  1. I was wondering, I've read a few times that the Canadians were used as the British SS, or shock troops. Apparently this goes back to WW1 too. I've read accounts(from almost every country that has an opinion on this, [assuming the Russians don't]) that range from: good quality British units to elite allied supermen. As far as quality/moral et al. How are they being modeled in CM? Canadians are supposedly know for there modesty, and in their writings seems as shocked as anyone that they turn into these types of soldiers. (the old joke being, in Canada, Napoleon would have been a nobody) I hope someone with informed opinions on this can add some comments. To be honest, I had no idea they even participated in D-day as a Canadian force until browsing a book store after I got there on my sabbatical year. I can't tell, do I subtract American level jingoism when reading Canadian accounts or British level...or are they really that modest?(I now this varies by author too.) etc.
  2. Whoops, I just got a new computer so I guess it just didn't’ have the cookie. Anyway given the facts (posted just above as “Vier”) I think an apology might be in order from you high strung folks.
  3. Hey Capt. Foobar, Well, if you’re an American, I don’t yet see a Russian, Canadian, Frenchman, Pollak, Aussie...etc etc. Standing beside you to back you up this time...after all can Americans beat anyone by themselves....? *cough* (sounds like Vietnam) CIA: Overthrowing Castro since 1960!
  4. ...auf deiner Fensterbank steht ein plastic Tannenbaum, und in deinem Shrank steht eine weisse nackte Frau.... Frohes Fest! 4
  5. Ohh yeah, there is an opening in the hull about 2/3 back under the turret(the engine being in front for more protection.
  6. Hmmm, I can't remember for sure, but I think the MK1 has evert compartment extra protected and the ammo comp can be fit to carrry extra infantry...or PLO leaders I suppose. It was designed my General Tal, great designer...Tal was my favorite chess player, that's why I remember it at all.
  7. AP is reporting that in a Russian Tank attack today, the Russians lost 7 tanks and a number of personnel carriers as well as over 100 dead. What do you suppose the Rebels are using? Anyway, if they do a modern version it would make a interesting couple of scenarios.
  8. Well, I’d like to see a new demo scenario for all the obvious reasons, and especially one with some new and interesting units...but, I think from a marketing point of view it might be wise to have one more really kick-ass scenario before the X-mas break. Just so people will remember to keep a few dollars clear on their credit card. Also, you don’t want other new games to steel to much thunder and you want to keep your momentum going. P.S. I’m not sure I know what I”m talking about, because when I’ve been forced to attend marketing meetings in the past I’m usually thinking about my next move in just such a game...but this is the kind of language they use..
  9. Hmmm, that sounds intersting. What's the web page?
  10. I think the Vietnam memorial was viewed by most people as an apologetic to the soldiers that were sent to a war that was not just wrong-but fundamentally wrong and immoral. However I’m sure it was also used by officials for the normal propaganda purposes, given the U.S. has never remotely come to terms with Vietnam in a official sense. The case of WW2 is very different from almost any other war, even a lot hard core 60’s pacifists say you can have a moral argument for fighting in WW2. A lot of the vets that saw the camps likely would have though that defeating fascism was the least the could have done and now it’s just time to get on with life. Besides after the war there were still many people who remembered that warnings and pleadings for the U.S. to join the war earlier. Also the fact that the U.S. turned away many Jews fleeing Germany. I think also, another little morsel that is more completely down the memory hole now it Japans frankness with the U.S. in their application of a U.S. style Monroe doctrine in SE Asia. The U.S. could have easily at least tried to negotiate a situation(that they later gave Japan to stall Asian communism) where Japan could economically dominate SE Asia. Instead the U.S. and UK shut off a lot of markets to Japan after years of preaching free trade etc. (remember roaring 20’s UK and US where telling everyone the same thing as today until Japan started making better and cheeper stuff[even then] and like the 80’s they just closer the door and protected domestic producers. Also resurgent Germany changed their minds, except Hitler understood the rules outright and always looked at rearming.) Of course many complexities arise...
