  1. I liked the two 90mm recoilless rifles I had in my combat engineer platoon. They made more noise at the firing line than at the receiving end. You could get a nosebeleed just being nearby when they fired. "Backblast Area Clear!" was no joke. But that was back in the '80s and we never got to use them against real targets. Anyone here have any operational experience with the US 90mm RR?

  3. Thanks Mystro, I think that driver/Catalyst version is still available on the ATI web site. I'll give it a try tonight. Spiny
  4. Hi PrezCartman, I'm running a Radeaon X800GT 128 MB on an XP SP2 Intel 3.6 GHz machine and I can't get the program to work. It starts, I get to a black screen with a green mouse pointer, and then the monitor shuts off and I need to reboot the computer. So, what settings are you running for your card? I thought my card was too old to work, but now you're the second person with an ATI X800 type card to say it works fine for them. Thanks. Spiny
  5. Hi Mystro, Like Rune said, what settings and drivers are you using? I have a three year old Radeon ATI X800GT card. I downloaded and installed the 7.7 Catalyst driver. XP SP2. The game tries to start, I get a green mouse pointer, and then my monitor shuts off and I need to manually reboot my computer. I'm planning to replace the video card, but I'd like to at least see the game now even if I get poor performance from my old card. So, what settings are you using? Spiny
  6. lighten up I was only having a bit of fun, obviously BF will release when it suits them regardless of our pleading, and rightly so. I bet you don't shake the presents under the tree at christmas do you And I was having a little fun myself, enjoying the fracas by being the voice of calm reason among all the more excitable types. I do it to drive my wife nuts too, including with the presents.
  7. well fingers crossed it wasn't just swedish momma's and pappa's and I can download soon </font>
  8. We had a MICLIC one time that severed it's attaching cable and just ended up in one big heap downrange. Of course, that meant that the detonating circuit was also severed. Very inconvenient. Not wanting to send someone out there where he might get hurt, we detonated it by firing a .50 cal with tracers into it from a CEV. It took quite a few hits and it was burning merrily before the magic bullet finally did the trick and detonated it. We were in Iraq, but fortunately it was a training situation, not an actual breach attempt.
  9. I have pictures of MICLICs going off running through my head. Now that would be exciting. Unfortunately, a MICLIC is so big, given its 2,000 lb C4 charge, that it might overwhelm the map. But, gosh it would be fun.
  10. Here's another low member number, lurking in the underbrush, waiting for morsels of information.
  11. "Post a location in your profile." "Don't use smilies." You guys are fond of your rules. I suppose it's important to find something in life to give you a sense of stability and meaning when you run into presumptuous SSNs. In a way I am disappointed. I figured that given the moose angle, you guys would have been able to come up with tons of good abuse. I mean, wasn't that a low hanging fruit, over ripe for you to pick and throw at the unsuspecting SSN? Or perhaps you guys have been falling asleep counting sheep so long that your imaginations can't contain the thought of a better animal. Or, instead of jumping on the Noob with the hokey moose song, you could post another song to top it. Now that would mean something. Spiny recklessly continues to post smilies, heedless of the consequences.
  12. I suppose I am a Noob on the Peng threads. But, I've chuckled over them as a lurker long enough to know what to expect if I ever posted to one. And you guys haven't let me down. I just can't help but notice that, even though you were supposed to ignore me, you chose to have a little fun responding to me anyway.
  13. Ah, yes. The Granite State. Old New Hampshire. The song brings tears of joy and pride to my eyes. Thanks, Nidan. Bored? I'm sorry to hear that.
  14. Sigh... I bring you guys a cool song about moose and what I get in return is abuse. How about posting some more songs instead? I'm sure there are plenty out there.
  15. You mentioned another Heroic National Guardsman? Where? Is he a SSN? Wait, an Officer is he? Too bad, I thought the class of folks in this joint was improving for a second, guess not. [/QB]
  16. Oh, and Lars is from MN. Another place blessed with the presence of moose. You are most fortunate. And it's not the yahoo part that holds the clue.
  17. Ooh, ooh, guessing games from SSNs, I just love them.... Perhaps you should just "die" then..... Oh, admit it. You enjoyed the moose song. Even if I didn't jump to modify my profile and I gave you a guessing game that you didn't like. Oh, and here's another chance for someone to get out the abuse flinging trebuchet: what does "SSN" stand for?
