  1. I'm not an uber-grog so I wont try to get into an argument of whether on pg xx of this book Beevor misplaced XX Pz Division by 50 miles, but at least IMHO Beevor's Stalingrad, but especially Beevor's Berlin books were very good. I really like his style of writing, and I think he manages very well to capture the flow of events and placement of key units, while still keeping you 'there' as far as a soldiers/refugees/correspondent's/civilians perspective...
  2. Go to the opponent finder forum and enter the chatroom thru the link on the page. Thats how I find most anyone I play, unless I know the person otherwise and set it up independently..
  3. First: The niggle - Im not exactly sure when they figured out about the mute MG nests... Interesting info on it. I was just recently reading a book about the Berlin offensive and it was mentioned... I should hope for their sake that they had figured it out long before hand Second: Steiner Im happy to leave you to whatever mode of play you prefer, but then again since you're going to bring up other peoples freedom to play the game as they please, why are you demanding something that would radically change a game that everyone here loves, and with changes for problems that very few besides you have even deigned to call a problem? By the way you've never played me so dont call my games gamey, and not only that, but it seems the majority here seems to be in disagreement with you, so where exactly do you call a 35-40 minute attack a 'gamey slugfest'?
  4. I agree. Steiner YOU'RE wrong! Na Na na naaaaaaaaa haha... Seriously though in 35-40 turn battles there is plenty of time for maneuvering and whatnot. Possibly not on a 'huge' map but I only really play mediums or smalls. As far as reconaissance, goes, many times the only way to find out a lot of enemy positions was by fire. The Soviets noted by the time they attacked Berlin that the Germans had MG nests that fired on most everything, but several that held their fire until it was realized that a true attack was underway. Think like your opponent and imagine where you would put the defenses. Works for me unless I'm playing idiots =P Also, if you have such beef with the system, dont play QBs! If you get a scenario ( a good one at least ) It will set the situation and name landmarks, and intelligence, etc. (I.E. last night, on Hill 234 a German pillbox with an AT gun in it destroyed one of our tanks..) That's your recon and probing right there Steiner, plus info from earlier that day (or the previous day, etc) Dont forget also CM doesnt model prep. arty barrages (not the long 3-4 hour ones, or the major bombardments like before the attack on Seelow Heights) - This has already happened, out of CM's scope. So if that is out of CM's scope, then why should the march, recon, and all that be in it? CM models the company/battalion sized attack on a position, which by the time everything had been built up, would last at the most 1 hour/2 hours, but more likely 30-40 minutes before it was decided, or one of the forces retreated or held off. And finally, if you got what you wanted - and what Im assuming is that you're not just trolling or ranting for no reason without any purpose besides your having a bad day - it wouldnt work! I usually run out of most of my ammo by the end of a 30-40 minute battle, let a lone a 120 turn one unless I have massive forces. And you want 3-4 hour battles??? Are you insane?
  5. Very interesting article... I wonder what condition the German tank/vehicles were in...
  6. Wepps, I just shot you an email, check your inbox and please write me back..
  7. True, but I really do miss the shockwave effects.. those really made the explosions have more oomphf..
  8. Np The higher the level - battalion, brigade, regiment, division, corps, army, etc (did I get it right?) the longer the delay b/c communications delays and whatnot... edited because of language =D [ July 31, 2003, 10:59 PM: Message edited by: Sublime ]
  9. Hmm.. I can only think of a few possible answers: First: Maybe one of them has a radio and the other has a landline? Im not sure if this affects speeds for arty delivery though, and I have a suspicion it may have more to deal with their movement speeds.. Second: Is one of the spotters say.. Battalion level while the other is say, Corps level? That would have a definite effect. Third:Are you sure both spotters had targets that were in LoS?
  10. I like tank hunter teams, or snipers for recon, and liberal sprinklin of TRPs, with a couple 150mm FO's with radios =D
  11. They are really effective... but They still get whacked if you or your opponent knows what they're doin. With mortar fire or fire from a tank, they dont last long..
  12. How much ammunition did both sides have left when the battle ended?
  13. I see your point about mounting it on H/T's but what do you mean by the Germans being on the defensive most of the time..? That's true in the CMBO context, but for about half of the war the Germans were mostly on the offense. What Im really interested in knowing is the lack of a MG on early variants of StuGs.. (something you West Front jockeys dont have to worry about..) Im amazed that with turreted tanks it took so long for people to see the use of a flexible MG mount on most tanks, and while I can see maybe the StuG III B or even E variant having no machine gun, by 1942 the experiences of German troops in Russia make the lack of a machine gun (even if only one!) on the StuG III F, and III F/8 are unforgiveable in my opinion....
  14. The Fall of Berlin 1945 by Beevor is also an incredibly good book..
  15. I was intrigued by this thread and played Cemetary Hill yesterday blind as Axis vs AI +3 experience... I advanced a recon platoon to the woods on the right flank of the woods and go across, with the other recce platoon covering w/ half tracks, 50mm mortars, the IG, the SPW 251/10, I kept the pioneers back to figure out if I could reach the woods across the road. The half track got popped by one of the 45mm atgs early, and my overwatch troops did a fair job of keepin the enemies head down. I got the engineers acrossed and used the recon platoon to see the possibility of heading down the road, since the houses seemed unoccupied and turn the enemies flank on the trenches. This didnt work out so well, as there were minefields and heavy fire from the cemetary area. I moved my engineers further past the wood to try a move from the wheatfield but they got annihilated. I laid a smoke barrage and opened fire and charged my remaining recon platoon into the trenchline, which they took a portion of with severe losses, but stopped then as further assault until reinforcement would be pointless. I got a tactical defeat, I thought it was a good battle, though maybe the Soviets have a bit too much equipment...?
  16. Ah... Play Biltongs campaign rules and you'll see things differently my jaded commander amigos... The overall mission is more important sometimes.. and sometimes not. Play as if this is your command and reinforcements are iffy, and I've noticed I usually do better actually, though sometimes you just have to take a defeat to preserve the integrity of your formation. Its more realistic too, if you were somewhere in Stalingrad, would you lose your last 50 troops in a desperate last ditch assault to storm the factory? What are you going to do when the night falls and you and your 18 man group are left to hold the factory?
  17. Well... Ill try to answer this one. Covered arcs are great. You let your troops keep their eyes open but can keep em from blastin away uselessly at targets 400 meters away. Now, it encourages them to open fire on targets in their covered arc, because damn it, if somethings in it, you can be sure they'll shoot at it. If a unit has no orders they may not be shootin at something they can see. If its in the arc, they'll try to pop it.
  18. You cant for a QB, you can only get mixes like that in scenarios. Im sure theres some way you can do it actually, by importing forces or some sort of trick, but generally, you cant.
  19. Im interested, and I'd be willing to play... Email me at funnyhaha@comcast.net
  20. I dont want to sound like a dick but this has to be the stupidest question I've ever seen posted since fall of 99.