  11. I’ve already mentioned my favorite WW2 movies: Die Brücke (The Bridge), Das Boot and Come and See. Plus WW1: Paths of Glory and All Quite on the Western Front. But... I think one of the greatest war movies (and actually a WW2 movie) is ALEXANDER NEVSKY! Made in 1938 it’s ostensibly about the legend, Prince Alexander Vasilievich Nevsky that led the Russians to fight not only for their land, but against Teutonic imperialism in 1242. But, in fact, it was commissioned by Stalin himself as a political film the amazingly foreshadows the operation Barbarosa in 1941. He specifically wanted it to alert and prepare the nation against a possible Nazi invasion. It’s directed and scored by two film geniuses: Sergei Eisenstein and Sergei Prokofiev. The final reward is the spectacular final battle where the Russians defeat the Teutonic invaders-the battle lasts almost half the film and is an amazing accomplishment given the time of production. You can well imagine how this was used as a tool after the war started to garner the elan used to defeat the enemy. Perhaps, given the date, it was a detriment by giving the Russians a feeling of invincibility...?
  12. If the freedom to speak has to include speaking“responsibly” and “productively” as defined by OTHERS, than that’s no freedom at all. Those are exactly the kind of terms they used in the Soviet Union to restrict speech. Same China and Cuba. Fionn, I don’t think you are really a fascist, but your instincts are. Why don’t you just stick to the game, and we can all get along.
  13. Wow, the Spanish civil war would be great, but you’d really need a strategic/political dimension for that one. I’d love it though. Vietnam would be great and more possible though.
  14. Stupid? You mean like Andrey Sakharov Reverendo?
  15. Well Steve, if you look back at the tread that started this, I made a joke (with smilie) about Fionn not answering a question and why I supposed he didn’t. He is the one that changed the tone of the exchange with some absurd comments about a conspiracy theory and the X-files because I made a joke about his not answering the question very well. He then became the most nauseating supercilious snot, in my opinion, as I responded in kind. You sate “Yes, I am aware that Fionn has more than his share of flame wars, but he never attacked you, so any justification you have for your posts goes out the window right there.” a)I think therein lies the problem with the exchange I had, his attitude that has got him into trouble numerous times, as you know. the latter part of you sentence in inaccurate if you follow the original exchange. You then state “The big problem you seem to have is that do not appear able to read and understand the agreement of this BBS. You seem to be hung up on some notion that you can post ANYTHING you like so long as you don't use words like "****head".” This is inaccurate as your charter says you can’t post “abuse” AND “profanity”. I was being ironical as you only selectively enforce the charter it would seem, as others are profane on a regular basis and there doesn’t seem to be a key as to what parts of it you really mean. Also I reject the notion that I was responding with abuse except for the comment I retracted and given the selective implementation of the rules it’s a moot point anyway. Also regarding free speech, if I don’t think I’m being abusive and the one in the position of power does and refuses the right of the other to express their views on the basis THEIR interpretation that’s not really free speech is it? I’m sure the Soviets though their dissidents were abusing the system and really hurting the people. Now you have the ability to act unilarterly-yes. But you can’t talk about fee speech if exercising tyrannical decisions. You say “I *DO* value free speech.” But this is not true, as YOU interpret my intentions and are selectively enforcing the rules. Also re: “As for your bleeding heart liberal free speech arguments, I have only one thing to say -> we pay the bills, and if you don't like our rules, you can take a hike.” and “Schrodi, the ONLY reason you are still here is that you generally stick to on topic discussions.” and I thought the UK lifted the irony embargo when PBS started getting British comedy! P.S. I love the game , I have and will continue to post about it if allowed. I would also like to add my great Uncle was imprisoned and killed for speaking out against Hitler in late 1940, at that point Hitler was actually very popular and about 99% of the community was against him. Like I said: either you believe in free speech or you don’t.
  16. Hmmm, all of the concerns that I’ve had are said to be addressed in the final version, but I think Samppa has a point. It might be hard to model, but I think it would also be fun if they modeled the wounded and you could rescue (or spontaneously “hero” now and again?) the wounded for a few moral points? I don’t know, to many bad films have me wanting a glorious rescue of comrades I suppose.
