  1. I stumbled across a web page the other day where a WWII US Army tanker was recounting coming up against a sturmtiger with a group of Shermans and how it engaged them, taking out two shermans with one near miss...I'd love to see it as well as the Brumbar in a future add on. I have some neat pictures of the one at Sinsheim. Incredible vehicle. Zamo
  2. Ah! But what about the AC IV, fitted with TWIN 17 pounder guns???!!! Surely a noteworthy family member. (Though this prototype mounted the twin guns soley to test recoil of the harder hitting 25 pdr, which wasn't availible at the time). Chamberlain sez 66 AC I's were completed and, though a capable design, were relegated to training units due to the appearance in numbers of U.S. vehicles. I always have wished the Aussies had utilized this nifty tank. I'd like to model one. I wonder if there is a kit? Zamo
  3. You forgot: NVRTGSWF Which is REALLY hard to spell with 7 letters Not to mention: PIAT4ME and IUGOWEGO and as for the license plate holder: My other car is a Sonderkraftfahrzeug 171 Ausfuhrung G
  4. Again here... Z [This message has been edited by Zamo (edited 08-17-2000).]
  5. I removed a long disertation on morality and the worth of individual life here because I thought it belittled the original intent of this thread... Zamo [This message has been edited by Zamo (edited 08-17-2000).]
  6. Thanks for sharing. Cool picture. I thought this was going to be some really bad Irish joke aimed at Fionn.
  7. Sometimes the tripe these bastards throw around gets so deep you need wings to stay above it. It's always disappointed me when I read complete and utter garbage from people who I'd like to respect on other issues, only to realize they are actually well read, but completely assinine morons. As to the wreck of the Kursk. I will be really surprised if the get anybody out. I think they've all been fish food for days. Sad to say. May the rest in peace. I hope I'm wrong, but...Now they're saying the entire bow section fore of the tower is smashed. That's pretty catastrophic. I fear it shall prove far grimer business then early reports indicated. 8. Yeah Frenchy, I have no problem with "Wingers". I'd buy the whole air wing a round of beers so long as they do their job and keep the Air Farce away. They used to scare me more than a flock of Hind-D's. Everybody looks like a bad guy from 10,000 feet. Give me Marine Air any day of the week. I remember once down at 29 stumps a Cobra loosed a tow or some damn rocket at a target downrange from behind me and I hadn't even known he was there until that tremendious roar voomed over head. He was about 75-100 yards astern of us, indexing targets WAY outside our range (M-60A1). I always thought it was ridiculas for ground pounder Marines to lambast Wingers so much, when everybody who ain't a Marine is a much better target. Isn't that why God invented Squids? Zamo
  9. Generally good opinions here. As a former Marine, I can only go with what I know. Any Marine would really only have one answer for you, and every Marine here has already said it. I met the best people I have ever known while serving as a Marine tanker. Absolutely the BEST. Not a one of them was "crazy". With all due respect to my comrades in the other services, I think a person would have to be crazy to serve in any combat arms unit that wasn't a Marine unit. I KNOW every Marine near me in combat will do everything he can to save my ass, even after it's nothing but a gut pile. It's not just hype, it's historically verifiable fact. The Marines are family. Semper Fi, lads! There are fine men (and women I'm told) in every service, and I must agree with those who have said you get out of it what you put in. What ever choice you make, make it with earnest and absolute conviction and you won't be sorry. My only additional advice is go combat arms. Be the cutting edge, make a difference. Sure, it's dangerous, but that's what the military is all about. If you don't want to risk getting shot at, go get a job at MacDonalds. The pay will be about the same. Combat arms units in the Army tend to be filled with the same motivated individuals you find in corrosponding Marine units from what I've seen. The biggest difference, is Marines get a more aggressive style of training, and the Army gets all the new gear. I have known many Navy vets, and most of them have a kind of "hi-ho" sort of attitude about it. Considering it a job they did. I don't even consider the Air Force a military entity. Sorry fly-boys, that's my earnest opinion. Good luck. And keep your head down. Sgt. Zamo
  10. I'm glad to find this thread. I came here this morning to post one identical to it and found it had already been done. Let's hope this has a happy ending. There are too many submarines from all nations on "Eternal Patrol". Zamo
  11. I have lost more damn King Tigers to bazooka's than to anything else....except the dreaded Company CO. I lost two KT's to one CO in one turn! God I was infuriated.
  12. Here is another picture I took of the same beast. I seem to recall it was a post war weapon not a movie prop. I also think it was either from one of the Scandanavian countries, but that may be incorrect. You can see the running gear here is exactly what you guys have already pegged it as. My father has the Sinsheim book we bought while there, I will try and get it and see if it talks about this vehicle. Though I'm sure you guys will have it all figured out by then. Note the placard at the bottom may say "Bofors" which may be a clue as to who made it... Respectfully, Zamo [This message has been edited by Zamo (edited 08-15-2000).]
  13. I like this idea, you mean like the little arrow for mg's and the little oval for armor? Like we used in the service and such as can be found on all of our old cardboard counters? yeah! That would be a way cool bridge of old/new and military. I think this would be cool, even though at this scale it probably wouldn't be necessary. Then you could turn off the animations and just watch the little rectangle with an S in it destroy the little circle with an arrow coming out. Imagine watching these little boxes fluidly moving over the ground...HAHAHAHAHA! I like it. It would be a hilarious event if everybody decided they liked playing with it that way more, and all of Steve and Charles 3d work would turn out to be for not! HAHAHAHA! I think I'm loosing my mind again. Zamo PS: I do think it would be a neat addition.
