  1. PowerTowerPro 225 Mhz 604e, OS 8.1, Rage Orion card. Works great. Frame rate might be a bit slow in that I don't see every mortar explosion, but I have no trouble tracking tank projectiles. ------------------ Laurie Nyveen a.k.a. 2. No, not a Baylon5 fan. Let's just say that I tootle along in a virtual Spitfire far too much to view anything in CM as other than a target. You might kick my ass in two dimensions, Fionn, but let me know when you want to be humbled in the virtual skies. I also disagree on the ranges of the planes. I think they'd be closer. The P-47, for example, had guns harmonized for targets 250-300 yards away. Considering the demo map is roughly 1000 yards on a side, the planes would definitely be closer than the distant horizon. Check out some gun cam footage. Close and nasty. ------------------ Laurie Nyveen a.k.a. 3. "as it stands, IMHO, the biggest question about this battle is "can the Germans get their armor into position to support the infantry close-up without exposing themselves to the Hellcats (which can easily destroy all 3 German tanks on the first turn they're present)" Really? I don't see the Hellcats as any kind of threat. Sit your Panzer 850m away and pick them off like pigeons while their shells shatter on your armour. The one thing I'd change is to randomize their appearance, or occasionally provide something with a bigger gun. Right now, if you just set your Panzer up at the back of the map when you expect the Hellcats, the Hellcats are mincemeat. ------------------ Laurie Nyveen a.k.a. 4. It's much better just to stay 850m away, squared up. You'll get hit, but laugh at each "shell shattered" message. ------------------ Laurie Nyveen a.k.a. 5. Aw, nuts. I'm going to have to root for the shadows. ------------------ Laurie Nyveen a.k.a. Webs, member of the WarBirds training staff ___________________ Editor, Netsurfer Digest - http://www.netsurf.com/nsd/index.html 101 Sqn opus-in-progress - http://101.warbirds.org/
  6. Been playing fine for a week or so. Today, just after I clicked "Go" to initiatethe movement phase, CM locked up hard, forcing a three-finger reboot. Every time I try to reload the Autosave file from that game, CM locks up on the splash screen and takes my machine with it. DLed a new copy of CM, same thing with that Autosave, although I can play new games just fine. Anybody want to take that Autosave off my hands so they can run a MacsBug on it? Or should I run MacsBug and send a report? ------------------ Laurie Nyveen a.k.a. 7. Odd moment from Reisberg: I advanced two Panzerschrek crews through heavy woods to outflank a tank on either side. Crew 1 got it. Crew 2 spotted an enemy mortar about 50m away and came under fire from enemy infantry about 250m away. My PS was pinned for a bit in heavy woods and lost a man. Meanwhile, the mortar strolled on by, and looked like it was trying to get behind the town (all this on the extreme German left). My PS dude recovered and retreated from the enemy infantry with one shot left. I sent him chasing after the mortar. He took his last shot and missed. For the rest of the scenario, I had this PS dude chasing the mortar around the map in a game of tag. The mortar would run to a spot, I sent the PS there, Then the next spot, etc., etc. At one point, the two units just sat within 10m of each other, doing nothing for two turns. They never attacked one another after that last PS shot, yet my PS seemed to prevent the mortar from taking shots - like he kicked over the tube every time they set it up. Neither unit surrendered, either. It was very odd, yet effective from my perspective. ------------------ Laurie Nyveen a.k.a. 8. As an attacker, I've had most success in Riesberg hanging back with my tanks under cover and moving the infantry up to spot the guns. Once I know where they are, I use mortars and arty to take them out. If that fails, the bazookas work fine too. Takes a while to develop, but once the guns are gone, it's a cakewalk. What's nice is that there's a spot just behind the hill on the US right where you can park a tank that can pound the MG nests in town yet remain invisible to the 88s. ------------------ Laurie Nyveen a.k.a. 9. Ahhhh, crates. I was perplexed - it's virtually impossible to capture a deployed dratipizzedmishortzenwaffe intact. ------------------ Laurie Nyveen a.k.a. 10. I hear of others reading your AARs, F. Where? ------------------ Laurie Nyveen a.k.a. Webs, member of the WarBirds training staff ___________________ Editor, Netsurfer Digest - http://www.netsurf.com/nsd/index.html 101 Sqn opus-in-progress - http://101.warbirds.org/
