  1. Bens right. I remember seeing screen shots of it and it was just wireframe buildings, etc. Doesnt sound real glamorous, but it would be great for printing out your overhead map, which is what I'm looking for a good way to do....
  2. I'm playing an ironman CM scenario and would like to put together an overhead map for printing out and "grease penciling". I remember some time ago someone came out with an ultra-low-res terrain that looked like the old greenscreen type wireframe views but I can't find it. Anyone know where it might currently be? Theres a topic from ages ago but the web page referenced is no more. Thoughts? TIA, Adam Arabian [ 06-04-2001: Message edited by: A Arabian ]
  3. I would definitely prefer that it be in the game, but I presume you guys know that a database was put together as an excel document with screenshots of the units, costs, and all the raw data (including some additional info such as how common it was, etc) by someone as a third party DB. I don't recall the URL offhand (anyone?) but I've found it invaluable. As far as penetration charts, those were originally intended to be shipped on the CD, but apparently it would have been a multi-CD set of its own prevented it from happening.
  4. So, 007 is #2? Well, the real question is.... "Who does number two work for!?" A. Arabian Boy. This thread is doing wonders for my sense of maturity... [ 04-12-2001: Message edited by: A Arabian ]
  5. Aww, you guys are making it too easy... <---- Actually I have a theory that all of us that were pre-ultimate bulletain board system were listed as having signed on on the first date, so were just numbered alphabetically. If you look, I actually have a lower number than BTS itself... Oh, and if you want to know your number without posting, just do a search for your previous posts - it'll show up there.
  6. Dorsch and Heidman, You guys are both right on. We don't know anything about this game. Hell - it could be GOOD for bts: 1. Gives them incentive to keep moving forward, and 2. They may get free advertising if GI Combat.. sucks when the game mags say "well, this one is rotten, but if you want something thats better, check out CM...". There are literally maybe 30 posts on their BBS total, and half are part of the flame war. Its true - anyone came in here and did the same they would get eaten alive.
  7. Heres an interesting note - logins from yahoo.com have been banned from their BBS...
  8. One of the most interesting things I saw on their BBS was that one of their programmers was "david miller", the genius in charge of CC IV. I can hope its a good game, but I'm doubtful. Its pedigree just doesnt impress me. A. Arabian
  9. Its unlikely the USE of DU will be banned worldwide (per Kip's statement). Its just too useful of a weapon. Even nations that can afford to be more pacifistic (r.e. land mine ban) undoubtedly recognize the need for a shell that can effectively penetrate armor. What might happen is that the PRODUCTION of NEW DU will be banned - which is probably just fine with the majority of the nations - the US hasn't manufactured new DU stocks since the late '70s. New munitions (in the US) have been from old DU stocks built up from 1955 (approx) to 1979 (I think thats when it ended). What I've been wondering though is, since this is the case, why would there be a noticeable degredation in DU shell performance over time? And if there were, why wouldn't that result in a desire to continue production of new DU stocks?
  10. Whew. Thank goodness I'm not the only one to remember that, Chupacabra. Could still be completely wrong, though...
  11. Doug's right. This one, although not quite as notorious as showing dead soldiers and picking up enemy weapons, came up a number of times "back in the day". The discussions on it (as I recall) were excellent, and I'd like to add one more point to the conclusions that Doug listed: 4. The effectiveness of sandbags in preventing armor penetration, regardless of the ammo type, was next to nil, and was possibly actually counterproductive in certain cases. Its effectiveness (roughly quoting BTS) was "in (artifically) inflating the crew morale". So basically, it really wouldn't have different effects with different ammo, it pretty much had no effect with any ammo (this due to the relative strength of the sandbags vs. armor penetration properties). I seem to recall that in certain cases (shaped charges?) it actually made the penetration of the weapon BETTER as it provided a standoff distance such taht the charge would have superior penetration. But a search would give you better information than my feeble memory . Suffice it to say this one was done to death, and although a mod would be cool, don't expect it to show up anytime soon in CM....
  12. Mensch - maybe you should just open a Tim Hortons franchise in Hannover
  13. Well, if we're opening up this discussion to beyond WWII, you can't neglect what was unquestionably the greatest war film of our time... Stripes Adam Arabian --- Sgt. Hulka is our big toe.... [This message has been edited by A Arabian (edited 01-09-2001).]
  14. Well, according to my DSL service, I suck. Well, not those words in particular, but thats the idea. They don't give out routable IPs - they cheat and do what Karch said in his first post. Ahh well. Not the end of the world I suppose, but it is annoying. Thank all.
  15. I guess I should amend my previous statement - although I think most meeting engagements would begin with skirmish lines, youre right... sneak attacks and ambushes are fair game, whereas crappy first turns are just plain hokey.