  18. That's "Spiny", as in what real men have in their backs. "Spinny" is what real men do when they see an attractive moose, as in "He saw a cute moose out of the corner of his eye and he done spinnied head around to check it out." Turn your head with a flip? What, so your curls bounce? How attractive. But I bet you aren't covered in dark brown hair, so I'm not interested. My location? You may want to look over your shoulder. And keep a lookout for Tero as well, his profile doesn't share his whereabouts either. My email address may give some clue as to where I'm from. If you have the wit to figure it out. You won't catch me looking at mere sheep with you or Mace. Moose are what I want. And another clue on where I'm from: I did have a real live moose out between my front door and the horse paddock over the weekend. (Too bad he's male. The females are sooooo much sweeter.) So, where in the world (besides in the opening credits to MP's Holy Grail) can you find such lovely creatures?
  19. Chorus: Then its moose, moose, I want a moose. I have never had anything quite like a moose. I've had many women, me life has been loose, But I've never had anything quite like a moose. Song: At the end of a dusty day walking my post, I dream of those pleasures I fancy the most, And to lure the great beasty I'll play my kazoo, Cause a Moose in the boots is worth ten in the zoo. Chorus The Royal Kings Rangers are strange it is said, They all grab a lamb when they crawl into bed, They moan and they bleat and they roll on the ground, We don't settle for lambchops when Moose are around. Chorus Bears are quite nice on a cold winters night, Coyotes and Bobcats will put up a fight, But there's no greater joy and it is the truth, Than when I grab ahold of a big sexy Moose. Chorus When I was a young lad I used to like girls, I played with their bodies and fondled their curls. Till my girl ran off with a Captain named Bruce. Oh you'll never get treated like that by a moose! Chorus When I'm in the mood for a good lay, I go to the closet and get me some hay. I open the window and spread it around, Cause the moose always come when there's hay on the ground! Chorus A fun little ditty from pre-revolutionary war America. There are, of course, many more verses. Picture Roger's Rangers around the campfire...
  20. A I've played CMx1 against the AI or TCP/IP on my home network against my kids many more times than in a PBEM. Still, losing PBEM would be a great loss.
  21. I'm sitting here, in uniform, with a 3AD patch on my right shoulder. Maybe I'll try this scenario out. SPEARHEAD Spiny Mouse, Out.
  22. - 5.1 sound so you can hear what's behind you as well as to the sides. - Sound echoes. The sounds of explosions and gunshots have a clear echo off of hillsides etc. - The sound of shells in flight. That "freight train" sound is real. When artillery rounds pass overhead or to the side, you can clearly hear the sound of the shell in the air. - Small arms ricochets. Anyone who has ever fired tracers at night remembers the show as the tracers ricochet and head into the sky. - Tweak the fire parameter so that wildland and structure fires happen more easily. I've inadvertently started fires with tracers and with signal flares on several occasions. - Signal flares such as star clusters of various colors. Eye candy admittedly, but they are a form of small unit signalling that has been used for a long time. - Parachute, illumination flares can light up your life. All probably mentioned before, but what the hell, why not mention it again? Spiny
  23. Cool. Somone else out there likes Turtledove's work. Gotta respect any author who can turn a hokey premise into a seriously good story.
  24. Yes. WWI is sorely under represented in gaming and current literature. Lots of interesting stuff happened in that war. In many ways it was more horrible than WWII. Does a WWI CM have commercial appeal? That's the question.
  25. Some thoughts from the serious to the light hearted. - Occasional civilians getting in the way (to their utter misfortune)? - Smaller terrain elements (10m instead of 20m)? - Ability to print an overhead copy of any map in a format that resembles a military style map? At scales typical of military maps (1:50,000 or 1:25,000)? - Changing weather? Passing thunderstorms? - Let the game clock actually advance the time of day, i.e. dawn becomes day over the course of an hour long battle? Or dusk becomes night? - Stray dogs and farm animals (no, not those explosive laden unfortunates, just a simple stray)? - Mechanical breakdowns to hamper your armored attacks? Ah, the frustration... - Rubbled buildings block streets? - Rework the map design interface to allow easier scrolling? - Add scroll bars to the equipment/unit selection screen rather than just the page turning buttons currently available?
