1. D'oh!Never mind,I've just figured it out.My problem was that I was too stupid to follow directions properly.
2. Okay,I know I'm making this harder than it should be. In my current turn,I play the movie from the last turn(my opponent sent it using 1.00,he had no choice since his turn was a movie view only,no orders phase for him, then he upgraded in so he would be ready for my turn, sent under 1.01),then I have an orders phase, then I send my turn.I still can't make this work-I've tried saving immediately after viewing the movie(i.e.,before giving any orders),then loading under 1.01,and I've tried saving after giving orders(but before hitting 'go',of course),then reloading under 1.01,but no dice. It seems the problem is I'm not really 'saving' the game in the orders phase-I'm using the 'save' button on the buttom menu, and the program asks for a name to attach to the save file, but when I try to reload,I am unable to locate the save file-if I try saving it to a file name which already exists,it doesn't overwrite it.So I am apaprently doing something wrong, but I have no idea what. This is really driving me nuts, any clues? Mike
3. Stupid question, but it's driving me batty. My opponent upgraded to 1.01 after sending me a movie turn(i.e.,he only could watch the movie, then send, now I watch movie,do orders phase, and return)-as I understand it,I need to save the game after watching the movie in 1.00,then upgrade, load game, and give orders, etc.Problem is,when I do that I am unable to load the saved game, and I am given the 'your opponent is using a different version than you etc' error.Any idea what I am doing wrong?
4. "The satanic Masons and CIA establish your Party line, and you all just mindlessly repeat this nonsense." Sorry to butt in with a guffaw, but this is too rich. Anyway, this person is certainly one to speak of 'party lines'. And Norse wrote: 'WHO CARES if someone thinks communism works better than democracy or not, eh? ' True, but that sword cuts both ways.I don't recall anyone slamming the Russian war effort before EB came around, and when he slams the Western war effort, everyone is supposed to turn the other cheek like gentlemen?I seriously doubt EB would reciprocate. If he can't take the rebuttals to his biased comments, too bad.
5. 'Also, it has always been my understanding that the Allies sought to minimize their own casualties while allowing the Soviets to do most of the fighting. ' There is no doubt that the Western Allies sought to minimize their own casualities, and it's equally obvious that the Soviets had very little concern for casualties. What that proves other than Stalin had little value for Russian lives,I have no idea. I have to admit,it's incredible to watch someone try to defend Stalin's policies-I think EB may be somehow pulling people's leg here.If he's not,he is a seriously deluded individual.
6. 'When playing the Allied side, I find myself having to force myself to think first "ok, I am Stalin now--kill Germans"' Don't you mean,'I am Stalin now--kill Russians'? But ignoring your loaded rhetoric,I would agree that it would be a nice feature to let the computer play as an Allied nation, whether Italy,Russia,Britain, whatever.
7. Love to,but again I can't access the site.Hope someone else can possibly host the movie on their site. Mike
8. Rune- I'm not using anything special, but I *do* use Black Ice(I don't think my opponent is using a firewall).I have a cable connect, and he is using DSL.Can anyone confirm that this happens when both players are using the same platform?I'm sure it does, but we are playing PC vs Mac. I wondered about the firewall,so I shut it down, and we still got the same result. And I've used the firewall with all the other tcp games that went fine,so it would seem strange if that's the problem. Mike
9. We'll see if I can get this one out before this is padlocked. The Totenkopf was indeed more involved with the death camps than the other Waffen SS divisions, but one thing to keep in mind is that these units, small in number as they were, were quite incestuous. For instance,at least nine men who were with SSTK from the first two years of the war later became commanders of other SS divisions.Three of those eventualy became SS Corps commanders. The criminal record of *every* Waffen SS division, with the exception of the Wiking, mostly composed of foreign nationals, was abysmal when compared to any other regular army unit of just about any nationality. And Kingfish-if you'll recall,I declared Carentan an open city, whereupon you proceeded to level it to the ground.I see the propaganda is in full swing. Mike
10. Too true,my email buddy-now where's your next turn? As for 'these things need to be discussed'-my question is,what on earth does this topic have to do with CM? I would advise anyone who thinks the Waffen SS has been given a bad break by history to read 'Soldiers of Destruction',a balanced view that cuts through the myth.It only covers the Totenkopf division, however. Mike
11. Jason, I know you just threw this out as an aside, but I think that would be true of just about *any* higher commander.I'm sure the staffs of,say,Patton or Manstein would similarly roll their eyes if they would try to take charge tactically-it was not their job. It reminds me of Stonewall Jackson's nice operational Shenadoah campaign, which contrasts starkly with his much overrated tactical ability.
