  1. I'm running on my brand new (got it a week ago) SONY GRX570 VIAO laptop... 1.6 GHZ, 16" 1600x1200 screen, 32 meg radeon 7500 video... nice little toy:-D (also the reason I'm suddenly back, because I Can finally play CM again:-D) -Scott
  2. Berli - its definately cool to be back... looks like I got back just in time too:-D hopefully it won't be quite the same "the release will happen any day now" for 6 months like with CMBO (don't get me wrong, it was seriously worth it:-P)... You know... I seem to remember I left just as the first peng challenge thread set its first record for length.... scary.. that was a long time ago... oh well... back to the joys of J2ME software developing... fun fun, but I'll be lurking around. Nice to see you all again. -Scott
  3. Wow... it has been forever since I last posted on here... I went off to college with a non 3d- capable laptop, and between school and no capable computer, CM kinda fell off my list of things I could do. I just got a new computer though (new sony GRX laptop... sick machine) and coincidentally I found my CM cd the same day... So here I am, going through a sudden CM revival... its great... I'd definately forgotten how masterful this game is:-D CM2 looks great, and its nice to see a few familiar names on here. Its good to be back, and nice to have CM again!:-D -Scott
  4. Hey Guys- just got back from playing aroung with my friends copy of the new game Black and White (its a strat/rts where you play a god... interesting game, haven't gotten into it) what did blow my mind however is the graphics... just like CM (extreme detail, seemless transition from a god like overhead view to right in with your villagers reading their faces) only taken up several notches. Its funny, looked at these amazing graphics, and my first thought was excitement because that's where CM II is probably headed... unfortunatley I'm too brain-dead at the moment (gotta love research papers) to post any links, gut go to any game site and look up "Black and white" for screenshots... and then imagine some panzers behind those hills -Scott (returning from the CM grave to make a brief appearance)
  5. I've got A T-bird 750 on a Gigabyte bored... CM works fantastic (go with AMD, better performace for less money, hands down) -Scott

  8. 1.Doing something productive right now is better than figuring out the best plan tomorrow. 2.Friendly fire - isn't. 3.Recoilless rifles - aren't. 4.Suppressive fires - won't. 5.You are not Superman; Marines and fighter pilots take note. 6.If it's stupid but it works, it isn't stupid. 7.Try to look unimportant; the enemy may be low on ammo and not want to waste a bullet on you. 8.If at first you don't succeed, call in an air strike. 9.If you are forward of your position, your artillery will fall short. 10.Never share a foxhole with anyone braver than yourself. 11.Never go to bed with anyone crazier than yourself. 12.Never forget that your weapon was made by the lowest bidder. 13.If your attack is going really well, it's an ambush. 14.The enemy diversion you're ignoring is their main attack. 15.The enemy invariably attacks on two occasions: a) when they're ready. when you're not. 16.No OPLAN ever survives initial contact. 17.There is no such thing as a perfect plan. 18.Five second fuzes always burn three seconds. 19.There is no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole. 20.A retreating enemy is probably just falling back and regrouping. 21.The important things are always simple; the simple things are always hard. 22.The easy way is always mined. 23.Teamwork is essential; it gives the enemy other people to shoot at. 24.Don't look conspicuous; it draws fire. For this reason, it is not at all uncommon for aircraft carriers to be known as bomb magnets. 