  17. Steve, this all started from Fionn responding to what you termed a “legitimate” question. Interestingly I’ve not had this problem with anyone else but I’ve noticed many others here and elsewhere have had similar problems with Fionn. Do I exaggerate? I’m more than willing to furnish you with examples, but I suspect you know that, and that’s why you didn’t ban me when Fionn, a valuable asset to you, more or less demanded you censor me because it bothers him. Despite the fact that I never used any profanity and even apologized for the one joke that could in any way be considered off colour. And Steve, as far as it being anti-democratic, you yourself invoke the democratic principles of your country: The US. But you refer to the 50 +1 needed to elect a president. Have they revoked the First Amendment? That was the democratic principle I was referring to: the right to free speech. Now, since private power often times means private tyranny you do have the right to ignore the spirit of your land. Given the context of this game I’m sure the irony wouldn’t be lost on you, reinforcing your urge not to ban me. I’m sure YOUR personal sentiments are against all forms of totalitarianism, as are mine. To wrap up the civil libertarian aspect to this I’ll also note the most of my posts (all of them almost, if you exclude the ones involving Fionn) are about the game, a game I’ve said I liked very much. I’ve NOT clogged up this system with a stream of invective as some would have you believe. There have only been a few directed at the source. I think the rest show my interest in civil interaction and a real interest in the game and in some tangential concerns of interest. Finally, either you believe in free speech or you don’t. Either you believe in it for your enemies or not at all. It’s precisely such cases that test the adherence of a society to such principles. We should not fail it personally or in the society at large. And Fionn, that’s total nonsense, and you know it. Steve has made is position clear all along, so you must know you are lying outright.
  18. Interesting post Supertanker, but, almost all houses in modern suburbs are built this flimsy way in NA, the majority of them being in areas as earthquake free as western Europe. And in fact, the area the I experienced this was just so. I think more often than not, it’s just plain luck that those houses are earthquake resistant in California so it’s a good idea to continue it there as it continues for other reasons everywhere else-cheepness being the driving force. Of course, the ranch style house it effective in this respect. This has more to do with the architectural fashion at the time of the boomer expansion in California-the ranch style of Frank Lloyd Wright.
  19. Ah, Finn posting again, I guess three days is “never again” where he’s from? Well he does seem to be an important service to people here so I guess it’s a good thing. Perhaps he won’t blow a gasket next time someone disagrees with him. Just for the record Finn, the only thing I said that was REMOTELY uncalled for was the *JOKE* I made about your ethnicity (and I denigrated my own in the process for balance). So, I take THAT, and that alone back, seeing how sensitive and ....you are. The rest is my opinion( expressed without any profanity) and it stands. And don’t pretend that there haven't been others who find you equally etc. etc. If you don’t like it, withdraw, discuss or just plain ignore it. Don’t clamor like a fascist infant for “consequences” and censorship. It’s undemocratic, unsportsmanlike and lacks any intellectual rigor whatever.
  20. What platform was CM developed on and why? Does anyone know?
  21. Yes, I noticed that too Thom. Also I think we have a case of Streichholzhäuser in the construction of the churches if not the houses. Surely the French can’t suffer from it so. As an aside, if you want to see a German slack jawed in amazment, bring him so a modern North American suburb to watch a house go up: “Mein Gott, eswird nie halten!!” In fact, I’ve see a Frenchman do this too.
  22. I can’t believe nobody mentioned Die Brücke (The Bridge). It’s one of the best ever made. It was made in 1959. If you haven't seen this and you like the war film genre, you owe it to yourself to go see this move. Also great, as mentioned by otheres, are Come and See and Das Boot. Great world war one moves are Paths of Glory and All Quite on the Western Front.
  23. Ha ha, Pionn is such a hypocrite. He screams to "bring me some proof". And yet, when I asked HIM to do the same once he just bobbed and weaved as he’s doing yet again. Well, I supposed every BUS has to have it’s pompous ass. Now don’t anyone go pointing out any of this to Pionn, he’ll try to frame what you’re saying as some sort of “conspiracy” theory, even when one wasn’t remotely alluded to-his way of avoiding the facts. Notice how reacts when anyone challenges this “Historical Manager”? Not very stable, I’d say. Don’t worry, I laughing about it and you should too. Laughing at our own little leprechaun.
  24. Darstand, I think the games you mention are the few exceptions in the sea of crap in the twitch game category as well. Also, in the high end line the development costs are such that it might be more of just not having a choice. i.e. Ma Bell a few years back you could say “hey x million customers can’t be wrong”
