  1. At least there is no borg spotting anymore. Combine onboard mortars (in CM:BO) that could only direct fire, the AI's desire to seemingly kill mortars above all else, and borg spotting and mortars had a hard time surviving. Despite that, I really liked them if you could get them into position to lay down 3-4 minutes of fire at the right time.

  2. I think if you want more control than 1 minute turns allow (and the lack of control was a huge selling point for me. Watching turns over and over again was awesome), you might as well play real-time.

One-minute, for me, is short enough. Especially considering that less happens in one turn than in CMx1. It was maddening and tense in CMx1 when the action was thick and there was no way to stop the chaos.

  3. I think in a perfect world as a consumer, the demo would be released on a Monday and the game on a Friday.

However, this isn't so bad. An entire weekend to play through 3 scenarios and get our feet wet and get familiar with the game/controls (especially for those of us who never played CMSF) is good.

We lasted, what, 6 months on the CM:BO beta demo alone? I played the two CM:BO demos for longer than I played the actual game.

  4. Given how important C2 is and how much more difficult it is to maintain in WWII, I am hoping there is an easier way to keep track of it in future games. The lines in CMx1 were very useful.

However, I do like that I can click on unit names in the C2 chain window-thing and the game jumps to them.

  5. I played CMx1 at what I think was view angle 4. Basically the units are all small dots. Not a big deal in that game as the infantry were only moderately detailed and you could make them large size anyway if you wanted to see them.

The models in CM:BN are so nice I wish I had multiple large screens so I could zoom in more and still see the battlefield. Even 30" and 2560x1600 isn't enough.

  6. I decided to play the bocage demo scenario from the German side after winning from the American side (good win aside from high casualties).

The Germans just don't have a lot to work with. I was down to one AT team with any kind of ammunition. A lone survivor of a panzerschreck team with one round left, clueless Sherman bearing down on him. He uses everything he has to fight off the Yankee beast!

Filmed in gritty, hand-held style because I don't have FRAPS.

  7. Use left-click-drag to move the camera, right-click-drag to pan.

Thanks. That's a little better. Unfortunately the screen response is the exact opposite of what I expect. Clicking and moving the mouse towards you (towards the bottom of the screen) has the effect of making the map move away from you. It's not dragging it's repelling.

  8. Same obnoxious controls for moving around the map that made me stop playing the CM:SF demo after one scenario.

If you have a large screen, waving the mouse all over it is a pain and the keyboard controls are awful (I'm left-handed). After wanting to kill myself from playing the CM:SF demo, I've been playing CM:BO for the past week and, despite not playing the game in 10.5 years, I found the controls much better to work with.

The on-screen arrows from CMx1 are gone with mouse control replaced by having to wave your mouse all over the screen. And the keyboard controls don't seem to be synched. What I mean is that the screen rotates quickly but moves side to side slowly. What a mess.

Can't say I'm happy to see CM:BN with the same controls as CM:SF.

Also, I can't play in windowed mode, so lots of alt-tabbing nonsense.

  9. It was the original intro video for CMBO, comes with the game. A wonderful mood setter at the time - this was when most people still had dial-ups and video-sharing services like YouTube didn't even exist.

Wow. Goes to show that it's been a long time since I've played CM:BO. Who was it who made the B&W videos with the voice-overs, then?
