  1. My buddy and I want to play a PBEM game of Valley of Trouble (VoT) but we want it to be a "fair" game. Some people we've talked to about VoT play balance say that the Germans need more troops to make it competitive. He's only played the German side and I've only played the American side so we can't be completely objective. In order to get a wider sampling of opinion, we thought polling the forum would be a good way of settling this. What do you think of the play balance of VoT? A. The scenario is fine the way it is. The Germans don't need any more help. B. The Germans need a little boost. They should get 25% more troops. C. This scenario isn't close to being fair to the German side. They have to have 50% more troops. Thanks in advance, Glenn ------------------ As of 4/18/00, I'm a fatherof6 but I'm too busy now to change my name!
  2. Hey Fionn! Great job on your AAR @ CMHQ. http://combathq.thegamers.net/aars/game10/SLindex.asp I really appreciate how you spell out the tactics so that those of us who are trying to learn more can put your experience to work for us. You seem to be really putting it to the Tommies right now. It doesn't look like Bil has much of chance to recover from his early losses. Also, I hope the Turn 4 flanking maneuver by Giesey's platoon works well with minimal casualties. I know they are just cyber-soldiers but let's just say I have a personal interest in his success. 3. Thanks for the news Steve. Sounds like you have another neat feature. Glenn
  4. During a Chance Encounter PBEM game with Yakstock, one of his panzerschrecks knocked out an M4A1 at just over 200 m. Even 3% chances come in sometime. You just never know when they will. After all, the odds of the St. Louis Rams winning Super Bowl XXXIV were as low as 200 to 1 (0.5%) and they still did it. fo4
  5. SS_PzLeader, My comment wasn't directed at you. It was really directed at those who are proud of pirating MS products. IMO, It's an awfully slippery slope once you start stealing from one software company. As far as the topic at hand, obviously I think it's wrong to steal from BTS by giving/selling a copy to anyone else however noble your motives. fo4
  6. I agree with Rick. Copying/Downloading copywrited software is stealing and wrong. It doesn't matter how much you dislike or disagree with the company that published it. Believe it or not, there are people out there who don't like BTS. Is it OK for them to use that as an excuse to copy it? No.
  7. SS_PzLeader, You missed a perfect opportunity for a pun so I'll jump in with both feet. Shouldn't that be "Ground Control to Major Tom?" [This message has been edited by fatherof4 (edited 01-20-2000).]
  8. DjB, Try this link: ( http://www.cdmag.com/articles/024/151/combatm_preview.html ) Other than CMHQ, Computer Games Online is doing the best job of keeping us updated with previews in my opinion. Glenn [This message has been edited by fatherof4 (edited 01-20-2000).]
  9. I think I know what happened in our case DjB. I had restarted the orders phase from a saved file. Granted it is a bug and needs to be corrected but I'm pretty sure this was the cause. I've done it before with no problems but I guess we got bit this time. I've already sent you the turn back but I posted this for everyone else's info. fo4 "A St. Louis resident finally on the Rams bandwagon"
  10. Yes, I've played more than a few online games of PE and really enjoy it. I haven't had much time for it this year though. Most people meet on Kali, server #61 now. You don't need to be a Kali member to play, you just have to start a game in 15 min or you get disconnected. Like others said, it is a lot of fun when it works. I'm sorry to say that 2 vs. 2 games are not very stable in Kali. If you can trade IP addresses, most of the problems go away though. www.Wingssimulations.com has said they will be releasing a MP patch soon that will fix some of the stability/security issues that have come up. If you do get PE, I'd recommend you join an online battalion. I'm in the 4th Armor Division ( http://us4tharmordiv.tripod.com/ ). Tanking with your buddies is definitely a lot more fun. Glenn a.k.a. 11. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>This has made a Jan 1 Gold Date undesirable<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Boo Hoo. It's not going to be a very Merry Christmas in the fo4 house after all. Sniff, sniff. (just kidding) Oh well. I for one understand. Steve, I hope you and the rest of the Design Team have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Enjoy your holiday. But then get CM to us ASAP!!!! Glenn
  12. I love Panzer Elite. It's the only computer game I'm playing right now (in between my CM PBEM turns of course). I could go on, but this is really an Off Topic thread so I won't. To justify in my mind posting something off topic, I'd also like to bring up something that is very much on topic. I've been playing PE with an online battalion ( http://us4tharmordiv.tripod.com/ ) and this has sparked an interest in me for participating in a "Meta Campaign" others have talked about here before. (see http://www.battlefront.com/discuss/Forum1/HTML/001535.html for more info). Playing with a team has an appeal to me that just playing online for myself doesn't. It's a lot of fun and might be for CM too. Then again, this type of thing may be much better suited to sims where a long battle is an hour. My PBEM games usually take a couple of weeks to finish now. (They should be faster, but I don't always remember to attach the correct files) Glenn a.k.a. SSgt. fatherof4, 4AD37TB, 2nd platoon
  13. Hey Yakstock! Check out the latest addition to hero's corner. You might recognize him. You sure got that picture up in a hurry Matt. Thanks. Glenn
  14. Pretty brave OSCAR. You've decided to break your word and start posting again just to kick Fionn when he's down. Sad. Very Sad. fo4
  15. In another thread http://www.battlefront.com/discuss/Forum1/HTML/001867.html , they were talking about gun depression limits, what about elevation limits? It appears that shots from my tanks' main guns are not hitting targets on the 2nd floors of buildings. They always sail underneath. This seems to be independent of the distance of my tank from the building. Is this just a graphical thing or can they really not be elevated far enough? It seems to me that if the latter case is true, the gun should not fire. Glenn
  16. I haven't played, or even looked at, either side yet of Riesberg. (Been saving it for a rainy day like this weekend.) If you also haven't played it yet and want the challenge of a blind PBEM game, send me a setup. I'll play either side. Thanks, fo4 giesey@gtw.net [This message has been edited by fatherof4 (edited 11-25-99).]
