1. Hmm...maybe Kit and I should play, huh, Cuke? Too bad as Chance was just getting interesting. ------------------ Doug WB: -argo- {501 FF}
 2. Yup..."fun" ain't it. ------------------ Doug WB: -argo- {501 FF}
 3. Aha! Even more! ------------------ Doug WB: -argo- {501 FF}
 4. Honestly my interest has waned of late for CM mostly because of these issues, but I had some free time today and decided to check back. *THANK YOU* for posting that you're having the same problem. Sucks, don't it. Anyway...at least I'm not the only one, but I've now had 3 PBEM games totally dorked by this problem and until I get an answer, I won't be buying the full game. Hell...I won't even play any more demo PBEM games for fear of losing them just when things get good. ------------------ Doug WB: -argo- {501 FF}
 5. Considering PBEM's not working too great for me, I voted to wait. Me and 5 *whole* other people. ------------------ Doug WB: -argo- {501 FF}
 6. Ooops...I forgot to mention. Last night when it happened I was pressing keys to see if I could clear it and somehow a little dialog box popped up. Unfortunately, it was *behind* the CM application windown and I couldn't see it. I could see the "CLOSE (X)" menu choice from that upper-left pull-down menu that appears on all Windows applications/windows, but I couldn't see the contents of the dialog to know what was wrong or what it was trying to tell me. If this has been solved in subsequent builds, I'd love to hear about it. This is another one of those bugs/problems that's making me think I don't want to spend $45 on this game. Really disappointing to get into the middle turns of a really good PBEM game only to be stopped dead in your tracks by a problem like this. ------------------ Doug WB: -argo- {501 FF}
 7. We've tried lots of stuff, including re-installing the CM application folder, replaying from a turn or so previously, renmaing the PBEM file, *not* renaming the PBEM file, moving it out of the CM directory, mailing it from the CM directory, etc., etc. Now it just started happening with another game I've got (or had) going. So out of 3 PBEM games I had going -- most in the middle of the really exciting stuff -- only one is still moving along. The other two have apparently suffered from some sort of file corruption and even going back and replaying the turn from a couple of e-mails ago isn't fixing it. Bummed out, ------------------ Doug WB: -argo- {501 FF}
 8. OK...this has happened at least once to me and a friend playing PBEM. This time it really hurts given the outcome. Here's the story: 1. It's turn 9 or 10 of Last Defense. I'm the Ami's. I get my opponents orders (small file) and when I load it up...<POOF>...my reinforcements have arrived. Yeah! I plot my lines of fire and my other moves and send him the turn (big file). 2. He gets it and because of sequencing is only able to watch the movie -- in which my 3 Hellcats blow the ever-livin' *SNOT* out of his remaining tanks. Got the Tiger and both StuG III's. YEAH again! 3. He curses and produces the file back to me (big one again). I should be able to watch the movie and plot my moves (right?), but what happens is that "Allied Password:" prompt comes up and just "dings" at me. I can't type. I can't do anything. The only key that works is [ENTER] and that makes CM quit back to the desktop. The options are for me to reply my part of the turn, but because this is random, my Hellcats might not do just a great job this time. The other option I thought of is that -- since we're pals -- he gives me his password. Since he just got to watch the movie anyway, I might be able to create his move and then mine and then send him the turn where he puts in his orders and we'd be back on track. Q: Has anyone else seen this? (I tried to search but didn't see anything.) Q: Is there any other way around this? Q: Do we know what causes it? Thanks, ------------------ Doug WB: -argo- {501 FF} [This message has been edited by argo (edited 12-01-99).]
 9. Yeah...I had a thought to suggest the same thing. Prolly too late now, but it'd be nice to have 2 (or more) security options for games. One option -- call it "loose" security -- where each person would be able to issue orders and watch the movie in the same turn. The second option could work the way it does now. I know the guys I play against don't and wouldn't cheat the system. I understand the reasoning behind the current structure, but it sure would be nice if there was a quicker way. ------------------ Doug WB: -argo- {501 FF}
 10. Shaddup, Cuke. You bastage! Three mortar rounds and you take out one of my 88s? Ugh...I'm in deep trouble if I can't get a few lucky shots in at your Shermans. Of course, if you'd fight like a man instead of trying to out flank me.... I think I sent you the file...didn't I? ------------------ Doug WB: -argo- {501 FF}
 11. My sincerest apologies if I pissed off the BTS guys or made it sound like the problem was their fault. On a whim, I did a Win98 re-install. Not sure if it was that, or maybe the new Voodoo II drivers that were installed during that process. Wish I knew how to pin it down more to help you out. Suffice it to say that the problem is solved and CM runs now even if it's not the first thing. It even runs with other things (like e-mail). Thanks for all the suggestions. Unfortunately, the most drastic one is the one that "fixed" it. ------------------ Doug WB: -argo- {501 FF}
 12. Well...I'll post this as a separate thread, but... My sincerest apologies if I pissed off the BTS guys or made it sound like the problem was their fault. On a whim, I did a Win98 re-install. 13.
quote:
Honestly, Argo, I'd suggest uninstalling the demo and then re-installing it. It's entirely possible that the files got corrupted in a way that no diagnosis can detect. Whenever I have a program start getting all squirrely, and nothing else is wrong with my system/programs, if possible I uninstall and reinstall. Works more often than not. It's also a GREAT argument against installing software from somebody else's disk/internet download (read: piracy) If you have a problem (as I did 1.5 years ago when my mobo DIED) and you don't have all the disks, you're boned.

