1.
quote:
2. I think it is morally more correct to disobey laws one does not agree with than it is to be cowed by them.

You mean this to support a principle. But this can be interpreted to be anarchist. Again I point to the fellow of singapore who will pirate CM because he will not pay the full cost. You don't believe he is morally correct do you? He is not cowed by the copyright laws. Phoenix, You are right we will never agree. You think this law is unreasonable. I think it is unreasonable to want swastikas in a wargame where there should not be them. These VL flags are arbitrary parts of the game. No real commander could see such a thing. I think to be realistic it is better to use some other symbol. A unit flag or symbol would be better. Why not just have the balkankreuz for germans, the star for the amis and the circle thing (cockade?) for the others. Every nation has one. I would like many symbols to represent many units, but this may hurt the fog of war. If BTS had not put in the flags then this would never be an issue. Would you argue to put the national flags in? Do you really think they are needed? Major, I think it is the hindus that use the swastika. It is supposed to bring luck. The Finns also used this swastika but it is different it is not angled liked the NS one. Now they don't use it anymore. In the US is there not this problem with the flag of the confederates?
 2. Why is it so necessary that swastikas be in this game? Do you really think German soldiers held up a NS flag when they captured an important place? This is a game marker we are talking about. It is not a real flag. What value is there in using this flag?
quote:
Others may want to see the historically accurate insignia. You don't want it, you don't download it.

I won't. But I still do not understand this need to have this little bitmap. I already showed this flag is wrong. Wolfenstein 3D was full of these symbols. Did that make it a better game?
quote:
And really, how is it breaking the law? Is it against the law for a private citizen in Germany to download a picture of a swastika?? Is it illegal for them to change a file on their computer? Will the police arrive at the house and confiscate the computer should some "informant" let them know what is going on? Please.

Chnaging a file is not illegal. Importing NS symbols using the internet is. Do you understand? The chance people will be caught is low. The chance pirates will be caught in Singapore is also low. Is that OK too?
 3. This thread bothers me. I do not understand how one bitmap picture in a game can so important. Only Germans must worry about this symbol. What interest is it of others that Germans be able to download this image? I can draw my own if I want it. I think this emphasis on this picture is wrong. Germany has their laws and that is that. People here have made a great argument because of people in countries where piracy is OK want to pirate CM. Why then this desire to go around German law? Why encourage Germans to break the law? I personally do not need to see swastikas to feel I am playing a realistic game. CM is a game. It is not an historical artifact. For people who want super-realism I suggest to look into the real German flag in WWII. Weimer Germany never had an official flag and NS Germany never made this NS flag official. The actual real German flag was still the black red and white bars of the old reich.
 4. I am not trying to blame an individual for that which I see happening here. I do feel justified becuase BTS posted that they understand where I am coming from on this. I think the level of discussion was higher before the demo and during the first weeks after the demo. I think before that there were only a few people "qualified" to answer questions about the game and that I think helped very much to control the flames. I think the demo split the CM gamers into groups. There is the group that thinks CM is perfect. There is the group that see flaws in CM but also recognize that it is an important step forward and there is the group that was disappointed by the demo for whatever reason. The problem I think comes from the first group when they respond to someone from the other two groups. I'm thinking of the "if you don't like it go play SP or CC" kind of answer. Another pattern is the dismisal of questions basedon the demo. A standard answer seems to be "it's been fixed." I understand why testers might answer this way, but I don't think it is very helpful. I might never have posted, but Dale's post seemed to me to be hitting the nail on the head. I have not read every thread. I have read those that have titles that look interesting. I also read the locked threads . Maybe that is why my view of the board is as it is. For example I just read the thread about the "Dutch" bigoraphy of Reagan. The only reason I read it was because it is locked. So I want to see what happened.
 5.
quote:
was CLEARLY and OBVIOUSLY in jest. Don't go trying to misrepresent me as it is obvious to anyone that I was making a joke.

How easy it is to misunderstand what the other writes. Two posts meant to be "in jest" and it grew to be a whole thread about misunderstanding. This happens over and over. This medium is often very poor for communicating humor. Sorry, Foobar. I take back my statement about mean-spirited, but it was not obvious to me that it was in jest.
 6. What a sad thread that will now get closed up by BTS because it went sour. I see nothing offensive in the Schrodi post. I would translate it a little differnetly than Freyland has. "on your window sill stands a plastic Christmas tree and in your closet stands a naked white woman." and then the part ignored by everyone "happy celebration." I do not see how this can interpreted as an insult or any connection to anybodys wife. I wouldn't mind having a naked white woman in my closet for the holidays. Why are people so quick to take offense when none is meant? This idea of a moral obligation to defend other posters seems strange to me. I think people will do this if they feel it is the correct thing to do. I do not think anyone is obligated to do this especially when the insult is imagined. And where in the rules for this board is posting in German verboten?
quote:
it is rather rude to post in German on this board, *especially* when Germans have so much to be humble about.

This statement is mean-spirited. Germans have much to be humble about, and humble we are. Americans have also much to be humble about but they are not. No nation is without guilt and yet no language is wrong.
 7. Correction for Fionn. First post. Merely agreeing with what Dale H said while pointing out that BTS is far more patient with those who have questions than many of the regular posters here. There is a definite, how do you say "Grundeinstellung", base view (?) of the board that is not welcoming to critical comments. It is like these people enjoy the game less when someone criticizes it.
 8.
quote:
Maybe this is not the best forum for these kind of questions because of the 'emperor has no clothes' type of response this kind of questioning often elicits here.

Amen. Tho it must be emphasized that this is almost exclusively from the frothing sycophants and not BTS.
