    crews

Years ago I played a game called Squad Leader, perhaps some of you out there know of it. Great game. Anyway, one thing you had to do in that game, if a tank was hit, was roll to see if the crew survived. I've wondered why crews never survive in TacOps. Then, throughout all of this discussion about depleted uranium, I heard a description of what happens to a vehicle when it is hit by one of these warheads. Sounds like it would pretty much take care of anyone in the vehicle. Of course troops in APCs sometimes survive in TacOps. Are crews too negligible a force to be considered?
  2. I had a lot of trouble with Fenwick. Seems you have to use snipers and arty to take out the SAMs, then bring in the copters. Can't be in too big a hurry to bring em in. I have a question. When I bring copters in and they land on the ground they get nailed. Other times I leave the copters in the air but give a delayed unload order. Does this have the troops coming down on ropes? Copter survival was much better using the latter technique. Oh yes, and lots of smoke. ------------------

    Air Support Scouts?

I've used this tactic before, more often when I am on the defensive and want to know where the OPFOR is headed. It seems reasonable when you know that the SAMs have not "spilled out". Sending them to a SAM infested areas does not seem reasonable. Helicopter are juicy targest for SAMs. I have had a hard time judging where I can use my Apaches and not have them in danger from SAMs. It seems that nape of the earth should protect them from distant SAMs.
  4. I've thought of a scenario comparable to this one. Here's how it goes. An OPFOR mechanized unit is spotted moving toward an important, yet relatively undefended area. A comparable force cannot be brought up for some time, so an air-mobile unit is used to delay the OPFOR advance. I envision using infantry brought in via copter and a bunch of air support to keep a certain percentage of the OPFOR force from exiting. Is there a TacOps scenario that does this? Does it sound realistic?
  5. Very helpful indeed! My use of arty up to this point has been rather haphazard. Re. the trenches, my guys were rather bunched up. Relatively few OPFOR troops, and arty, were able to put some serious losses on my guys. Re. Fenwick, I don't think I have given the snipers enough time to do their job. I get in a hurry to get the copters in and end up losing several. Do you guys think it's better to land right in the center or off to the side and "walk" in? The time I did the latter seemed to take too much time, and I lost too many guys before I got to the buildings.
  6. Thanks for the information on Team Murray. My fifth attempt was foiled. I could not get all of the OPFOR infantry out of the entrenchments. My guys were toe-to-toe with the entrenched OPFOR while OPFOR arty is raining down hammering me and having little impact on the guys in the trenches. There is nothing worse than a direct ICM hit on your infantry. At that point I wasn't using my own arty because my guys were so close. I have to learn the finer points of arty. I don't know what you mean by work the TRPs until they are a 5. I'll check the manual. Re. Team Krempp?, I was successful my first, and only attempt. I must have gotten lucky. TF Fenwick? What a disaster! I can see why dropping some cruise missiles might be a better option.

    Attrition

I'm going to reactivate the Attrit file. Does anyone have any advice on Team Murray? After four attempts I have yet to crack that nut and each time I have had serious attrit. In all my runs OPFOR has thermals and advanced weaponary. In the last run I managed to get all my units into the woods without any losses but couldn't clear it out.

    Attrition

Thanks for all of the information. I am approximately 40 minutes into TF Gallagher-1 right now and will see if I can get to the 1:1 ratio. With some scenarios I have attempted to retreat after being beat-up only to be beat-up some more because of the belated nature of the retreat. I have a lot to learn. ------------------

    Attrition

I have never been in the military and have a question for the all the military folks out there. Is there some acceptable level of attrition and beyond that you simply call off the operation? I guess it depends on the importance of the objective. I am new to TacOps and have won a few and lost a few. I have mostly run the "team" scenarios so far. It is not uncommon for me to have 50% or greater attrition. Perhaps I am just a rookie. I have set the OPFOR for thermal sights in all my runs, I don't imagine that helps. ------------------