I'd have to take my socks off to count the number of times I've re-installed. I've even re-installed to a different drive. Keep most of my games on a second partition, but installed CM to the primary partition. Same issue.
quote:
For one, you have the processor overclocked (1% of PC's) and 2nd you have a 3D card piggy-backed off a 2D/3D card. Yikes, even Diamond doesn't recommend that. It is actually more likely that your system is confusing CM, than CM confusing your system.

Touche. Still bugging the crap outta me that this is the only game I have that exhibits such weirdness...actually...any weirdness. I have some that use the Viper and some the Monster II and can't recall any troubles. I'm almost to the point of a Win98 re-install, but was hoping to avoid that just to try to fix this one thing. I realize it'd probably "clean up" my system, though.
quote:
Another CM'er mentioned the following in an e-mail to me regarding TNT: " First, the InControl tools won't work correctly with DirectX 7 until the next version of the Diamond drivers are released. This is supposed to happen in the next few weeks, according to the tech support guy". I might add that Diamond Drivers are typically very late (like a year late).

Yeah...I'm not even running that. The last reboot I did the only thing running was Windows. Killed all SysTray items and anything else. Still got the same thing. It's just messed. One reboot it crashes, I reboot again and it works. Regardless, however, as soon as I run *any* application, CM won't run again until a reboot. Not trying to blame this on or yell at BTS. The only thing I'm disappointed in is the short "must be your system" reply. I know I haven't even paid for anything yet and they'll probably not miss my $50 if I don't buy the game because of it. Mostly just disappointed because if I *can't* get this fixed, it seems pointless to spend the money when I have to jump through hoops to play. Thanks for the suggestions. ------------------ Doug WB: -argo- {501 FF}
 14. Here's the crash message in case you wanna try to help me figure this out: ----- COMBAT MISSION BETA DEMO caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 015f:bff87f4f. Registers: EAX=0078ebd0 CS=015f EIP=bff87f4f EFLGS=00010217 EBX=0078ebd0 SS=0167 ESP=0078e7a4 EBP=0078e81c ECX=cad99980 DS=0167 ESI=000014de FS=4237 EDX=0000015f ES=0167 EDI=01674237 GS=0000 Bytes at CS:EIP: 81 3f 27 00 00 c0 74 39 39 5e 0c 72 05 39 5e 10 Stack dump: baa30414 00000000 baa301a8 0000000d baa38f39 00000028 8168c000 0078e7d4 0000000d 0000000d 816b5154 cad99980 0078e944 bff85213 816b5154 0078e818 ----- FWIW, this is with a minimal set of TSRs and things loaded at bootup. This is also *right* after rebooting and before running *any* applications, so that "fix" doesn't even work all the time. Really think CM is stomping on something else's memory. Can't believe no one else has this problem. My system isn't terribly customized and I don't have a lot of crap loading at startup. ------------------ Doug WB: -argo- {501 FF}
