated. CM works much better on the Voodoo 5 than on the Voodoo 3, but the latest drivers are playable with the V3. Fullscreen antialiasing on the V5 looks great in CM. -- Ray
7. Maximus, AFAIK, there are no lockups on Macs using Voodoo cards. So, maybe your negativity is misplaced. -- Ray
8. The ATI Mac 3D engineer is better than any of the ATI PC engineers.
9. Well, neither Nvidia nor Apple has hired me, but I hear that Nvidia does indeed have a RAVE driver. I don't know who wrote it nor do I know how well it performs. I'm curious. -- Ray
10. The reason the control strip doesn't show is that the Voodoo drivers put CM into fullscreen mode for best performance. Fullscreen mode doesn't permit 2D overlays of the draw context.
11. Baboon here. The bug with the ESC key causing scrambled textures was fixed a long time ago. You need the latest drivers, 1.1.3b. And I've got a RAVE driver I can give you that's even better than what's in 1.1.3. You can look forward to CM running quite well on a Voodoo 4.
12. The Voodoo 4 runs CM very well and provides 2x FSAA. The Voodoo 5 provides 4x FSAA. Obviously, at this point I don't care which card you buy, but I do want to say that CM is one game that really benefits from FSAA. I understand that the Radeon drivers will eventually provide it. (I'm the former RAVE guy at 3dfx.)
13. You could put your Voodoo 5 in a Mac. This bug was fixed in the Mac drivers.
14. Rich, have you tried the Napalm drivers (1.1.2 or 1.1.3b)? Don't reflash your ROM -- it's OK.
15.
quote:
Originally posted by Fate: With both the b12 and b13 drivers and rom on a voodoo3, the main problem is structures disappear as you go up in viewing level.

Well, good news there. This one has already been fixed and will be in the next release. When you say "tracers", I take it you mean all ammo trails, or do you mean something else? -- Ray
16. Even though 3dfx is out of business and I am unemployed, there is going to be one more RAVE driver release. This one will provide CM support for the V3. Before I release, I would like a posting here of all Voodoo 3, 4, or 5 Macintosh bugs. Please state your machine info and 3dfx ROM version and driver version. You can also contact me directly at baboon2@bellatlantic.net. -- Ray
17. My understanding is that the Classic Rave "shim" for MacOS X is incomplete. For one thing, it does not support Rave 1.6 features. I hope that will be fixed when X goes final.
18.
quote:
Are the Voodoo drivers described at the site below the new ones you mentioned?

No, they do not contain the latest V3 fixes for CM.
19. The 3dfx Mac Team met yesterday. We all want to release 1.1.3, but we don't yet have clarification if we have the legal right to do so. We should know within the week. -- Ray
20. Thanks. The Mac Team will be meeting early this week to discuss things. I will post what I learn about screen shots. In the last week, I got CM working pretty well on the V3. Obviously, I hope to get permission to release it. -- Ray
21.
quote:
Originally posted by GeoffP: Macintosh is useless to me; you can't play "Grand Prix Legends" with it

Ya got me there
22.
quote:
Originally posted by GeoffP: Is there anybody with a V5 5500 that does NOT have the text/graphics problems when you alt-tab with FSAA running?

Yes. Macintosh V5 5500 users do not have this problem. Our equiv. is the ESC key. Try putting your card in a Mac. -- Ray
23.
quote:
Originally posted by Mord: These problems seem to be across the board for 5500 owners regardless of computer set up, processor and what not.

You might mention that the Mac V5 driver doesn't have this problem. So, it isn't a hardware problem. -- Ray
24. You could put your 5500 into a Mac. That would work. :^}