  14. Well, now it's time for me to post. Simply because this is a long pointless thread, and I feel it's my duty to add to it. So there. If I can qoute a scene from the great vestible of all knowledge and wisdom (The Simpsons): "No one ever picks Italy" Zamo
  15. 6'1", great size for a tanker! You know, most of the guys I knew in the Marines WERE all on the tall size. There were some noteworthy exceptions. I had one Gunnery Sergeant who couldn't have been over 5'2" and he was one of the toughest SOB's I've ever known. Fantastic fellow. USMC stands for Uncle Sams Misguided Children...Obviously! Semper Fi, Zamo Zamo
  16. Yes, your email is not in the profile for some reason...Check into it and I'd be glad to play. Zamo
  17. I can take it or leave it. I have never felt the need for a roster. I like the game just fine as is. Personally, I agree it adds more gaminess to the game. A Company CO doesn't go over a roster and issue each unit commands EACH minute of a battle, which is what we're talking about with CM's turns. By providing a roster, you're actually increasing the micro-management potential, not decreasing it. It will make it easier to manage orders for all your troops, which is exactly what you guys seem to want, I realize. Bad idea for me. Let the TacAI do that. But I realize I am not everyone, and I think an Order of battle list (not really a roster) might be a useful thing for the game to have. To me, I'd never use it. Like the rosters in Steel Panthers, they were there, I never used them. Yet some people might find the game easier to manage and thus funner to play if it did exist. It seems like it would require a lot of code work to add at this point, an entirely new feature as it were, so I agree, let's think about it for CM2.
  18. I just played a short and nasty 300 point quick battle and got trounced rapidly by the AI. It was sobering. I set myself up as the axis defending with two Pzkpf IV's and a "small" map. I chose good defensive positions and set things going. It was a long, narrow map and I thought, oh wow, I'll be able to cream these guys, I should have made this a bigger map for their sake. Four turns later I had two smoking panzers and two dead crews. The AI employed a broad frontal assault. I haven't seen it do that before. They just came at me on the run, under the cover of smoke, and in no time were flanking the ville I was in. I tried to maneuver, but it was too late... I have beaten the AI soundly scores of times, most of the time, but every time it bests me I am completely overwhelmed. I sure love this game! Zamo
  19. Eagle, Globe and Anchor -> Marine Corps Tanker! 1811 ooorah! Tank Commander M-60A1 RISE/Passive during the `80's Beers to you comrades! Sgt. Zamo, USMCR Yakima Marines! Had to get out after only four wonderful years to fight for my life against bone cancer (I won...)
  20. I am not a big fan of the .308 for hunting, or target shooting, so it get's kicked of the list. If you think you may want to hunt someday, go with 7mm Win. Mag. If not, if you just want to "plink" targets then it's really hard to beat .223 for accuracy, availibility and cost. Other rounds like the 6mm PPC shoot better, but really HAVE to be hand loaded 'cause commercial ammo just isn't there. .22-250 is another full power great target/varmint round if you want more than a .223. I have recently (last deer season) fallen in love with .270 myself. As to rifles? I am partial to the Winchester Model 70 and or Rem. 700 BDL. for bolt actions. I don't care much for the Ruger, it's action always seems awfully coarse and rough to me. Though I have several friends who swear by them and a few of them are Guides up in the Denali, in AK. The only tip I may offer is spend a little extra and get stainless. If you're out on the wet coast like me, it will pay for itself very quickly. You really need to tell us more of what kind of shooting you plan on doing for anything other than a "general" recommendation. Zamo
  21. Gig Harbor, Washington It really sucks here. Don't ever think of moving to Seattle/the Puget Sound. You'd hate it. It always rains. PS: Please have all your friends who have already moved here return to where they came from. They'll be much happier. Thank you in advance. Zamo
  22. Yes, I too just read this news and bid farewell to one of my favorite actors. The world is now a little colder...
  23. I have been screaming to my fellow jarhead tankers for years about the need to bring back the concept of the "light tank". There are several good candidates on the shelf right now which are light, relatively survivable and have a good anti-armor capability. The L7 105mm gun proved itself again in the gulf as capable of defeating Soviet produced armor. This is the gun found in the M60 series and which was the original weapon in the Abrams. Several of the lighter tanks I've heard about which fit the catagory (dated, I haven't really checked on this in the last few years) were such weapons as FMC's CCV-L or Cadillac-Gage's Stingray as well as Argentina's TAM and Brazil's Osorio which are both full MBT's in a lighter configuration than the heavies, but seem perfect for the role we're talking about. For that matter, why not dust off our old workhorse the M-60A3? There's still enough of them around. Or the Marines LAV-25? My point is there are a number of great light/medium armored vehicles out there such that we don't need to spend millions of dollars on development when an off the shelf solution will fit the bill. My .02cents Zamo
  24. Dearest Havermeyer, I must disagree. While I think richocheting rounds SHOULD and may in fact be modeled, what I think you saw was most likely something else. On a few occasions I have witnessed the wonderous application of the world famouse Nahverteidigungenswaffe (...And if that's not how it's spelled to hell with it!) Vehicle point defense weapon. Which was a roof mounted, short range grenade morter designed to foil infantry close assaults. I have seen my crews employ it a couple of times and it's always a pleasant surprise (for the Axis player) Still, you saw it and I didn't. It would indeed be cool if what you saw was a deflected round. Zamo
