1. I'd say one in ten as well. Sometimes CMBN crashes to desktop on saving.
2. Ye, just started playing my first game, tried to load it and the game crashed. Same happens when I try load the autosave.
3. Do you even need to click on the circle? I thought once you've set an unload point, you can select a unit on the transport, click anywhere on the island you're unloading to, and the unit will automatically route via the unload point.
4. Great game, I played the original Empire plenty, and this captures the flavour and then some. Some suggestions: How about when setting up repeat orders, there's some way to see what has been done before. I like to have a few planes flying patrols to check for oncoming transports, and when I'm setting up the patrol orders it would be nice to see where other patrols are already going. Linked rally points: If you set an air rally point from town A to town B, then from B to C, a plane produced in A should fly to C via B without further orders. It's good to produce planes in the rear areas and fly them to the front because they get their quickly, but this can be multiple hops. In theory you could do the same with ship and land rally points, although there would seem to be much less need.
5. The folder was set to read only. So I unchecked that option and tried installing the patch. But I got the same error message, and when I went and looked again, the folder was back to being read only.
6. Tried renaming the 1.1 exe file before patching, that didn't solve the problem, still got the same error message.
7. Also running XP, on an AMD Athlon 2100+ 1.73 Ghz. Let me know if there's any other info that will be of help.
8. Yep, I'm just letting it install into the default C:\Program Files\Battlefront\Combat Mission Shock Force directory. It deletes the 1.10 exe, and then throws up the error message, so I have to reinstall the game to get it back to 1.10. Looks like Hev has the same problem that I do.
9. I updated to the 1.10 Battlefront patch, but when I tried to install the 1.11 patch, I got the following message when installing the file CM Shock Force.exe: An error occurred while trying to rename a file in the destination directory: MoveFile failed; code 2. The system cannot find the file specified. If I abort the installation, the file is now missing and the program won't load at all.
10. Some of these may have been mentioned before, but I just don't have the time anymore to keep up with the Battlefront forums like I did in the days of CMBO. After a couple of tries of the game, here's a couple of things that jumped right out at me that I'd like to see: The ability to pause in elite mode. I want the most realistic spotting and C2 effects, but want to be able to pause to give orders. Why can't I have both? If people don't want the ability to pause, allow them to turn off just that option. I'd prefer to use WEGO, but in its current state I don't see the point. All movement orders shown. This has been said before, but it's so important I thought I'd repeat it. Being able to adjust already placed orders. Not sure if this is possible, if it is please enlighten me. Some sort of self-preservation TAC AI for the units. That way I won't have to micromanage them to stop them doing really stupid things like sitting in the open watching yet another ATGM fly at them. The ability to set a cover arc for only vehicles. I moved an RPG team from one side of the building to another, where it would be 20 metres away from the rear of a couple of Strykers. But the non-RPG toting guy gets there first and starts blazing away with his AK-47 to no effect, alerting the Strykers to their danger and letting them turn their guns on the building. I pre-ordered this, just like I pre-ordered all the previous versions of CM, and I must say this is the first one to leave me feeling disappointed. But from past experience I'm sure Battlefront will come through on this. Will probably shelve it though until I see what the patches bring.
11. In a game I'm currently playing I got tech 1 German fighters on the first turn I put a point into it. And it's TCP/IP so I can't be cheating. I guess it happens sometimes.
12. Well, I'd say yes, very gamey if I was hugging the left or right side of the map to give myself an invulnerable flank. But on the rear edge? I will consider myself to have learnt a valuable lesson at the low cost of just one AWOL Sherman. And for others reading this thread, it's a valuable lesson free of charge.
13. First of all, I haven't posted on this forum since late 2000, so forgive my complete lack of knowledge of all posts, Peng threads, Waffles and in-forum feuds that have no doubt developed since then. My only excuse is that right at the start of 2001 an unfortunate event happened to me - I got a job that required me to actually do some work. So I'm playing this CMAK game, right, and I have some tanks near the back edge of the map who need to scoot along said edge to new and exciting firing positions. So I draw nice "fast move" lines, with the tanks supposed to follow each other in a neat single file. But one tank commander is a bit slow to get moving, and rather than wait, another tank commander plots a path around him. All this happens during the movie turn, and I watch flabbergasted, that's right, flabbergasted, as the second tank just drives off the back of the map. I assume his replot happened to go right off the map. I guess it's vino and women in Rome right now for that guy. Anyone else seen this happen?
14. I'd like a copy of the rules too please. My email is michael.urquhart@virgin.net
15. Well, Wild Bill, I'll add my congratulations, and also my amazement at the size of the Wilder brood. Though guys, who when reading the subject of the post thought Wild Bill was going to share something in CMBB that he found so exciting he couldn't keep it to himself any more, no matter what Madmatt would do to him afterwards.
16.
quote:
Originally posted by Amidst_Void: I wonder what flavor Matt's head would be...

Ooh, I think I feel ill.
17. Hey, I remember that Star Trek episode. If I recall correctly, Kirk decides that their version of war is too clean and makes it so that instead of reporting to disintegration chambers when the computer decides your part of the city has been bombed, the city will really be bombed. Kirk seems to think that a taste of real war, with painful injuries and body parts and all that, will make these people seek peace. He obviously wasn't a very keen student of history.
18. Live on Peckham Rye, right opposite the common and just at the bottom of Forest Hill Road. That should be within mortar range.
19. What, Forest Hill is a nest of scenario designers? I live within stone throwing distance of Forest Hill, and I didn't know this. I'll see if I can make it along on Saturday.
20. Just finished reading a book called Dark and Bloody Ground, about the Huertgen Forest, where the author describes a German squad firing four panzerfausts at a Sherman sitting stationary 20 metres away, and missing all with all four. Then some US infantry spotted the Germans, and this knowledge was instantly communicated to the Sherman by the miraculous process known as absolute spotting, and then the Sherman swung its super fast turret...
21.
quote:
Originally posted by Jarmo: As personal weapons go. In "A Bridge too far" there was this officer who wielded an umbrella. Is there any truth behind that one?

There certainly was in the book of the same name by Cornelius Ryan.
22. Correct me if I'm wrong, (which I normally am) but wouldn't any modded mud appear the same on every tank of the same type. To me having a line of Shermans all with an identical mud splash on the left fender would look wierder than having a whole bunch of clean tanks. I first noticed this problem when I played a scenario with about 30 modded MkIVs.
23. I think I'll point my PBEM opponent to this thread, it will make him swear even harder than his already impressive tirade. He started a random purchase attack with three Jagdpanthers and assorted lighter tanks. I started with four 75mm Shermans. He now has one gun damaged Jagdpanther and I have two Shermans. One Sherman got two Jagdpanthers, a Stug, a MkIV and a few halftracks. Those Canadians are pretty rough.
24. Veteran Kangaroos on the defence. Just got 11 of them in a 2000 point game. Ouch. Expensive MG carriers with not enough ammo to be of any use.
25. I've found that the way to avoid shopping or watching chick flicks is to make the experience of making me do either so unpleasant it's not worth it. Highly effective. The moment I walk into a shop I become quite grumpy and brood menacingly in the background. During chick flicks I make constant comments on how unrealistic and crappy the movie is.