  17. I've seen in several places that TCP/IP play is going to be in the final version and I was wondering if you all know yet specifically how that is going to work. I did a quick search and found at the bottom of a thread entitled "Ignorant (I hope!) PBEM Question" from early November, that Lokesa has basically the same question I do. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Could you tell us what your basic plan is for TCP/IP? How you plan to set it up, turn sequence, etc. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> BTS's Customer Response Dept. [i.e. Steve ] is outstanding so I assume they just missed it in all the hubbub. I also have one suggestion regarding live play and have no idea if it is technically feasible. It is based on my experiences playing Axis & Allies in a ladder group at the Zone. As anyone who played it online knows, A&A is quite buggy and even the patched version is susceptible to game ending lockups. Given that fact, the ladder group had rules that you had to save the game often and restart from the last save. But sometimes these lockups occured during the combat resolution phase. I'm of the opinion that 95%+ of the time, they were legitimate. But a few certain players developed reputations of having mysterious crashes whenever they got a particularly bad roll. And since you couldn't save while you were rolling up a combat, you'd have to go back to the last save before that combat. OOOPS, SORRY! Now I know CM is much more complicated than A&A and its beta is much less buggy than patched A&A. But will it be possible for both players to save prior to viewing the combat replay? That way, if Stug A has a "lucky" shot and kills Jumbo B (sorry Moon!) Player B won't be tempted to have a power surge failure and need a "do-over". I know almost all wargamers are honorable people but in ladder play when every win/loss counts, people sometimes rationalize unsportsmanlike conduct and let the "Dark Side" rule. BTS has probably thought of all this and my ramblings were unnecessary but just in case they hadn't, it was worth a few minutes of my typing. If nothing else, it can serve as one example of the reason BTS needs to have the PBEM rules the way they are. Glenn
  18. I'm going to try and show up but if I'm not, could you make sure and ask if they are still on track for release next month? Steve may not answer but that doesn't mean we can't ask. Glenn
  19. LOVE IT! The only thing I don't like is that I don't have enough time to play as much as I want. fo4 p.s. I'm also looking forward to that neat Panther print.
  20. I don't know if this is a video driver problem or not but I'll post it here anyway. Back in the middle of the October while we were all pining away for the demo, Steve mentioned a problem you were having: <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Seems that if you use a custom cursor (of at least a certain size) it doesn't work very well, even though it is supposed to. (sigh) what else is new...<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> As I was playing my game last night (Last Defense as Germans), the only problem I experienced was with my custom cursor: When trying to move my units, the cursor would frequently jump around the screen even though I moved the mouse only a tiny bit. It seemed to happen less when I was moving the unit perpendicular to my line of sight but it still happened. Sometimes, no matter what I did, I could not move to certain places. Just as a real quick check, I loaded the default Windows cursor set this morning and started the first turn of the same scenario. The change seem to help, but it still happened. Is this that problem Steve was talking about? System: AMD Athlon 500 MHz w/ 128 MB Video Card: Voodoo3 3000 (driver version: 1.02.18) fo4 p.s. BTW, THANK YOU! CM IS EVERYTHING YOU PROMISED AND MORE.
  21. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Keep in mind also, Intel and Microsoft will be part of the Dow Jones Industrial Average some day.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Kingtiger, Even as you wrote those words, I heard on the news that that day is today! fo4

  23. OSCAR, What little credibility you had has just gone out the window. 1) You don't have time to look for the answers to your questions, just to find things to criticize. Sure. (BTW, you even managed to totally misrepresent the one example you picked.) 2) Since CM isn't perfect (no one said it was), the attempt to try to improve the genre of wargames shouldn't have been made. Are you also a member of the "Flat Earth Society"? After all, the world is not a perfect sphere so people who say the earth is round are wrong. Should we ignore Christopher Columbus because his attempt to sail around the world was a failure? I don't blame BTS for ignoring you. fo4 [This message has been edited by fatherof4 (edited 10-20-99).]
  24. R. Cunningham, If I'm supposed to consider insulting a person who's done nothing to deserve it funny, then I guess I don't have a sense of humor. Just because flame-wars are par for the course on the Usenet doesn't mean they have to happen on this board too. It's not hard to disagree without being disagreable if you really want to. I really enjoy this board so I check in several times a day and read every message. I've learned a lot about WWII and even some modern stuff too. You probably know a lot more about that kind of thing than I do so you don't need the "education" like I do. I'd like this "school" to continue so let's all do our best and be civil with each other. fo4 p.s. I also suspect that you're trying to provoke the wrong fellow. If you were to criticize me, I don't think anyone else would care very much. Fionn, on the other hand, has put in a lot of time here over many months and made many friends. I'm sure they appreciate his efforts even more than I do. Even if he gets to play CM while we can only sit on our hands.