25.Never draw fire; it irritates everyone around you. 26.If you are short of everything but the enemy, you are in the combat zone. 27.When you have secured the area, make sure the enemy knows it too. 28.Incoming fire has the right of way. 29.No combat ready unit has ever passed inspection. 30.No inspection ready unit has ever passed combat. 31.If the enemy is within range, so are you. 32.The only thing more accurate than incoming enemy fire is incoming friendly fire. 33.Things which must be shipped together as a set, aren't. 34.Things that must work together, can't be carried to the field that way. 35.Radios will fail as soon as you need fire support. 36.Radar tends to fail at night and in bad weather, and especially during both.) 37.Anything you do can get you killed, including nothing. 38.Make it too tough for the enemy to get in, and you won't be able to get out. 39.Tracers work both ways. 40.If you take more than your fair share of objectives, you will get more than your fair share of objectives to take. 41.When both sides are convinced they're about to lose, they're both right. 42.Professional soldiers are predictable; the world is full of dangerous amateurs. 43.Military Intelligence is a contradiction. 44.Fortify your front; you'll get your rear shot up. 45.Weather is not neutral. 46.If you can't remember, the Claymore is pointed towards you. 47.Air defense motto: shoot 'em down; sort 'em out on the ground. 48.Flies high, it dies; low and slow, it'll go. 49.The Cavalry doesn't always come to the rescue. 50.Napalm is an area support weapon. 51.Mines are equal opportunity weapons. 52.B-52s are the ultimate close support weapon. 53.Sniper's motto: reach out and touch someone. 54.Killing for peace is like screwing for virginity. 55.The one item you need is always in short supply. 56.Interchangeable parts aren't. 57.It's not the one with your name on it; it's the one addressed "to whom it may concern" you've got to think about. 58.When in doubt, empty your magazine. 59.The side with the simplest uniforms wins. 60.Combat will occur on the ground between two adjoining maps. 61.If the Platoon Sergeant can see you, so can the enemy. 62.Never stand when you can sit, never sit when you can lie down, never stay awake when you can sleep. 63.The most dangerous thing in the world is a Second Lieutenant with a map and a compass. 64.Exceptions prove the rule, and destroy the battle plan. 65.Everything always works in your HQ, everything always fails in the Colonel's HQ. 66.The enemy never watches until you make a mistake. 67.One enemy soldier is never enough, but two is entirely too many. 68.A clean (and dry) set of BDU's is a magnet for mud and rain. 69.The worse the weather, the more you are required to be out in it. 70.Whenever you have plenty of ammo, you never miss. 9. I highly suggest you gentleman do a search on the topic. I seem to remember 2 or 3 100+ post threads on this exact topic. IIRC the consensus was that castrating mortar units firepower wise after they ran out of ammo was to prevent gamey behavior. Steve justified this in depth (and very well I might add), you'll have to search for details though. -EridanMan
  10. Passworded?!?! I've downloaded and installed -EridanMan
  11. People, cm_public.exe IS THE TCPIP PATCH! -EridanMan
  12. Sharp Eye... We must be a pain in the ass THANKS STEVE AND CHARLES!!! Anyone up for a game? -Scott [This message has been edited by Eridani (edited 11-28-2000).]
  13. Hey Good enough news that I just may decide to come back to the CM world for a little while (on that note, hi everyone, I am still alive, just caught in the deathly grips of college... and loving every minute of it) Oh, and Steve - who won the game? I look forward to butchering a few lucky few of you again after TCP/IP comes out who wants some -EridanMan [This message has been edited by Eridani (edited 11-03-2000).] [This message has been edited by Eridani (edited 11-03-2000).]