  16. Mr. Clark: Oh, you have no idea how much I agree with you. I got my a$$ handed to me on a platter on that one . We played it out, and I did stupid things anyway, but I thought it wasnt a very well designed scenario. Personally what I think would be a better way of setting up scenarios is to have a couple of scout teams locked into place a bit forward on the map, as you would generally advance with scouts. You would then engage opfor as a scout skirmish and have a better idea as to what is going on - this I think would be more typical of a meeting engagement or advance on defended position. This instead of suddenly seeing a tank down the street that you would have known perfectly well was there. This is a scenario design issue, and basicailly if my opponent and I don't like the scenario, we bail on it and start a new one. And go back to CMHQ and give it 1 star.
  17. Bump. I'd still like an answer to this if possible....
  18. Incidentally, although it is a beta patch, its certainly solid for non-TCPIP play, and pretty solid for TCPIP (some people have had problems, most not, I'd say). So basically theres no reason NOT to upgrade to 1.24b.
  19. I've seen those - what I remember though was that they were planning (and probably had done) a complete set of them for all possible vehicle combinations (which explains why it was a huge amount of data). For some reason it wasn't possible to generate them online based on vehicle data - they had to be a bunch of seperate pre-generated images. I would love to get my hands on the complete set though.
  20. I did a quick search and all I could find was "where are they" questions and no responses.... I remember the original plan was to put them on the CD but they turned out to be too big. I thought the next idea was to make them available for DL from BTS, but that never took - any reason why? Any chance we could still get them?
  21. Gremlin - yeah, forgot that it was macro based and wouldn't be accessible with the viewer. I thought the data would still be available, though the nifty unit screen might not. I dropped a line to the guy who put it together asking if he would be offended were I to try to make something a bit more accessible for the non-excel owning folks. I know BTS had grand plans for putting a lot more on the CD - most notably they were going to provide the penetration diagrams which would have been really cool, but they didn't have room. I completely agree though that having that info on the CD would have been great (and in the force slection window would have been even better). I think putting it in the manual would have turned it into a book in and of itself, which wouldn't have been practical. [This message has been edited by A Arabian (edited 01-02-2001).]
  22. FYI, don't know if you are aware this is available, but my solution is to alt-tab into excel and use the unit database: http://w1.312.telia.com/~u31213280/index.htm (under the "addons" button) Incidentally, Madmatt - Any reason you don't have a link to this file at CMHQ? I have a bear of a time trying to find it every time I look for the URL. [This message has been edited by A Arabian (edited 01-02-2001).]
  23. Hate to differ with ya shatter, but most of TownsendVol's questions have been pretty reasonable. I mean, sure he should buy it (he liked the demo, we told him to, yadda yadda...) but hey - its 45 bucks, and I can't blame the guy for being uncertain. Note that last night was the first time he had had a chance to play the demo battle through. Its his perogative to nail down as much as possible before handing out his credit card number (I, on the other hand, handed out my credit card number to these guys months before the demo was released, if I recall correctly ) Anyway, KwazyDog is right - it is still a "beta", and I know some people have had some problems, but I played PC vs. Mac, one on DSL and one on el cheapo dialup, and had zero problems. Townsend, buy the game. Its basically the only thing I've played for the past 6 months. Well, all right, in the dark times I slip in a couple of games of unreal tournament, but don't tell... OT: Shatter - you in college up in Keller? What school? [This message has been edited by A Arabian (edited 12-31-2000).]
  24. My .02... 1. Uh, yeah. What they said. 2. Uh, also waht they said (I've had no problems that are the fault of the game - Mostly a bad internet connection on my opponents end. But the game autosaves before each build, so you won't lose an entire evenings worth of gaming or anything - just a couple of minutes). 3. I've been reading this forum since probably middle of 1999 and this has come up a bunch of times. Basically the BTS response is "Yeah, that would be really cool, but at this point it would be such a major rewrite that its not gonna happen soon". Basically the soonest it will come out will be in CMII (uh, one more pont to help you out reading the forum - there is CM2, which is the eastern front game - that will be a minor rewrite of the engine to improve certain things necessary for eastern front tactics such as improved building fighting, etc. The other is CMII, which is version 2 of the game enging - this will be a MAJOR rewrite - I think have those two right - they could be reversed, but you get the idea ). Anyway, hence the soonest will be CMII but I wouldn't hold my breath even for that. Depends on how they place their priorities. Hope that helps. Incidentally, its a GREAT game - I don't play many computer games anymore, but this one has been really satisfying. Playing against real human being opponents is a hell of a lot more fun than playing vs. the computer.... if only for the trash talk element (ref Peng thread) [This message has been edited by A Arabian (edited 12-31-2000).]
  25. Does anyone else find it disturbing though that CM was in the "Strategy" category against 4 RTSs? Twitch....Twitch.... See, I can click faster than you! That means I win! Adam "It ain't real time, and it aint Strategy" Arabian --- Vote soon, vote often....
