  1. Better crew? I think not smile.gif I still can't believe they missed with the first two shots mad.gif

Just to elaborate, from my perspective the Stug appeared to still be hull down, but it did not say so when I targeted him. I thought 88 percent seemed a bit high, for while I was at fairly close range, them damn Stugs is little smile.gif

  2. CM makes another cameo in William Trotter's column this month. Actually, there are two:

    -----------

"The reason I refuse to get torqued-out about this state of affairs (the demise of large dedicated wargame companies) is that I cannot remember a better time for wargamers since the Golden Age of boardgames in the seventies. A quick finger count lists the following excellent new titles currently available: Combat Mission, Horse and Musket, TacOps 3.0..."

"Anyone who has seen Combat Mission or Smolensk '41 can testify: these games are both beautiful and playable."

    -----------

FWIW, you might wink.gif notice that he says "currently available."

  3. My wife's uncle was in the 309th Regiment, 78th Infantry Division. He was KIA in Germany on 3/10/45. In an effort to pull together as much info regarding his experiences in the ETO, and the circumstances surrounding his demise, I've been researching like mad. I've managed to find some interesting things, but I'm hamstrung by my inability to find a reasonably priced (ie, less than $100.00) copy of this book:

Lightning: The History of the 78th Infantry Division.

    Turner Publishing Company

    ISBN: 1563112752

I've exhasted all the channels that I know about, including several specialty book stores. I ordered it from Barnes & Noble, but they were unable to secure a copy.

If anyone has any ideas about how to finally get this book (actually a holy grail at this point smile.gif ) please let me know. Thanks!

  4. I'm curious about other opinions on this book. It's a compilation of articles from Command Magazine. There are several authors, so quality varies from piece to piece, but overall I really enjoyed it. There are a few technical articles that are very useful for CM purposes.

My only beef is that one of the coolest articles is an analysis of what would have happened had the Czechs fought in 1938. Unfortunately, it appears that the editor has hacked off the end of the article!! mad.gif

I've buzzed around the net a bit trying to find a way to get the complete article, but haven't found anything yet.

Anyway, despite this major goof, I'd recommend the book.

OUCH!!! 24 BUCKS!!!! Igot mine at a local used book store for 5 dollars!!! And its in great condition. Before you guys go throwing your money at the internet I would suggest checking your own local booksellers...I would hate to see the fine institution of bookstores go the way of the dodo...Mmmm dodo omelette... wink.gif

    <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Great except that until my local ma and pa store decides to drop its inventory on my desk, allow me to pick what I want, and deliver it to me at work (where I spend WAY too much of my time) I'm gonna use my handy little mouse to get me what I need. smile.gif

FWIW, the bookstore that it actually came from was some obscure little place in Carol, Montana. Some ma or pa got a piece of my action at least. I love those independent brick and mortar places too, but I don't have nearly enough time to spend in them.

Have a great vacation, Madmatt. If you think we're all jonesin' now, just wait until we have to go without CMHQ updates.

  6. I believe it is out of print. I ordered my copy from Barnes & Noble's Rare and Out of Print section. Still only cost me $24.00 for a quality used copy.

Feel free to click through my web site it you're going to use B&N. smile.gif

  7. I'm in the midst of Hastings' OVERLORD right now. I find his anecdotal stories a nice supplement to THE LONGEST DAY, and he provides wonderful portraits of several leaders on both sides. While I feel his breathless, effusive praise of the German soldier a bit silly, it's a nice change of pace from the typical pro-Allied prejudice in WWII writing. I think he also short changes the allies capacity to adapt their tactics, focusing instead on their failures early in the campaign. Hopefully, later in the book he will address the fact that they did successfully alter their tactics with favorable results.

Despite these minor criticisms, this is a great read! His journalistic writing style yields a smoothly flowing narrative, and I find the organization to be outstanding(always a tricky thing in a campaign with so many simultaneous events). Highly recommended!

  8. Came across this post at ign.pc today.

"Meanwhile, Steve had moved on to talk with Bill Levay about the WWII game, Squad Leader. Being a fan of the paper version of the game, Steve has long lamented the lack of a PC version of the game. And no, Beyond Squad Leader doesn't count. Don't get him started. The game is only four or five months old, so we didn't get a chance to look at any gameplay, we did talk concepts. The game is based on the X-COM turn-based model and will have a cinematic, Hollywood feel. A real effort is being made to make the game more approachable than the tabletop version and we're interested to see how Microprose strikes the balance between hardcore simulation and everyday fun."

  9. I just wanted to take a moment to thank BTS and those members of the CM community who are working hard to enrich the CM experience. Madmatt,Fionn, CoolColJ, Wild Bill's Raiders, the Beta testers, all of you working on web sites, mods, scenarios and the CMMC etc. Your work is GREATLY appreciated.

Unfortunately, the signal-noise ratio here has gotten out of hand. I think it's because at this late date, the veteran forum members have exhausted most of the possible topics. This drop off in measured, articulate discussion means that the ratio of quality discourse has dropped, giving more "air time" to bickering, misunderstanding and other such nonsense.

Please don't let the increasing acrimony deter you in your efforts to contribute to the CM community. You have all done terrific work, and there are MANY of us out here who appreciate it. We may not be making much noise, but we are out here just the same.

    Thanks.

  10. Eye candy? Bahh!!!!! Personally I would be playing and loving this game if it used stick figures and cubes for the soldiers and AFV's. But I understand that BTS needs to make a splash because 99% of the reviewers (and a large percentage of gamers)regularly judge a book by its cover. While I feel that the existing graphics are MORE than sufficient, I will patiently (?) wait while they tweak away.

  11. Part Two of the WWII In Color series is on tonight, 9:00PM EST. I presume part three will be on Thursday smile.gif

Last nights edition was ok. The narrative is necessarily limited by what they have footage of, but there are some nice diary excerpts. There was some sensational Eastern Front footage near the end that leaves me optomistic about the rest of the series.

FWIW, they are selling the three-part series for like $29.00 (U.S.).

  12. Thanks for the suggestion. That will be helpful, but I'm also looking for stuff on the Western Front. Actually, MacDonald's book is one of the reasons that I'm interested in learning some more. I understand that he wrote a book called "The Last Offensive" while he was U.S. Army Historian, but it's out of print. I'm going to comb the online sellers for a copy now. Still taking suggestions, though. smile.gif

  13. Could one of you wise souls please recommend a book which covers the later stages of the war in Europe(ie, post-Bulge including Varsity, the Rhine battles, etc)? Overlord, Market Garden and the Bulge get all the ink, but there was some very intersting stuff happening in 1945 that I'd like to learn more about.

    Thanks very much.
