  1. You better get used to it. I also noticed the AI shockingly attack both a PZ IV in one run through and then a Panther when I played a battle again later with a 60mm mortar. Whats even more shocking is that the attacks suceeded in immobilizing the respective tanks on both occasions! The ground condition during this campaign is 'wet'. You'd be advised to drive your tanks everywhere on 'slow'. even the roads.
  2. Yeah, I got beaten to it but - Childress the buildings you see are like aircraft hangers or something. When I played that battle I noticed it too. Its really just modelling a big open bay hanger or somefink. FWIW I dont think the buildings are that bad - you just have to do a lil work making sure theres doors and whatnot.
  3. Id be very wary of assuming the firepower ratings in CMx1 are the same. There was a lot of abstraction in CMx1 - it was 12 years ago, there had to be. Every round's trajectory is supposed to be modelled in CMBN, which changes things quite a bit. Also on the US vs German squads, the Garands do help quite a bit. I give you that. However, my experience with CMBN has also shown me that US squads seem to be at a big disadvantage with the BAR being their squad LMG. It just doesnt stand up IMHO to MG42s or even the Browning .30 cal. When I have US Airborne troops every LMG team I get with a BAR instead of the 1919A4 I feel like I got cheated on. Now the 1919A4, I can dig it. Too bad they never tried putting two of those in every US squad.
  4. Yeah, FO's definitely have some sort of influence on it. I also noticed that higher ranking officers seem to get faster deliveries too.
  5. The US doesnt necessarily have an advantage because of the garand. I prefer having the 2 MG42s in a squad myself. The US has large squads manpower wise though, with above average equipment and thats a definite strength. The best way to really know what squads to choose is to be somewhat familiar with the weaponry at hand. You could always just play it out and pay close to attention to what units have what as well..
  6. Ive also noticed that often I get artillery delivery times of 7-8 minutes away and I order in the strike anyways. More often than not Im pleasantly suprised by a FFE 2-4 minutes earlier than the readout on the UI. Again it varies wildly, but this early delivery of 'the goods' seems to happen quite a bit when its smaller caliber off board assets - 105mm, 120mm, etc.
  7. Definitely after the July 20th assasination attempt. Making the fuhrer salute mandatory and having 'political officers' assigned to military units ensured all sorts of rhetoric was flying around. Whether or not it was actually applied to tactics often depended on the commanders however.
  8. FWIW I've noticed Pumas and other Werhmacht armored cars do reverse pretty quickly.
  9. To be fair - to call tanks masters of urban combat in this is an extreme, extreme stretch. For one my tanks get plastered all the time without it being in urban combat. I have not seen this 'borg spotting' your reffering to with the tanks seeing infantry, if anything they seem to be pretty realistic - blind as bats unless unbottoned generally. The gun traverse has been explained already. The smoke mortars when threatened - I dont think they're overly modelled either. To be fair IDK if Shermans had the Nahverteidigungswaffe the German heavy cats have but still.. As far as the MG bursts - coax MGs are indeed more heavy duty than regular machine guns, and Im pretty sure can fire for more extended periods. If anything the ability to carry a stable mount, huge amounts of ammo, and coolant for the MGs on a tank.. ? I agree the robotic bursts are annoying on the MGs, especially on HMGs that should be putting out streams of lead. But theres only so much the game designers can do. Dont take this the wrong way man, Ive read a lot of your posts I know you're not trolling and you're a intelligent enuff guy, Im just wondering if this is a result of a really bad day or a fluke situation?
  10. I think if youre hiding soldiers dont do buddy aid?
  11. And with that I have to put in my final point about the Panzers Marsch campaign. Whether you drive home your attacks or conserve your men - you're heading for disaster. Non fanatic German officers at the time, and almost anyone with a grasp of the history of the Battle for Normandy knows any German counterattack is doomed to get plastered with fire, if not immediately then soon. The best advice is try to slog through so your objectives are met so your families arent victims of the 'Sippenhaft' and save as many of your soldiers as possible for the defense of the Reich!
  12. In regards to 'blasting the objective' or 'blasting a path through the objective' I notice players often overestimate the strength of off-board artillery. For me to really consider an area I've shelled to be 'dead' Ive come to expect at least a 'heavy/medium 81mm mortar strike on a point or small linear target. For buildings it has to be the same on 120mm. But if I REALLY want to be sure - 120mm or higher and if its a large area it needs to be 150mm or up. 60mms, 81mms, and even 120mms really are better for target specific strikes and dont do as well for destruction by area. (which is what you're working with if you're doing pre-planned attacks) There is an art to preplanned arty in the attack, and in this game with the new arty system it becomes important, at least in my method of play. (btw I play rt/warrior setting) As far as arty in the defense, you want a happy medium. So far in BN unless you are using DF I find that things in the 120mm range are an excellent bet. For US forces this translates to 105mm fire. 155mm US fire rocks, but the delay is rough for a fluid defensive enviroment. And for Werhmacht defense TRPs can really make it or break it, especially with 120mm mortars, as they can have slow response times. Ive also noticed that though arty is obviously very lethal, I always need to plaster it on a little longer than what I always 'feel' is enough, to really kill or put out of action what Im shooting at.
