  1. "Panzer Battles" by Von Mellenthin. It talks about battalion level tactics quite a bit. Excellent.
  2. I highly recommend DeanCo's Gunmetal interface mod.
  3. Actually, sloping the armor reduces the amount of plate needed if you keep the tank footprint the same.
  4. I don't understand why game designers still use the IGOYOUGO system. The V for Victory series by 360 used a simultaneous resolution system (similar to CM) about 8-9 years ago. If you want any kind of realism you have to have simultaneous resolution. What gets me is when you read the descriptions of these games at the company websites they never say what kind of combat resolution system they use! If you don't use simlutaneous resolution, why use a computer, just make a board game. But I guess it's cheaper to make a computer game these days.
  5. PanzerBlitz - 1972. I still have it and I can't wait until my son is old enough to play it with me!
  6. Over here (US) Robot Wars is called Battlebots. And I am sure the Brit version is better. Battlebots is fun but it is too slick and too short - only a half hour. They show three matches and a couple of highlights and that's it. I would like to see more stuff on how the bots were designed and built. But that Donna whats-her-name is ..umm...well you know.
  7. I have been on this board since 18 April 1999 but I have posted only 23 times and never for effect. Not exactly lurking but it comes damn close. I have had the game for some time but can't play it because my current rig sucks. I should be getting a new setup soon and then I will be looking for a few games. Can you say "new meat!"?
  8. I went to their site and didn't see any mention of the CD, but there was a page on a 1/16 scale radio controlled Tiger I with video clips. They have an optional turret you can purchase that "shoots" a laser beam that can be detected as a "hit" by another RC tank. Who needs CM now? We just need RC infantry and we're all set.
  9. I for one hope they keep it the way it is. Too many mods will just turn the game into a freak show. The only really good "mods" are the maps, which can already be done. Keep the code tight and let's concentrate on game play. OT- Argie, I just got back from a week in Buenos Aires, awesome. Are you in BA?
  10. The tube serves as a kind of shock absorber, reducing some of the recoil force that is transferred to the gun carriage.
  11. They made a sniper version of the M1 called the M1C and M1D. Because of the top loading they had to mount the scope to the side of the receiver. Then they had to add a cheek pad to the stock so the shooters eye would line up with the scope! They also manufactered a match version, designated NM, that could shoot better than 2 MOA.
  12. I would like to disagree with MarkIV on the accuracy of the M1. I would put an M1 up against a bolt action over open sites any day. There is zero movement of the operating rod as the bullet is moving down the barrel. The gas port is located about an inch from the end of the barrel, by the time the gas has started pushing the rod the bullet is long gone. I have an M1 and its a beaut to fire although the first time I shot it I did a major flinch!
  13. When is MMP coming out with the ASL rulebook. It says Summer '00 on their site. Does anyone have any info?
  14. One of the German's favorite tactics in Normandy early was to have MG teams set to cover an area that was pretargetted by mortars. When the Americans came through the area the MG would open up and the Amis would go to ground then the mortars would start falling. MG team falls back and sets up again somewhere else. But it didn't take (too) long for the Amis to figure that one out though.
  15. I couldn't agree more. When I first started reading battle specific books on WWII I was a little confused by how much waiting in place was done during a battle, and this by the troops engaged not just the reserves. CM is going to "explain" to us why this was so. I am ready to be instructed!
  16. Panzer Blitz. I still remember buying it in 1973 at age 13. It a certain physical look to it that was very cool. I don't know what happened but Panzer Leader never gave me the same feeling.
  17. I am looking forward to the PZ III w/ the 50L gun in CM2. Still not the greatest tank but for a short time on the Eastern Front it was the king.
  18. Check out this site: http://www.freebox.com/asl2cm/
  19. From what I can remember, even if the German H30 experiments had been successful they were on the wrong path to making a practical bomb, although they understood how it would work in theory. The Americans were the only ones able to put the whole thing together, and just in time too!
  20. In discussing sloped armor don't forget that armor can be "sloped" in two directions - vertically and horizontally. When going into a firefight with a Tiger I try to approach the line obliquely. Incoming shots will hit your armor at an angle and voila, you have "created" your own sloped armor. To make this work successfully you really need to know where the opposing AT assets are. Recon!
  21. For an excellent discussion of ACW tactics read "Battle Tactics of the Civil War" by Paddy Griffith.
  22. I ordered my copy Saturday 1 July and I got it via UPS on Friday 7 July.
  23. What if the vehicle bogged not under enemy fire and the crew had plenty of time to abandon the vehicle, would they get their full complement of weapons then? If not, what are they carrying that stuff for?
