  1. I'd go for unit scaling coming back. The infantry unit graphics are so nice, but I can only really appreciate them so zoomed in that it isn't conducive to seeing what happened in the rest of
  2. At least there is no borg spotting anymore. Combine onboard mortars (in CM:BO) that could only direct fire, the AI's desire to seemingly kill mortars above all else, and borg spotting and mortars had a hard time surviving. Despite that, I really liked them if you could get them into position to lay down 3-4 minutes of fire at the right time.
  3. I think if you want more control than 1 minute turns allow (and the lack of control was a huge selling point for me. Watching turns over and over again was awesome), you might as well play real-time. One-minute, for me, is short enough. Especially considering that less happens in one turn than in CMx1. It was maddening and tense in CMx1 when the action was thick and there was no way to stop the chaos.
  4. I'm much more impressed with the power of the 60mm mortar in CM:BN compared with CM:BO. Partly, I think it's that HQs couldn't spot for onboard mortars in CM:BO and partly it just seems that artillery is much more deadly.
  5. I think in a perfect world as a consumer, the demo would be released on a Monday and the game on a Friday. However, this isn't so bad. An entire weekend to play through 3 scenarios and get our feet wet and get familiar with the game/controls (especially for those of us who never played CMSF) is good. We lasted, what, 6 months on the CM:BO beta demo alone? I played the two CM:BO demos for longer than I played the actual game.
  6. Given how important C2 is and how much more difficult it is to maintain in WWII, I am hoping there is an easier way to keep track of it in future games. The lines in CMx1 were very useful. However, I do like that I can click on unit names in the C2 chain window-thing and the game jumps to them.
  7. I played CMx1 at what I think was view angle 4. Basically the units are all small dots. Not a big deal in that game as the infantry were only moderately detailed and you could make them large size anyway if you wanted to see them. The models in CM:BN are so nice I wish I had multiple large screens so I could zoom in more and still see the battlefield. Even 30" and 2560x1600 isn't enough.
  8. The breach the tank drives through in the video was caused by the self-same tank backing up through the hedgerow. I would think it would only be possible to breach a hedgerow from the front.
  9. I upgrade monitors so rarely (1992, 2000, and 2010) that I figure it's one area that's worth splurging on. I did have 3 24" monitors in portrait mode. Came out to be a 42" monitor at 3600x1920 but it was a bit overwhelming to look at. So I gave two to my wife, kept one, and bought a 30" monitor. Best upgrade I ever made.
  10. I decided to play the bocage demo scenario from the German side after winning from the American side (good win aside from high casualties). The Germans just don't have a lot to work with. I was down to one AT team with any kind of ammunition. A lone survivor of a panzerschreck team with one round left, clueless Sherman bearing down on him. He uses everything he has to fight off the Yankee beast! Filmed in gritty, hand-held style because I don't have FRAPS. [Changed the url from and uploaded a new video so you can see more of the hurt put on the crew]
  11. Thanks. That's a little better. Unfortunately the screen response is the exact opposite of what I expect. Clicking and moving the mouse towards you (towards the bottom of the screen) has the effect of making the map move away from you. It's not dragging it's repelling.
  12. Same obnoxious controls for moving around the map that made me stop playing the CM:SF demo after one scenario. If you have a large screen, waving the mouse all over it is a pain and the keyboard controls are awful (I'm left-handed). After wanting to kill myself from playing the CM:SF demo, I've been playing CM:BO for the past week and, despite not playing the game in 10.5 years, I found the controls much better to work with. The on-screen arrows from CMx1 are gone with mouse control replaced by having to wave your mouse all over the screen. And the keyboard controls don't seem to be synched. What I mean is that the screen rotates quickly but moves side to side slowly. What a mess. Can't say I'm happy to see CM:BN with the same controls as CM:SF. Also, I can't play in windowed mode, so lots of alt-tabbing nonsense.
  13. Now people can say BFC has a German bias.
  14. LOL... wonder if more people are downloading it now. My download speed is sinking rapidly. Happy playing to those who can play tonight/this morning!!!
  15. Indeed, the English link is broken. Unfortunate as it downloaded 4x faster than the German link for me.
  16. just as i'm going to bed. cruel. so cruel. On the other hand, the demo took 2 minutes to download.
  17. I'd have given you bonus troll points if you had linked to a download of the beta demo. Still have that on my hard drive dated 10/27/1999. Must have been 4 hard drives ago.
  18. Not perfect? You are dead to me. The best thing about this forum is seeing the way grown men can act. Teenage girls ain't got nothing on us.
  19. That's my guess. They specifically mention two platoons (I think the 1st was the other) changing to SP. After combat in Saarlautern, they specifically mention getting replacement M36 TDs to replace two that were knocked out. It also seems they did as much indirect fire support as direct fire.
  20. Thanks. Apparently I never downloaded any patch after 1.05. It was ftp, like you mentioned. Opera doesn't like it, either. But Internet Explorer worked.
  21. I know they like it, but I took one look at it and laughed it looked so silly.
  22. While waiting for CM:BN, I decided to play some CM:BO. My version is 1.05 and I tried to download patch 1.12, but the link is broken.
  23. I'll go further and state that if you don't play CM:BN as an RTS but rather as We-Go you can get by with a far lesser system than in other games. During the playback of the turn you can't do anything other than watch, anyway, so high FPS is not of critical importance.
  24. The 6800 and X850 are ancient video cards from 2004-2005. They were, however, top-of-the-line at the time. The implication of saying 6800 or X850 to me is that the game is only a DX 9 game and that you could get by with a Radeon 5570 for about $50-60.
  25. Wow. Goes to show that it's been a long time since I've played CM:BO. Who was it who made the B&W videos with the voice-overs, then?