12. It's a QB,Rune.I could send the file, but I only know my password(though I could prolly get my opponent to send you his). Mike
13. Rune- My opponent and I would still like to play this one out,so I don't want to ruin the FOW if I don't have to.I think we'll try it again via tcp/ip,and if that fails again,we'll try finishing via email. What's odd is that a couple of turns prior to where we are now we were getting the same problem, but after my opponent removed some mods(and I don't know if that had any affect or not)we were able to continue. But after playing one turn,we're back to the same thing, and this time nothing either of us did could get it to work. Just odd that this is the only scenario where we've had a problem.Maybe it *is* a corrupted file,I don't know. I'll post after we've tried it again. Mike
14. I just experienced this problem with my opponent,Vetch. He is using a Mac,I'm using a Celeron 450,256 megs SDRam.We had played two games last week with no problems, but we had one DYO this morning where we kept losing connection as soon as the game was ready to go to the replay. We finally had to quit that one(still have the save),and started another one, where we experienced no problem. Very strange-but I can vouch, this does happen, for seemingly no reason. Mike [This message has been edited by Mike Oberly (edited 03-04-2001).]
15. Cleavis- As opposed to,say, the summer of '41,when the Germans outnumbered the Russians in *modern* tanks? The Russians didn't roll over the Germans in '43-'45 due to 10-1 odds-they rolled over them due to largely equivalent equipment, and good doctrine. There are many good books on Eastern front operations and tactics in WW2-you should check them out.I look forward very much to playing as the Russians in CM2.
16. How about this:I'll read what I like here, and comment on what I wish to comment on.I'm not telling you what or what not to post, after all. I agree to a certain extent about your problems with HPS on the graphics of some of their games, but tell me this:how is their response on the graphics any different than BTS response to those who want flashier graphics to CM?HPS,like BTS,is trying to keep system requirements realistic for the majority of their customers.I don't blame either company for that. Mike
17. Well, three that spring to mind for me are HPS,Shrapnel, and SSG.I'm sure there are many others, but those are ones with whom I have had dealings in the past on a variety of matters, and have had nothing but good experiences.I agree that BTS is responsive, etc, but it is quite tiresome to read over and again here that they are unique, and that all other gaming companies are the devil. Mike
18. Should be able to hit it from http://www.matrixgames.com A grigsby design, which means it will be cinematic and detailed, but perhaps too detailed for its own good.Hoping for the best. Mike
19. You didn't specify 'computer games'(though I'm sure that's what you meant! ,so I would recommend GMT's Barbarossa games(along with Typhoon!,which uses the same system),unless you're completely disinterested in (rather large) board wargames.IMO,they are the best games ever made on the subject-extremely elegant designs. Oh,and send an email to Roger Keating of SSG urging him to produce the sequel to 'The Ardennes Offensive',which was to be on the Korsun Pocket. That is one of the great computer operational level systems ever devised. Mike
20. My votes would go to tss and Herr Hofbauer(my apologies if I mispelled the name).I still wade through enormous amounts of tripe posted here to read always worthwhile posts by them, among others, natch. Mike
21. Besides some of the suggestions others have mentioned,I'd really like to see a building damage model that is less punishing to the men inside the buildings. As of now,it's a great tactic to level buildings, even if there are no enemies spotted in them, because the peanlties are so harsh to the inhabitants once they're rubbled. This was *not* a viable tactic in real life, mainly because it wasn't this effective. I would hope that with a more detailed building model in CM2 that this will be toned down a lot. Mike
22. Charles- Never mind.I think I've got it licked.Thanks,Charles. [This message has been edited by Mike Oberly (edited 12-15-2000).]
23.
quote:
I'm just still wondering how the HQ squad got the Tiger?

They used a 'sticky bomb'.
24. I would second Michael Wittmann & the Tiger Commanders of the Leibstandarte,it's a great and detailed book, but it's not cheap.Be prepared to pay $80-$100 for it.I also second Lawyer's opinion on Simpson's Tiger Ace-only approach that one after you've had a few stiff drinks. Mike