  14. I just upgraded my AMD k6 350 classic to an Athlon Thunderbird 750mhz and 7200rpm harddrive (still using my TNT2 video card though). The result? he he he those new Athlons are Fast oh yeah, my new 19" monitor doesn't hurt. I now play combat mission at 1280x1024x32 (Before the upgrade my computer choked at 800x600x16) -EridanMan
  15. I must say the funniest thing I ever saw, I was playing an op... I ordered one of my jeeps to run down a road at high speed for recon. Well, unfortunately, sed road was mined. The poor little jeep plowed full speed into a mine field and exploded with a catastrophic explosion, then CONTINUED down the road, setting off 3-4 MORE minefields, including 2 more catastrophic explosions... needless to say I'm sure there wasn't much left of the jeep when it stopped rolling... nope, the poor fool never got out. But he gave me good recon, he found 4 of the enemy minefields all by himself lol -EridanMan
  16. put a couple numbers on the board- I'm 18 (the gold demo shipped on my 18th b-day). My little bro (also obsessed but doesn't check the board) is 14. -Scott
  17. I used to think the 2" was the most worthless unit in the game... I have found them to be a very limited nich weapon... If I group of all of the mortars in a company plus buy two extra's (at 9pts a piece its really cheap), I get a platoon of 5 mortars, lead by my company hq. now this little platoon I've found to be an excellent "clear 1 forest free" card, basically I usually can move it into position, and firing all mortars together, clear one small forest for no losses to myself... I've used them successfully MANY times in this regard. I do also have to question the logic of having them slow however... there's no way that a 2" mortar tube w/out optics and stand is at all heavier than a zook or schreck... I think that they're speed should be increased to at least that of a piat/schreck, and probably up to a full run... If I'm mistaken I'd love to know why... I'll fully admit I'm no grognard and I only have a basic understanding of what I am talking about. I also might ad, I could see raising their cost a few points if you do give them run ability because that would make them more effective troops oh well enough rambling on my part- -EridanMan
  18. K-tiger Not true. do a search on the M2 for more details, but Charles has posted detailed penetration diagrams showing that the M2 can penetrate most german halftracks out to I think 500 meters from the front, and out to almost 1000 from the sides. He said the thing you have to remember is not only does each shot have 18mm of pentration capability (at 150 yards iirc) and it drops to like 12 at 500, (note, these figures are being pulled out of the back of my head, you really need to search for the exact numbers), you are also talking about spraying hundreds of these shots per turn, so the chance of penetration becomes even greater still. I have seen the Ma Deuce take out a Stug III at CLOSE range (<50 meters), knock out hetzers from flank shots at 100-150 meters, and destroy half-tracks from the other side of the map. the mg42 does not have the kenetic energy per shot to have the same penetration capabilities as the Ma Deuce. -EridanMan
  19. Be careful with your commands. by having your tanks fast move you greatly restrict their ability to react. and don't be afriad to give better orders than just "run forward around this bend", I'll tell you, I OFTEN tell my tanks to move around the bend of a building and then immidiately reverse back if I don't have recon as to what is around that corner. Its just simply smart playing (and often times I'll bet you what the computer is doing in those situations the tac-ai doesn't cut in). I think the veterans biggest point here is that we've played (Fionn by far having the most experience as a beta tester) countless times, from all different sides, and we haven't seen the problems you encountered, or when we have they have been easily explainable... And sometimes it sux and ur men don't do what you want them too... but hey, welcome to war. -EridanMan
  20. Simple Pause for 40 seconds, move forward, and then next order give a reverse out. OR hunt forward and reverse out.. I'm willing to bet a big part of the problem is your ordering your tanks to fast instead of move or hunt, therefore they aren't looking around themselves all that much and don't notice or react in time to enemy armor. I do have to say, the AI does not cheat, and the computer tac ai is the same one that we get. BTS has made this clear, and it makes so sense for them to do otherwise. I personally have no problems of this kind... my men react just as intellegently as the Computers, and I've been playing since the beta demo was released a little less than a year ago. try slowing down and giving your men time to react, you might like your results better. I assure you, you are the cause of the great majority of the error you blame on your men. -EridanMan
  21. Don't tell me you've never had ur men turn around and run away when faced with something big that could make them very unhappy... It happens to me ALL the time. What you are seeing is simply the tacAI of the computer's troops kicking in, pissing in their pants, and going the other way. This is the same TacAI that will kick in with your men too. Trust me, I've seen it countless times, its definately not cheating. do a search for tacAI for more information. -EridanMan
  22. yes, the one CD holds both versions of the game -EridanMan
  23. Welcome to what has become probably the most requested feature (to many of us it is more important that tcp/ip play). The answer is not yet, but hopefully in a patch later -EridanMan
  24. Hey Peiper- glad to see your so excited, but as a matter of ettiquite, all caps is considered screaming and thus rather rude. I understand you probably don't know this so we won't lynch you this time ( ) but I just though I would let you know. I run on an AMD k6 350 with a viper v770 video card (tnt2). This will be upgraded very soon to an Athlon 700 however, as my current machine just doesn't have the horsepower to play CM smoothly. -EridanMan