  11. In the first case, probably a grenade. Nothing more powerful than that for sure. In the second, definitely an 88.
  12. I've seen infantry men explode into a big ball of flame twice. First time, I assaulted an enemy unit of unknown affiliation. I never got a chance to identify them, as they exploded, leaving behind only oddly cubic flames. Second time, it was my unit that bought it, a 61mm mortar. This time, the survivors were IDed as "crew". So, were both these cases of 61mm mortar ammo exploding (both fireballs used to be Yanks)? If so, would the fire keep burning or would it just be an explosion? What fuel would keep the fire going? Cigarettes? Secondly, you need to fix the shape of that fire. It's really ugly compared with the other graphics. And so oddly squared. Lastly, why are the survivors known as "crew" and why are they so useless? Shouldn't they just be regular infantry without the mortar? ------------------ Laurie Nyveen a.k.a. 13. It all started going downhill when they gave up on the Mac. ------------------ Laurie Nyveen a.k.a. Webs, member of the WarBirds training staff ___________________ Editor, Netsurfer Digest - http://www.netsurf.com/nsd/index.html 101 Sqn opus-in-progress - http://101.warbirds.org/
  14. Finallllly won LastDef as German on my third try. First two times I'd tried to set up an ambush for the Hellcats. Both times my unbuttoned AFVs waited for my infantry to spot the Hellcats. I timed a coordinated attack and plunk, plunk, plunk - both times I lost all my AFVs in short order. At least the 81/105mm get them, but I still lost. Third time, I set up a Stug at the top of the road with a couple of MG42 teams and a HT to flush out any US in the objective house on the left. Not seeing any 'zookas, I went down the left side with my Tiger leading a Stug and two HTs, carefully staying >200m from any contacts. I detroyed the objective with tank guns, and watched three squads run away. I moved my right-side Stug down to the trees to watch for Hellcats (maybe this time...) and my other armor waited while my infantry rooted out the woods. Whaddya know! A dead 'zooka team. The Hellcats came. I traded that one Stug for a Hellcat (yay!) instantaneously. I threw all my artillery at the Hellcats while my armor waited, nicely screened from the Hellcats by the woods lining the road. My artillery took out one more Hellcat and buttined the other. I decided to push it and moved my Stug and Tiger out to challenge the remaining one. Tiger got it, but was lost, too. My last Stug and HTs ran wild. I lost one HT to a suicide infantry squad, and my Stug had run out of MG ammo. US morale was pitiful, but I hadn't yet crossed the wheat with my right. The Stug was moving in to eliminate a US MG team blocking my infantry advance when a previously routed green US 'zooka dweeb took out its gun. No MG left either. What to do? I sent the Stug in next to the building the MG was in, hoping to draw fire and block his view. Instead the MG surrendered. I never got to the bridge, but I won a total victory and suffered only 46 casualties (10 dead). It would have been a lot less had I decided not to push out a half-platoon that wasn't really a threat.... Sorry for the length. Morale: That's one nice road on the German left.... ------------------ Laurie Nyveen a.k.a. 15. Well, it's not an extension conflict as far as I can tell. I just had the same problem in a set had worked just fine. And I think the problem is that the game doesn't record mouse clicks. Interesting note: I had Eudora Light 3.1.3, Netscape Navigator 4.0.8, and ICQ up at the same time as CM. When I quit CM, quit ICQ, then re-opened CM, the mouse clicks worked fine. I then quit CM, booted ICQ, and booted CM. Mouse clicks still worked fine. Beats me.... ------------------ Laurie Nyveen a.k.a. 16. It's working fine now. I think the problem may have been that CM wasn't working with my WarBirds extension set. I'll do more testing and get a more definitive answer. A working CM has allowed me to diagnose the "lines from heaven". Basically, they were the lines you see when the LOS (for example) of a selected unit which you are in front of appears to come down out of the sky. I'll post a message here about extensions later. ------------------ Laurie Nyveen a.k.a. 17. This is really odd. I can't select a unit with option-click - I need to cycle through them with -/+ only. Even when I do select a unit, and hit <space> to bring up the commands, then select an action, nothing happens. At best, but not always, I see one of those coloured lines going way off into the heavens as if linked to God's mouse. Nothing I do can change that line or put commands. Clicking does nothing. Sometimes I end up sending a unit off the map, but that's all I can do. Still, even with static units, I kicked Bosch heinie. It seems like the game just never sees my mouse, although I can navigate the views with it. Any ideas? PowerTowerPro 225 (w/ PowerComp mouse), OS 8.1, 128 MB RAM, yadda yadda. ------------------ Laurie Nyveen a.k.a.