  13. Actually I only got this wealth of experience because I play CMBN too much. When I play campaigns I dont do reloads or anything, I take my casualties as is etc etc. Unless I lose the campaign. Then I refight the whole battle. All this experience comes from playing Road to Montebourg 3 times, and Panzers Marsch 3 times. It helped there was no other German campaigns. I prefer campaigns GREATLY to other modes of play...
  14. What I do is leave the vehicles in place. I have all the crews dismount. I select one crew with one soldier to hit the VL spots. But the rest of the troops I take on the on the right, (if you're facing the american lines, using the road bisecting them in half) cross the road that runs along the front, and have them creep up the hedge bordering the big field in front of the farm. With short cover arcs they eventually spot a lot of American infantry. Then I have them open fire, kill some Ami's and run for it. Also useful because you see their front lines - which get airburst 150mm next morning
  15. I must have missed that. Damn Im disappointed it doesnt make more of a difference. I was hoping it'd be a game changer like how people put low walls by buildings. Oh well.
  16. Hey SteveP - speaking of realistic bocage combat have you tried using the trick LemuelG posted about? e.g. placing trenches/foxholes and then placing bocage over them? it adds cover to the positions and looks ok - it makes for more realistic defended positions for bocage fighting..
  17. HMG crews can fire the MG undeployed. you'll see it as 'semi deployed' and you'll notice their bursts are much more inaccurate, you can even notice the tracers begin to climb with recoil. I've seen many pictures or film of MG42s being fire planted on someones shoulder. Especially the famous footage from market garden (you can also see a kid firing on propped up boxes that are wobbly) I expect it was done a good number of times...
  18. AT teams WILL NOT fire zooks/shrecks/fausts from inside a building. The backblast would kill friendlies. Sometimes my troops inexiplicably hesitate to fire. I dnt know why it happens, it just seems to. However as mentioned above theres so many variables - suppression, experience, morale state, fatigue, C2, etc etc
  19. would you consider applying this talent you have for scenario making and just put it into a campaign? you'd already have three scenarios. charlie company would be a good unit to use, its the perfect size for a campaign unit..
  20. Also now I've noticed that this mission for me seems to crash every time i load this battle only. I have a suspicion this is somehow just this saved game. Ive encountered this problem before with a few battles on this or in CMSF. Im not sure what the problem is, I tried loading and making a new saved game. Also Im running on a Toshiba Satelite laptop. 1.6 Ghz processor, 200 gb hard drive, 4 gb ram... raytheon video card i cant remember how much memory that has off the top of my head..
  21. Hey, Im playing Panzers Marsch for the 3rd time (COME ON - NEED A NEW GERMAN CAMPAIGN GUYS!!) and at the start of the 3rd mission Ive come across what may be a bug. The third half track in my column, has an HQ unit thats sposed to be riding in it. When I start the mission, in the deployment phase, the HT is listed as dismounted even though the HQ unit is in it, or at least on the same spot. When I click on the HQ unit and actually have him mount the HT the game freezes, then crashes. This is on realtime, warrior setting. I have a saved game...
  22. he must mean rd. the montebourg. +1 to new campaigns ESPECIALLY GERMAN CAMPAIGNS
  23. AND waffen SS, maybe FJ troops as well. I hope we get the good ol gebirgsjaegers back for the third module.
  24. Fantastic! Once I heard you mention this campaign with the 116th PD (if I remember correctly) around the time you released Devils Descent and were getting your initial reactions to it. I definitely prefer playing campaigns and I've always had a soft spot for playing the German side all the way back to Aces of the Deep, Aces Over Europe, Panzer General, Close Combat 1-3(after that it sucked. hard) and of course with the Combat Mission series. I play the Allies a lot but I have to confess CMBN is the first WW2 game where Ive played as the Americans quite a bit more than as the Germans - at least initially. I've really come to appreciate a lot of the US weapons - 60mm mortars, .50 cal MGs, Shermans (!) etc etc. But I miss playing the Germans. and Im tired of playing the one German campaign I have. So please. Send me the German campaign.
